03.01.2022 Diabetes making you feel depressed? Depression making your diabetes worse? How do our bodies reflect their medical status in our mental health? I have counselled many clients for depression and anxiety who also have diabetes. It can be exhausting and emotionally draining to constantly need to check blood sugar levels and be diligent about food intake. ... The constant stress of going out and wondering if the body might become hypoglycemic can create a constant state of anxiety, with worry about being caught out in public without help. Spending too long without eating, succumbing to tempting foods while dining out, or feeling the embarrassment or concern about drawing attention to your condition can lead to medically-poor choices and a low feeling afterwards. When my clients who have diabetes come to session, along with a quick check in on their current level of anxiety and stress, I may ask how they are tracking with their glucose levels. Sometimes my clients have not seen their doctor lately but as they tell me about how they feel there are clues to something that might be contributing to their low or anxious mood. Diabetes can cause mood fluctuations. We have to pay attention to mood swings, and ups and downs, chronic tiredness, a fatigue that occurs at certain times of the day. Not being able to think clearly. We can easily attribute these symptoms to signs of depression, but it could also be a problem with blood sugar levels. And vice versa. They are not mutually exclusive. A poor quality of life and unhealthy habits can cause depression, while depression increases poor health habits and decreases quality of life. As a counsellor, I can help people feel supported and understood. I can help with goals, decision-making about habits, I can help people cope better, and set goals to decrease stress and increase sense of control and well-being. It can be helpful for all Allied Health Professionals to look out for a relationship between a client’s physical symptoms and mental distress, and be holistic in our approach to our client’s needs. My role is not to diagnose a medical issue, but to work with a client holistically. Because I am looking after the whole person mind, heart and body.
