03.01.2022 Drug Alert Cocaine & ketamine containing Fentanyl responsible for multiple hospitalisations October 2020 NSW Health has released a warning about the pr...esence of fentanyl and acetyl-fentanyl in cocaine and ketamine circulating around NSW Fentanyl is a very strong synthetic opioid, which can be up to 100x stronger than morphine. It can take less than a milligram to overdose - which is just a few grains. The risk of overdose is much higher if you aren’t a regular opioid user. Your risk of overdose increases drastically if you have been using other depressant drugs like alcohol, benzo’s, ketamine or GHB. Opioid overdoses can be reversed by administering Naloxone, which is available free in NSW pharmacies (see below) SIGNS OF OPIOID OVERDOSE: Drowsiness Loss of consciousness/passing out Face is very pale or clammy Slow, shallow, and/or erratic breathing Vomiting Change in skin tone: bluish/purple for lighter skinned people, and greyish for darker skinned people Seek medical help ASAP or call 000 if unwell REMEMBER: Know the signs of opioid overdose, and get help immediately Get naloxone Test your drugs with reagent test kits & or test strips If can’t test, start with small doses of new gear. Avoid mixing and don't use alone Avoid multiple doses or space them out if you are redosing Be on the lookout for unexpected symptoms like drowsiness when using cocaine! Be aware the effects of ketamine may present similarly to opioids. If anything doesn’t feel or seem right seek help immediately. HOW TO PROTECT YOU AND YOUR MATES Get Naloxone. Naloxone can reverse opioid overdoses (like fentanyl). Naloxone is easy and safe to use. Naloxone reverses the effects of opiate drugs (fentanyl, heroin, morphine), however due to fentanyl's, it can require multiple doses to reverse the effects. You can get naloxone as a nasal spray (just like hay fever meds) or as a simple intra-muscular injection. You do not need a prescription and it can be picked up for FREE in NSW pharmacies. Find the list of participating pharmacies here: https://yourroom.health.nsw.gov.au//THN-registered-pharmac. Free call NUAA 1800 644 413 to confirm availability. Naloxone could save you or a mates life- don't be caught without it, get it now. Test your drugs for fentanyl Fentanyl testing strips are safe and effective way to test whether your drugs contain fentanyl. NUAA use Rapid Response fentanyl strips. You can buy these online or you can contact NUAA (1800 644 413) and we will send you some (within NSW). If you can’t test your drugs, start with a very, very small dose. Wait at least an hour to make sure you don’t experience any unusual effects. If you do, don’t take any more & contact NUAA: 1800 644 413. For more information call NUAA’s PeerLine on 1800 644 413 (M-F, 9-5)

02.01.2022 International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers is observed annually on December 17 by sex workers, our advocates, friends, families and allies. Originall...y conceived as a memorial and vigil for the victims of the Green River Killer in Seattle Washington, United States (US), it has evolved into an annual international event. The day calls attention to violence and hate crimes committed against sex workers worldwide, as well as the need to remove the social stigma and discrimination that have contributed to violence against sex workers. As sex workers we recognise the role of criminalisation and policing practices play in perpetrating violence against us. http://www.december17.org/about/ On December 17, the International Day to End Violence against Sex Workers, sex workers and allies around Australia join together in remembrance of sex workers throughout the world whose lives have been lost needlessly to persistent and systemic violence against sex workers. Violence against sex workers is perpetuated by stigma and discrimination that is a consequence of the criminalisation of our work and the policing and harassment of sex workers. Criminalisation and police regulation of sex work create barriers to sex workers seeking to access support or justice when they experience violence and sends a message to perpetrators that sex workers can be targeted with impunity and without consequence. These impacts are even more keenly felt by sex workers who are disproportionately affected by stigma, discrimination, criminalisation and violence such as transwomen, Indigenous sex workers and other sex workers of colour, street based sex workers, drug users, and migrant sex workers. On December 17th, we recognise we cannot end the marginalisation and victimisation of all sex workers without also fighting transphobia, racism, stigma and criminalisation of drug use, and xenophobia.
