25.01.2022 With 8 days to go until the Surf Coast Century Ultra Marathon, wed like to take a moment to reflect on the reason behind the run. Its important to remember that behind all the numbers are people, families and communities impacted by suicide. The sad truth is that 8-10 Australians take their lives everyday. One in Five believe research is the key to finding learning more about mental illness and hopefully unlocking cures. 21.01.2022 Schizophrenia affects approximately one in 100 people worldwide and has a significant genetic component Schizophrenia is a brain illness that affects the way a person thinks, feels and acts. Schizophrenia is characterised by two or more of the following symptoms: Delusions, hallucinations, disorganised speech, disorganised or catatonic behaviour or negative lifestyle symptoms such as social withdrawal, reduced motivation/interest, inappropriate responses. One of the most debi...litating symptoms is reduced cognitive function. The Floreys research looks at understanding molecular changes in the brains of people with schizophrenia as a step toward identifying potential new drug treatment targets. Our scientists are exploring the link between sex steroid hormones and schizophrenia. Estrogen and progesterone are thought to be protective. Zinc imbalance in the brain is another exciting avenue of research, with altered zinc regulation in the brains of people with schizophrenia. Florey scientists have developed a novel model of zinc regulation which may lead to new drug development leads. 21.01.2022 In 2016, there was a positive correlation observed between age and likelihood of probable serious mental illness. The proportion of young people meeting the criteria for having a probable serious mental illness rose from 20.8% among 15 year olds to 27.4% among 18/19 year olds. 17.01.2022 Anxiety onset peaks in adolescence (age 13-19), and adolescent-onset anxiety leads to more severe symptoms and poorer outcomes (e.g. suicide) than adulthood-onset anxiety. Importantly, adolescents are more resistant to therapy and are more prone to relapse after therapy compared to adults. Florey scientists are conducting both pre-clinical and human studies to compare adolescent and adult brain structure and chemistry and using this information to develop new treatment interv...entions in adolescent anxiety. 13.01.2022 The 2019 Australian Workplace Psychological Safety Survey found that 23% of workers do not currently do any activities to connect them with colleagues. This is concerning considering leading suicidologist Dr Thomas Joiners work, which describes a lack of connection (or lack of belonging) as one of the three forces at play in someone at risk of suicide. One of the biggest barriers found was not having time due to workload. One in Five believe more research is needed to discove better treatments and hopefully unlock cures surrounding mental illness. 12.01.2022 Next Saturday Im running a 100km Solo Ultra Marathon for Mental Illness Research with our running group Second Wind. I havent been overly vocal here, wanted t...o do it all in one hit. To me the distance represents the struggle that 1 in 5 of us endure daily with Mental Illness. I cant imagine the pain Harry had to endure which ultimately drove him to take his own life in Feb this year. We dont know enough about the brain and why 1 in 5 of us are prone to mental illness with 8-10 Australians taking their lives daily. Our charity partner One in Five dedicates 100% of funds towards mental illness research via the Synapse Biology & Cognition Lab at The Florey Institute, and through the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neuroscience at Monash University. Lets help them pursue some answers and hopefully one day unlock cures. After 930km of training runs, a marathon most weekends and a month off the booze, Im feeling pretty ready. Weve already surpassed $10K and are stretching our goal to $15K. Motivate me by contributing to this very worthy cause https://give.everydayhero.com/au/second-wind Follow our social pages for race updates next Saturday and explore our 100 days of mental health awareness content https://www.facebook.com/secondwindrc/ https://www.instagram.com/second_wind_rc/ Track my progress on race day here (bib number 48)https://racemap.com/play/surf-coast-century-2019_2019-09-20 ONE IN FIVE ONE IN FIVE Extreme Challenge Rapid Ascent Surf Coast Century 2019

08.01.2022 In March 2019, a creative, intelligent, articulate and much loved young man named Harry Strelec succumbed to mental illness. The pain of his illness had become so intolerable he was driven to take his own life. Harrys tragic story is all too common. Harrys story inspired us to come together and form Second Wind to address one of Australias biggest health issues Mental Illness. Mental health is rarely treated like other illnesses. One in five is different from all other m...ental health charities. They are the only ones that are 100% dedicated to raising funds for medical research. They believe research is the key to finding the answers, discovering better treatments and hopefully unlocking cures. Please help our cause by giving whatever you can using the Give Now button. The more people that know about this, the greater the impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family.
