25.01.2022 We hope all our friends in the Servas community are keeping safe, well and happy!

25.01.2022 World Tourism United: One Song, 50 Affected Countries, Amazing! A wonderful world response to COVID-19.

24.01.2022 Members will no doubt have seen unsettling reports of racist responses that have erupted in parts of the Australian community. In this Commonwealth of ours, the board and membership of Servas Australia strongly desire both to distance ourselves from such appalling behaviour and to affirm our belief in the humanity of all people. Peace amongst the people of all lands was the primary aim of the founders of our organisation; it has remained at the very forefront of our continuin...g efforts and aims. We encourage you to be active in your efforts to overwhelm the troubling antics of the vocal minority seeking to disrupt the community at a most challenging time. You can do so by maintaining your own commitment to peace, and by expressing that commitment in speaking up for humanity. Write letters to newspapers, text or tweet your messages of hope and reconciliation to the media. Let it be known that Servas is an agency of peace in our land and beyond. Please read and heed the message from Servas International - https://servas.org/en/news/corona-virus-covid19-announcement Derek Curnow President, Servas Australia

23.01.2022 Many overseas visitors are familiar with our fauna such as the koala, kangaroo and also perhaps the kookaburra. But have you ever seen or heard a Lyrebird? They are also the image on our 10c coin. They are one of the greatest mimics! They have even been known to impersonate the electric winder on a camera and hammering if they have nested near a construction site. How many animal or noises can you identify with this guy?

22.01.2022 Does your passport look like this?

21.01.2022 From our Peace Secretary, Chloe Mason: You may have heard about this extraordinary story to drop the prosecution of Bernard Collaery and Witness K. https://www.abc.net.au//part-of-witness-k-lawyer-/12397584 Yesterday (2 September 2020) The Australia Institute held a webinar and the support group asked for help:... https://ipan.org.au/will-you-support-the-statement-seeking/ Bernard Collaerys book "Oil under Troubled Water. Australias Timor Sea Intrigue" (2020 Melbourne University Press) tells the story. Ive just started reading about Australias foreign policy toward its island neighbours and the exploitative, dishonest treatment of Timor Leste. The webinar focussed on looking to the future how we can make (some) amends, and apologies.

20.01.2022 Please see Corona virus announcement from Servas International. Stay safe everyone

19.01.2022 Today, 25 April, Australians and New Zealanders celebrate Anzac Day. A day where we remember all those who served in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations around the world. With social distancing this year, we are unable to hold our usual dawn services or parades through the streets but were encouraged to put poppies on our letterboxes and stand together in our driveways at 5.55am. Here is a performance of Waltzing Matilda by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra together with 300 singers created especially for this day. #AnzacDay

19.01.2022 This morning Sydney woke up to a beautiful display of poppies on the sails of the Opera House. Remembrance Day - 11 November 2020.

19.01.2022 SERVAS Gathering in Coffs Harbour - now cancelled. In an abundance of caution in response to the coronavirus threat, and in view of the low registrations to date, the board has reluctantly taken the decision to cancel the Coffs Harbour in-person meeting for our 2020 AGM. Instead, we will hold the 2020 AGM by teleconference at midday on Saturday 4 February. Teleconference details have been sent to all Servas Australia members via email.

15.01.2022 Servas Australia Members Passing It is with sadness I report the recent passing of Cathy Tighe from Coburg, Melbourne. She loved Servas and was an active member and interviewer. We offer our condolences to her family and friends. Of course, it is likely other members have passed on recently that we are not aware of. As above, we offer our condolences to the family and friends of these members.... Paul Nielsen (Membership Officer)

And of course, you will be able to ask the guide questions throughout the streaming. 09.01.2022 The UN has an announced that an international treaty banning nuclear weapons has now been ratified by a 50th country, Honduras. While nuclear powers have not signed up to the treaty, activists who have pushed for its enactment hold out hope that it will prove to be more than symbolic and have a gradual deterrent effect. https://www.theguardian.com//treaty-banning-nuclear-weapon

06.01.2022 We're doing social distancing here in Australia for COVID-19 (as are most of the world) .. even the cockatoos have got the message! #servas #peace #australia

05.01.2022 Keeping in touch .. In Tasmania we generally have three gatherings per year where members from across the state meet in one of our homes over shared lunch. We also share our stories of being Travellers and Hosts. This month we couldn't meet as we usually do, so decided on a virtual meeting instead. Thirteen of our members attended and shared stories of our last overseas adventures - a novel way of still being connected. Yours in Peace, Sonja (Servas Travel Officer, Tasmania)

04.01.2022 Here is a lovely initiative by Luis Miguel Avendaño from Servas Spain. He organised a video greeting by many Servas hosts around the world. You may be able to spot some familiar faces and Servas friends! #servas #peace Here is what Luis writes: "On the occasion of the confinement in many countries due to the covid19 virus, we have prepared a simple project to establish communication through "micro-videos" in order to greet each other, encourage us and feel the warmth and welcome in the affections of the entire Servas family represented in about 20 countries. This is like an international meeting where we have the opportunity to hear each other, to see us share greetings that may become future visits to our homes or places."

04.01.2022 Here is a great initiative that Servas members may like to get involved with: "Hello, I am Luis Miguel Avendaño. Member of Servas Spain. I was a National Secretary for 6 years and I have always been involved in the organization. In 2004 I organized the International Servas Conference in Barcelona. As we have been going through a difficult situation for a few months due to the COVID19 pandemic, and the activity of travelers and hosts has been paralyzed, I think it is a good id...ea to look for alternatives to continue to be in contact, greet each other and strengthen ties of friendship between the Servas family. I am collecting videos of about 4 seconds with a greeting from Servas to make a montage and publish them on social networks. If you want to collaborate, you or your Servas friends ... Record yourself with your mobile phone or camera and send it as soon as possible. Something as simple as a few words, recorded in your house, in your city with the background that you prefer, but with that enthusiasm and joy that you will surely share with many more people. Thank you for your collaboration, please spread it among your Servas friends, family or acquaintances. If you consider this inappropriate, please excuse me and delete this message. More information in English and Spanish on the Servas Spain website You can send me to my email [email protected] or by phone 0034 699 710 422 (WhatsApp) Deadline May 22 Greetings from Spain". #servas

03.01.2022 Skiing in Australia - yes, it is possible!

02.01.2022 What would my Mom think of that?" In a race, (see picture), athlete Abel Mutai representing Kenya, was just a few feet from the finish line, but he was confused... with the signage & stopped thinking he had completed the race. The Spanish athlete, Ivan Fernandez was right behind him & realizing what was happening, he started shouting at the Kenyan for him to continue running; but Mutai didn't know Spanish didn't understand. Then the Spanish pushed him to victory. A journalist asked Ivan, "Why did you do that?" Ivan replied, "My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life". The journalist insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win". The journalist insisted again, "But you could have won!" Ivan looked at him & replied, "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honour of that medal? What would my Mom think of that?" Values are transmitted from generation to generation. What values are we teaching our children? Let us not teach our kids the wrong ways & means to WIN #Ethics #Honesty https://youtu.be/HYqcqzSVH60
