11.01.2022 All you need to know about growing mint this season Mint prefers partial shade and grows best in a spot with moist but well-drained soil. This fast-growing herb spreads primarily by runners growing underground, so if you dont want it to spread and take over the garden, grow it in a pot. ... To get the best out of your mint, plant it in well-drained soil or a potting mix that drains well such as #Searles Herb & Vegetable Specialty Mix. 09.01.2022 How to store your potting mix bags correctly. If you don’t intend to use your newly purchased bags of potting mix or composts straight away for gardening or potting up, store unopened bags in a dry, sheltered area away from the sun and moisture. This will also limit the availability of insects accessing the bags to make a home for themselves. This advice also applies to any leftover half-filled bags. Reseal bag tightly before storing it away.... Remember: potting mix does degrade over time. If you have had a bag in the shed for over 12 months, spread the old mix onto a garden bed and buy a fresh new bag of potting mix for potting new plants. The old adage applies, ‘fresh is best’. 06.01.2022 Five reasons why azaleas fail to flower Location: Have any trees nearby grown over the last year giving your azalea more shade? Or conversely, have any been removed that expose your azalea to more sunlight? Even if you have had the plants for a long time, it never hurts to double-check that they are properly located. Watering: There is a delicate balance to maintain when it comes to watering azaleas as they cant be allowed to dry out but also dont like "wet feet" eit...her. Fertiliser: Be sure to feed your azaleas with a fertiliser ideal for acid loving plants such as #Searles Azalea & Camellia Plant Food. Pruning: Have your pruning habits changed at all in the last year? For azaleas, the current years blooms stem from flower buds developed during the prior summer. If you pruned later than normal last year, you may have inadvertently removed the flower buds. Weather: What has the weather in your region been like over the past year? While that may be a lot to ask as some of us have trouble remembering yesterdays weather , it could hold the key to your problem.
