25.01.2022 Iain Field from Tongola Cheese and Leap Farm in Southern Tasmania took a few minutes out of his Farm Gate Market set up last Sunday to talk to me about his experience in Seedlab Bootcamp. 25.01.2022 Before Seedlab I was building towards a great product but just an ok business. I had lots of ideas and not enough plans or action, says NOYA Spirits founder, Ian Spkyes. Then I found Seedlab and thought it would be great to connect with other Tasmanian small business Tasmania and learn from experts and real people who were further along in the business journey. One thing Ian didn’t expect was just how much Seedlab would help with his business confidence. The Seedlab... experience has really helped inform and solidify my business plans and direction which has resulted in real confidence to move forward. A key difference that Seedlab has made for Ian is improving his ability to communicate with an array of stakeholders. I now have the ability to speak intelligently to different stakeholders and service providers about elements of our business, brand, target market and so forth. He also has a clear plan of action for his product launch in June 2021 and he is part of an incredible community of Tasmanian business owners and experts. I have had an introduction to a really amazing group of experts and business owners that presented to the Seedlab group who I feel I could contact for specific advice as the situations arise. Ian would recommend Seedlab to any Tasmanian startup, small or medium business. Seedlab is broad enough that it could take your idea to a start-up business, your ok business to a great business, or even help breathe new life into an old or dry business through a new or innovative pivot! Applications are open and close on September 21st, so APPLY NOW! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SeedlabAppFB - Applications close 5pm September 21st, 2020 If you have already applied between Feb 2020 and now, and received an email acknowledgement, there is no need to re-apply. For eligible Tasmanian startups only. See more

23.01.2022 Seedlab had a thought-provoking discussion with Barbara Bray MBE last week, live from the UK. Barbara is a Nuffield Scholar as well as an Independent Registered Nutritionist and Food Safety consultant. Barbara spoke about trends in the UK in recent months, and some of the challenges for marketing nutritious food. In March, internet searches for foods for immunity, vitamin c, and health spiked rapidly, however there was a sharp increase in alcohol sales and unhealthy snac...king at the same time. Recently, local sourcing of food is gaining traction, as it is here in Australia: Local butchers and greengrocers are doing well and people are getting closer to producers. Barbara also mentioned environmental eating - with a mind to the Planet and health: vegan, plant-based, carbon foot print, plastic reduction. Barbara talked about the UK system for making health claims - which is different to Australia, but with a common dilemma of how to get the scoring messages across to the consumer. Barbara gave the example of Waitrose Supermarket, who have a system in store to take a personal swab from you, after which you receive a message on your phone with a list of what you should and shouldn’t eat and you can scan the products in-store to see if they suit your needs nutritionally! A fantastic conversation Barbara, thank you for joining us. See more

20.01.2022 On Friday night Seedlab opened its doors (via Zoom) to people from all around the world to join us for a sip of sangria Denise Hamblin, Head of Sensory at Kantar, shared with us insights and examples of how businesses are bringing the sensory experience of food, wine and place to consumers using technology, innovation and great ideas. We were joined by people heavily involved in food and agri-tourism from the UK, Italy, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria an...d all over Tassie. Two of our participants were in hotel lockdown in Devonport and Brisbane! It was a fun evening, with discussion about ways to bring products to life, and help consumers engage with the process of production and to get a sense of place. One of the new faces to Seedlab, Clare Hamilton-Bate (live from Brisbane hotel lockdown!) said, thanks again for inviting me to drinks really interesting presentation and great company so many interesting take-outs! Thanks for joining us for a fantastic Friday evening, Denise! See more

20.01.2022 It was an honour to have Mandy Hall from Masterchef join us for Fabulous Ferments & How To Control Them! Mandy had this to say about her experience attending our virtual workshop: Hats off for a great session yesterday, there’s no doubt that so much of our learning is born simply out of doing, for me the showing and sharing of ferments & food is what lights my fire On top of the doing, I spend a tonne of time on the learning! That learning comes in so many ways, ther...e’s the formal qualifications but then there’s beautiful relationships and collaborations. Thanks for joining us, Mandy! See more

17.01.2022 Recently Seedlab heard from Global Gurus and Local Legends in the finance world First up was Ken Fleming and Malcolm McAully from Pure Foods Tasmania followed by Matthew Brownlie from Barrington Treasury Services. Michael Harvey and Peter Sypkes then ran a great session on raising investment and we finished up with a real-life capital raising story from Dr Davina Gregory-Dunsmuir. We learned about the four different types of business, each built with differen...t exit strategies in mind: the ‘Lifestyle Choice’, the ‘Lifelong Investment’, the ‘Business Venture with Partners’ and the ‘Business Built for Future Sale’. We learned a few different things that investors will want to know during capital raises, such as: your Unique Selling Point (USP), your business value, your cashflow and assets, your personal plan & exit timeline and your mitigation of risk planning just to name a few! Lastly, Davina warned us about the Goldilocks principle when you’re raising capital don’t ask for little, don’t ask for too much. Know exactly how much you need to raise! Thanks to all our wonderful speakers for such an informative day. See more

15.01.2022 Before joining Seedlab I had started my business but it was not focused on the right product and my brand & marketing were well a bit of a mess! reveals Rachel Tulloch, founder of Seedsations. I had founded the business on my own, but I wanted help and input to build my dream. Since joining Seedlab, Rachel feels like she’s gotten a lot more than she bargained for! I got sooo much more than I was expecting. From receiving help to rebrand, coming to grips with socia...l media, getting a good understanding of exporting as well as getting a better understanding of what retailers are looking for and require and more! Rachel has also received mentorship from experts and formed close friendships with local business owners who are in similar stages of growth. Nearly six months in, Rachel couldn’t be happier with the progress she has been able to make. To be honest, I am overwhelmed with the difference it has made in my little business. I now have a clear path and structure where to take my business, my sales have gradually increased, and I am more confident with my knowledge on how to achieve my goals. Rachel wholeheartedly encourages any small business in the food, drink or agri-tourism space to consider joining Seedlab. The information, mentorship and friendships I have gained from Seedlab will stay with me for a lifetime. I feel honoured to have been a part of this program. 14.01.2022 Supporting Our Tasmanian Churchill Fellows. Some great conversations to be had here:

14.01.2022 Our Cultivators were treated to an amazingly useful and open conversation with Nick Nikitaras of Hill Street Grocer last week. We were hanging on his every word, and were blown away by what he shared! If you want to supply Hill Street your product needs to be: Packaged well (simple and clean);... Not be too similar to something they have many of already - you'll just have to compete on price. Being Tasmanian is a big deal. Customers will pay more. You will need good quality photographs to help the marketing team help you. Be ready to undertake tastings - and to have a plan for this. Customers love speaking to producers. Make yourself easy to do business with: be easy to order from; send in invoices in a set format, and statements. Be proactive - think about how your product could be sold to best effect. Hill Street want you to help make sure your product is on the shelf and selling well. Keep your product the same price everywhere you sell it - even at markets and online. Finally (and unexpectedly) Nick offered to set up individual catch ups with our startups to see how to get their products into his stores! It sure pumped up Rachel Tulloch from Seedsations who said: That meeting with Nick was AMAZING! Much more than we could have ever hoped for! I have the same feeling right now as if I have won the lottery with Seedlab. THANK YOU! See more

13.01.2022 Seedlab is all about hearing from Global Gurus and Local Legends. Last week we had a rip-roaring session with lifelong foodie, John Ranicar of Forager Foods from Deloraine, Tas. John grew up in a family to whom developing food producing businesses comes second nature. From eels to apple wedges, and rice cakes to freeze-dried beetroot powder he’s done it all and more, besides. John shared some interesting approaches to taking on board growth and risk even in thes...e challenging times. He shared many great insights with us, just some of which include: The more you grow - the more money you need and the harder it is. It doesn’t matter how much revenue you get there is always another, bigger, faster, more versatile machine that you need. Think about what you will need for the future, not just the present: buy the biggest bit of kit you can justify. Make sure you have space (John advises 1/3rd of your factory) for storage of finished goods and packaging. Don't go to market until you know can supply. You need the right people. You may produce the best product in the world but to do that, you need the right people. We love people like you, John and thanks for coming to share with us in Seedlab! See more

During Bootcamp I worked on really targeting my customers and now know the message I need to work on. Having just kept going without taking the time to stop and really focus on important things like this, I really appreciated the chance just to stop and reflect on what is working and what is not. Robyn Mayne, A Pinch of Tasmania The Seedlab staff were exceptional and we hope to utilise their skill and expertise in the future. 06.01.2022 This week marks the sixth and final session of Design Your Future, a collaboration between Seedlab and Story & Brand. Design Your Future paired 8 talented young designers with 7 of our Cultivators, taking them on a journey to better understand the creative process between client and designer with aim of producing fantastic new logos for each business. We are thrilled with the positive feedback from our participants who’ve been part of this flagship collaboration: ... The branding activities have challenged me in ways I had not anticipated. [My designer] listened to me and challenged me with a range of concepts. We worked together as I responded to each concept and graded the concept according to the criteria identified in the Design Brief. It was an excellent pairing and we have arrived at a development of one design that satisfies all the requirements of my brief. Breadarchitect Artisa had been considering a logo refresh for a while and our designer nailed the brief to deliver a logo that was premium yet contemporary, and natural yet sophisticated. We love our end result and can’t wait to see it on our packaging one day. - Artisa I have loved the Design your future process, with the mentoring provided by Andy and Iain from Story & Brand I have learnt how to get the message across to designers, how to look at the work when they bring it back, and how to really understand the process of getting the right designs for my brand. Seedsations The a-ha moment for me was the concept of stretchiness. Of using the brand in a number of ways, in more abstract ways that make people think but which still resonate with the brand. Blue Trail Gin A very big thank you to our wonderful collaborators, Andy and Ian, and an especially big thank you to our wonderful young designers and the participating Cultivators! See more

05.01.2022 Before I joined Seedlab Tasmania, I knew I needed help to move my business start-up from a ‘hobby’ to a proper, long term, business. I had published a book about making good bread without gluten, and it was beginning to sell around the world. Most of what I was doing was on-the-fly, and frankly, left a bit to be desired. says Chris Stafferton, owner of Breadarchitect Chris applied for Seedlab, looking for help to make a better transition from hobby to business. However, ...he got far more than he ever expected. Well beyond the help to understand what it means to run a business, Seedlab helped Chris to see that with his knowledge and skills he could do more than write books and recipes, he could develop a range of no-fuss, authentic, artisanal sourdough bread kits that make bread without gluten into bread worth sharing. 6 months into the Seedlab program and Chris has a much better understanding of how to run Bread Architect, and he knows where to turn to make that happen. He has a better understanding of how to target and engage his customers, has a better grasp on costings and cash flow and is learning how to develop food products for local, national and export markets. If Chris had one piece of advice for anyone wanting to grow their business? Seedlab is a dangerous place if you want to live a boring and quiet business life! Applications are open and close on today at 5pm, so APPLY NOW! https://www.seedlabtasmania.com.au - If you have already applied between Feb 2020 and now, and received an email acknowledgement, there is no need to re-apply. For eligible Tasmanian startups only.

05.01.2022 I did not know what was possible before Seedlab. I had a small startup that could trickle along, but I knew there was so much that I needed to learn to connect with customers in a meaningful way, and I did not know where to find this out says Pippa Mills, co-owner of Glen Torrie Pastures. Pippa applied for Seedlab looking for more information about business marketing, among other topics. What she didn’t expect was the depth of information Seedlab would provide. Where... I was just touching the surface of so many aspects, Seedlab has dived deep and helped me to create a big picture. Nearly 6 months in, Pippa believes she has the seeds of a much bigger picture and knows where to turn to make that happen. She better understands how to target and engage her customers, has a better grasp on costings and cashflow and even has her eye on potential export markets with a plan for how to target them. If Pippa had one piece of advice for anyone wanting to grow their business? Seedlab without a doubt changes your life. Applications for the second round of Seedlab Tasmania are NOW OPEN.
