23.01.2022 Well be at 110 Bells Road, Bells Beach this Sunday (Sustainable House Day) guiding people through what is a complete package of a house as far as sustainability goes. We invite everyone to come and find out how this house requires very little winter heating and no summer cooling. It has great examples of passive solar design, high performance windows, solar electricity & hot water, waste water treatment, indigenous plants and a production garden. The house is open from 10 am until 4 pm, entry is free and there is a great chance youll find something to be inspired by!

21.01.2022 Love this idea: community resource sharing, lower your carbon footprint, all that good stuff!

20.01.2022 Hows this for an innovative product to help insulate your home! Add it to the paint you use on your house.... "Originally developed by NASA, each microsphere is a tiny hollow ceramic ball no longer than a piece of sand. They reflect and refract heat like the tiles on the space shuttle. The centre of the ball is not only hollow but has all the air removed to create a vacuum. The resulting microsphere is, in effect, a mini thermos flask. On internal walls and ceilings this re...duces heat loss, creating a warmer room. On external walls and roofs, this relects the heat from the sun, creating a cooler internal room. It can also greatly reduce condensation and hence mould and fungus growth in areas like bathrooms by keeping the wall surface warmer." See more

19.01.2022 Want to win an easy $1,000? All you have to do is write why you choose to act sustainably in this competition!

19.01.2022 Melbournes Sustainable Living Festival has gone mobile & there are plenty of events still to happen in the Geelong area, including workshops on earth shelters, growing & making your own food, composting, stormwater treatment, revitalising neighborhoods and more. Check it out!

18.01.2022 An enjoyable day was had helping out with Sustainable House Day at Aaron & Hollys house in Torquay on Sunday. Here Aaron gives a rundown on some of the features in their home which is a typical first home owners house. Aaron & Holly were able to work with the builder to incorporate many sustainability measures without going over budget. Simple things like good orientation of the house so that living areas have good access to northerly sun, design of eaves to keep summer sun... out and good cross flow ventilation for cooling. All of these things are free and have a large influence over how much heating and cooling is required in the home to stay comfortable. Combined with clever use of insulation and insulating building materials, ceiling fans, double glazing to trap the energy of winter sun and honeycomb blinds, the temperature does not rise above 27 degrees in summer and stays above 14 degrees in winter. No air conditioning required! Photo courtesy of Julia Brangwyn & thanks to SCEG & Julia for organizing the weekend of events! See more

17.01.2022 Second Nature Engineering is proudly sponsoring Sustainable Houses Day on Sunday 9th September. We will be on hand at a feature packed house in Bells Beach to guide visitors and assist with information. More information to come!

14.01.2022 Nice article on a presentation I did for Surf Coast Shire on how to manage stormwater quality discharging from the proposed development in the Spring Creek valley at Torquay. Front page of this weeks Surf Coast Times.

13.01.2022 Second Nature will be at the Torquay Design Cafe at the Torquay Angling Club from 2 till 5 pm this Sunday. If you have a building project coming up, come and have a chat and receive free sustainability advice. Eight design experts will be there.

10.01.2022 A big success with Sustainable House Day at the Bells Beach house today. We had about 200 people come thru and many went away inspired by the array of earth friendly features on display. Just shows that you dont have to live in a small box with few windows to be sustainable! Thank you so much to Gail and John for opening up your house to the public and well done to Julia and the SCEG crew for organising it!

09.01.2022 Only 2 days to go until Sustainable House Day this Sunday. Ill be providing information at the feature packed Bells Beach house, 110 Bells Road from 10am until 4pm. There are also two sustainable gardens open in the Torquay area and another earth friendly house at Deans Marsh. Check the Surf Coast Energy Group website http://sceg.org.au/ for more details and make a day of it!

09.01.2022 I have been heartened today to learn that Engineers Australia is having an information session on environmental accounting, that is, how do we value the natural environment and use that data in the planning and feasibility stages of engineering projects? I havent been to any of these events for at least a decade but Ill be going to this one!

08.01.2022 This vacant site adjacent the Gateway Plaza Shopping Centre is currently having a McDonalds constructed upon it. Second Nature Engineering was called upon to review the civil engineering design associated with the stormwater treatment and detention system. Runoff from the site had the potential to contain harmful pollutants and the site drains to a sensitive wetland in the Gateway Sanctuary on the opposite side of the Bellarine Highway. The treatment measures that we recommended to protect the wetland and the main drainage system were able to be incorporated into the design.

08.01.2022 Today is a great day to visit an open house , Sustainable House Day, find an open home near you,http://www.sustainablehouseday.com/

06.01.2022 Its exciting being a part of a new consulting hub in Torquay, Victoria. Here is an article about it in this weeks Surf Coast Times

06.01.2022 "Although solar is still only a relatively small component of Australias energy mix, its growth is so rapid and its costs are shrinking so quickly that solar threatens to upend the entire structure of the Australian energy sector. Thats got a lot of people very excited. Its got many established players in the energy industry very worried"

05.01.2022 Fossil fuel subsidies are a major contrinutor to climate change. Paid to Pollute Campaign Launch, Sunday, 17 February 2013 11am - 12pm The Edge, Federation Square

05.01.2022 Looking forward to sponsoring & helping out again at this years Sustainable House Day. Get along & get inspired!

05.01.2022 Currently working on upgrading the environmental credentials of this 33 year old building in Ryrie Street, Geelong. Second Nature is looking at ways to improve the buildings energy, water, stormwater, materials, indoor environment quality, transport, waste and urban ecology.

05.01.2022 Some very interesting green technologies here. Well worth a look

05.01.2022 As one of the sponsors of this years Sustainable House Day, Second Nature is looking forward to being a part of it all on Sunday 9th Sept. Great work SCEG!

05.01.2022 I had an interesting chat to Felicity from eColour the other day. Not only are their paints free of any VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emissions, they are derived from recycled engine oil! All the pollutants are taken out of the used oil of course. The big paint companies promote their low VOC paints, but eColor has no VOCs

04.01.2022 Excited to announce that after 10 years working in a home office, Second Nature Engineering will be expanding into an office in Torquay. Getting some carpentry and electrical work done at the moment and moving in next week.

04.01.2022 Second Nature Engineering was very pleased to be a part of the recently completed Meredith Streetscape Project. Each of the 4 corners of the town centre have been transformed into areas that are more useable by the general public. Second Nature provided parking and stormwater drainage design. Landscape design & project management by Perry Mills. If youre on your way to the Meredith Music Festival this weekend, check out the new living area in front of the pub, complete with couch. It recognises those punters who roll up with one or more couches upon which they absorb the music for the weekend.

04.01.2022 This grassy slope in Bellbrae is the future site of a low impact zorbing facility. Zorbing is the recreation of rolling downhill inside an orb made of transparent plastic. Second Nature Engineering has assisted with concept plans for planning purposes and will provide detailed engineering design for the zorb tracks, water management and other civil works.

03.01.2022 An interesting project that Second Nature provided the thermal performance assessment for a couple of years ago, inspired by the restaurant attached to the Burj Al Arab in Dubai realestate.com.au
