23.01.2022 Formerly a cluster of commercial shops anchored by a medical centre this brown field site was the diamond in the rough for one of our clients. (Can you guess? Hint: It's one of the largest supermarkets in Australia. Starts with 'A.) The site provided an entry into the pulsing and vibrant retail precinct in Hawthorn, Adelaide.... Our brief was to realise the potential of this prime blue chip site with a contemporary retail offering for the local community and we're so ecstatic to witness how this project turned so beautifully. 22.01.2022 Long before the COVID-19 inspired resurgence of interest in rural and coastal property, we helped the owners of a magnificent property nestled on the Merri River to achieve their country dream. Riverview Lodge required a careful and sensitive design in sync with the landscape while taking advantage of the rural views. The simple pavilion design was inspired by the local dairy industry and allowed the owners to close down the separate pavilions as required. Internal courtyards... provided a hierarchy of outdoor spaces and protection from the southwest winds. After a "disastrous" experience with another product during a previous project, Paul Clohesy, Senior Architect at Select and his team did extensive research before opting for Ever Art Wood. The Mizutsuki batten and bolt fix system addressed Select's requirements while achieving the intended aesthetic of timber. A concealed fix system, Mizutsuki battens also allowed Select to achieve a perfectly flat and smooth surface. The Mizutsuki batten incorporates a full-length channel along the backside to which a bolt is fed through and affixed to an 'L' bracket. The 'L' bracket can be fixed directly to a structure or posts. 20.01.2022 After a challenging school year, it’s exciting to see work underway to create a competition grade gym at St Helena Secondary College in Eltham North. The project not only expands the school’s sports facilities, it creates an architectural feature they can be proud of. We particularly love the effect created by the translucent Wonderglas sheeting, a gel-coated fibreglass manufactured by Australian company Ampelite. 09.01.2022 The setting of the site and surrounding uses required a carefully considered design response that departed from the generic store design of our client ALDI Australia. The site itself presented challenges with: an abutting creek heritage trees a steep topography... activation of a key intersection All of which required a close partnering collaboration with the council. Despite the challenging environment and commercial setting, the Select Architects team was able to bring this project to fruition. 07.01.2022 TEAM SPOTLIGHT Solving challenging design problems and achieving that break-through moment is what really motivates our Senior Associate Dierijk Drent. And since joining Select Architects two years ago, he’s had plenty of opportunities to do both, having worked on many healthcare, education and residential design projects.... While COVID-19 has seriously challenged assumptions about the use and function of our built environment, Dierijk is looking forward to seeing what interesting (and hopefully positive) changes will come out of this time. He’s excited to resume his work with Geelong’s Give Where You Live Foundation, creating a new headquarters and social innovation lab, a project with strong community benefits. In his spare time, self-confessed ‘design geek’ Dierijk is always working on something interesting. He’s recently completed a fun little studio design for a mate and he thinks we’ll be seeing more backyard workspaces popping up in households around the country as more people embrace working from home. One of our current projects is an expansion and refurbishment of the Colac store, due for completion on December 9. Colac residents will enjoy an improved shopping experience and product range, with the project increasing the floor space by 230 sqm (approx 27 per cent). The Colac expansion, while a fairly straightforward design, also presented a number o...f challenges that needed to be resolved during the design stage - from relocating a bus stop, diverting a sewer and relocating fire services to accommodating new equipment, minimising the loss of car parking spaces and matching discontinued bricks. 03.01.2022 With Victorian secondary school students finally returning to face-to-face learning, we’ve been reflecting on the importance of effective, purpose-built learning spaces. Designing for the education sector is one of our key areas of expertise. We recently worked with Al Taqwa College in Truganina on preliminary design for an expanded gymnasium and assembly area. The complexities of an infill site along with ensuring a coherent master plan for the college were central to our approach. We couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome. The project will deliver a place of significance and pride for the college and community.
