25.01.2022 All About Rockmelons A member of the gourd family, rockmelons (also known as cantaloupes and sweet melons) are related to watermelons and cucumbers. These medium sized round melons have a rough outer skin and juicy, sweet, slightly musky flesh. The rockmelon that we enjoy today originated in Asia, with its ancestry being traced back by millions of years. There are now two main cultivar groups of rockmelon the European with ‘warty’ skin and the American with ‘netted’ sk...in. The American cultivar is the one that we are most familiar with in Australia and it was first introduced to North America by Christopher Columbus in 1494. Now, the rockmelons that we enjoy in Australia, are grown in Australia! Rockmelons are a rich source of vitamins and antioxidants. They are high in vitamin C, vitamin A and potassium and are also a good source of vitamin K, B vitamins, magnesium, fiber, copper and folate. This fruit’s high water content is also a hydrating bonus when enjoyed on a hot day! Most commonly enjoyed fresh, Rockmelon makes a wonderful addition to fruit and savoury salads, served with yoghurt or ice cream, churned into sorbet, or finely chopped into a salsa. For a refreshing summer salad to enjoy as a side, give this Rockmelon & Fetta salad recipe a try: http://www.salamancafresh.com.au/rec/rockmelon-fetta-salad/

18.01.2022 Kalamata Olives: Named after the city of Kalamata in Greece where they were originally grown, Kalamata olives are a beautiful dark purple, with fleshy pulp and a single pip. Now grown around the world, these olives have been consumed by humans for thousands of years, since ancient Greek times. Once hand-picked fresh from the olive tree, they are either pressed for olive oil, or soaked in brine, fermented, and preserved. This process removes the bitter compounds within the o...live, creating a tasty, tender table olive. Their distinctive colour, oblong shape and large size make them easy to distinguish from black table olives. Kalamata olives have long been touted as one of the healthiest fruits available. High in sodium, rich in healthy fats and a good source of fibre, iron, calcium, vitamins A and E, these olives are also packed full of antioxidants. Kalamata olives are available both whole and pitted and enjoyed in many ways. Try mixing them in with a Mediterranean salad, dicing them and adding in bread dough, pitting and adding them to pizza topping or pasta sauce, puréeing them (once pitted) with capers and anchovies for a classic tapenade or simply enjoying them on their own!

15.01.2022 In 2005, David Walsh, creator of Mona, built a brewery and called it Moo Brew. Moo Brew has since grown into Tasmania's largest craft brewery and its much loved range of beers are all now crafted under the watchful eye of head brewer, Jack Viney. This week we have two tasty Moo Brews on special in our Salamanca, Davey St, Lenah Valley, Bellerive and Sandy Bay Stores. These are (as described by Moo Brew themselves): Pilsner - "Apparently you're only supposed to make pilsners... in Pilsen. We missed that memo, but we did get a bunch of German Spalt hops and put them into our take on a classic lager. The resulting brew is clean, crisp and award-winning (if that's your thing). Drinks well between noon and noon." Dark Ale - "Looks dark, smells dark, tastes... just dark enough. Goldilocks would love it. A mess of different hop varieties (each used sparingly) roil through a rich base of Crystal malts from the darker end of the spectrum, balancing roasted chocolate, caramel and subtle coffee flavours against the rest. Surprisingly sessionable." MOO BREW

07.01.2022 Bay of Fires Wines Bay of Fires Wines was founded in the 1990s by a team of dedicated winemaking and viticultural professionals, who believed Tasmania would one day become the pre-eminent Australian region to produce cool-climate Tasmanian wines. The entire Bay of Fires team is focused on one singular passion to share Tasmania's most outstanding wines with you. Their vision continues to rely on the search for the individual personalities found in every variety and viney...ard. The team crafts alluring wines that are distinctively Tasmanian, without compromising on consistency or quality. The wines are produced from hand-picked Tasmanian fruit, specially selected for quality and character. Each fruit parcel is kept separate so it can be constantly assessed in order to capture its unique essence at precisely the right moment. And then, in the finest oak available, the fruit is given the freedom to let nature work its magic. The evidence of the alchemy of this winemaking practice can be experienced in each and every Bay of Fires Wine. This week the Bay of Fires NV Cuvee Brut and Sparkling Rose are both on special for the hot price of only $24.99 each (until 22/09/20). Available in our Salamanca, Davey St, Lenah Valley, Bellerive and Sandy Bay stores. Bay of Fires Wines

07.01.2022 Cashews The cashew nut is grown on the cashew tree and is technically the seed that grows on the outside of the cashew apple fruit, instead of the inside. The cashew apple is ripe when it turns bright red and the exposed shell is a dark green/blue colour. While the apple is edible, it is considered an accessory fruit to the more popular ‘nut’. The cashew tree is native to north eastern Brazil with the name we know originating from the Portuguese name, Caju. Between 1560 and... 1565, the tree made its way to India by Portuguese sailors. It has since spread around the world and grows best in dry/wet tropics. The cashew tree is a member of the same family as poison ivy and poison sumac, meaning the shell contains toxins. For this reason, the shell is always removed and only the nut is consumed. However, the shell does not go to waste, being processed for use in many industrial products, such as lubricants and waterproofing. The nuts are rich in a range of nutrients, including protein, copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc and unsaturated fats. They are also rich in antioxidants such as polyphenols and carotenoids. Cashews can be enjoyed in a number of different ways they can be raw, roasted, salted and consumed on their own, crushed and mixed into desserts and meals or pureed to create vegan ice-cream and cheese! 02.01.2022 Home Hill White Pinot Noir In 2019, the Huon Valley experienced the worst bushfires since 1967. The smoke from these fires meant that Home Hill Winery were unable to make any of their acclaimed Pinot Noirs they were devastated to say the least! However, Home Hill got creative! By gently whole-bunch pressing the fruit and treating it like a white wine, their experienced winemakers were able to minimise the effect of the fires and produce what is now, the 2019 White Pinot... Noir. The wine is richer than other white wines, rare, refreshing and quietly trending. On special this week (until 15/09/20) for only $23 each, this unique drop is available in our Salamanca, Davey St, Lenah Valley, Bellerive and Sandy Bay stores. Home Hill Winery
