25.01.2022 Introducing our first ever garden competition! With all of this extra time we have had at home and in our backyards and gardens, we have noticed quite a lot of green thumbs out there! To keep this momentum going we are encouraging everyone to send photos in of their garden - the more creative and sustainable the better :) The team at Bunnings Arundel have generously donated ten $20 gift vouchers to be awarded to one entry per year level - so get growing!

25.01.2022 Happy National Science Week everyone!

24.01.2022 Wowza! We had no idea how many green thumbs we had at SFX! We received so many fantastic entries, the judges will have a hard time picking the winners when they are announced at tomorrow's assembly. Thanks to everyone who participated and got their hands dirty for our first SFX Home Garden competition

24.01.2022 Register now for the on-line 2020 Sustainability Symposium.

24.01.2022 Happy Biodiversity Month! A great chance for us to get out there and enjoy the biodiversity in our own school/backyard

23.01.2022 It's all about reusing and recycling! We'll be calling on our students to bring back their boxes from our first ever SFX Donut Drive to be used for the technology classes - everyone's a winner!

22.01.2022 Sustainability is not only about protecting our environment but also about ensuring sustainable cultures and communities. It is heartwarming to see people re-connecting with their local neighbourhood, remembering an era when we spent more time at home and looked after our neighbours. There are some great stories arising from across our globe about social sustainability.

21.01.2022 We had a great day when our Sustainability Committee had a field trip to our neighbouring conservation reserve, the Pine Ridge Conservation Park to get a bit of an understanding on the types - and amount of rubbish - that could be found throughout the area in lead up to their Clean Up Australia Day initiative later in the month. They were even paid a visit by one of the friendly and furry locals!

21.01.2022 Whether you are home-schooling or still at school, any Deadly 60 and Steve Backshall fans are going to be pretty excited with the main man himself doing a free Facebook Live Online Schooling event to keep the kids engaged with their love of wildlife and the environment. Streamed from the UK at 9:30am their time, this will be on live tonight at 7:30pm QLD time (if my calculations are correct!) where he'll be taking questions, but it will be available to re-watch through his Facebook page any time. A great initiative and a great way to keep the kids upbeat with some good news during these challenging times.

20.01.2022 Our Nude Food Month Campaign is still being embraced by the students and has turned into a really positive initiative that the kids can get involved in, especially with all of the other news and disruption! Another advantage of Nude Foods is students aren't having to use the bins and their foods are extra protected at lunchtime when their lunchboxes are open - everyone's a winner! :) Tomorrow our school will have a virtual assembly where the Year 6 Sustainability Committee will draw out this weeks winners

18.01.2022 The 2020 Sustainability Symposium is going ahead on-line with some fabulous guest speakers including Aussie film maker Damon Gameau. Everyone is invited to subscribe to the u-tube channel and register on-line.

18.01.2022 Finally a chance for us to have a say about plastic packaging. The QLD Government has released this survey. You have to register but it’s worth it - you can have a say about plastic straws, sushi containers, coffee cups and more!

15.01.2022 Happy World Environment Day 2020! Check out this beautiful video put together by the team at the Sustainable Schools Network and featuring the voice over from of our very own SFX students #fornature #worldenvironmentday

15.01.2022 We came across this great idea leading up to ANZAC day. Start stockpiling those egg cartons and put them to good use with making some poppies! You could even make a chain of them to hang outside your front fence on ANZAC day to show your respect due to the parades being cancelled. Post a pic if you can think of any other creative ideas for ANZAC day using things around the house!

14.01.2022 Save the Date kids! Colour theme dress up day, walk-a-thon, Talent Show and so much for our first ever Celebration of Learning of Day! More details to come but one piece of information you can be assured of is the kids are going to have a ball!!!

14.01.2022 Today is Wild Koala Day so we thought we would share some facts on what is happening to our wild koala population on the Gold Coast . . . There are less than 6,000 wild koalas left on the Gold Coast where a population in the tens of thousands had lived. The extreme amount of development on the Gold Coast has forced koalas into separate and small pockets causing inbreeding.... The main causes for the decline in the wild koala population are loss of habitat (development), chlamydia and bushfires. For more information about the Gold Coast koala population visit the GCCC website: https://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/environm/koalas-51455.html #WildKoalaDay

13.01.2022 We were lucky enough to have two very special visitors come to our school this afternoon and help us map up a plan and concept for a possible butterfly and bee garden at our school. Thank you to Bonnie from Native Plants Queensland, Gold Coast Branch and David from Koalas On The Green for taking the time out of your day and working with us in building something special for our school and the local wildlife

12.01.2022 Get set for our Bread Tag Collection Competition which launches next week! These pesky pieces of plastic cannot be recycled in our normal household yellow wheelie bins and millions of them end up in landfill every year which is a hazard to our wildlife. However, we are going to send our bread tags to an Australian charity which upcycles them into re-useable plates and bowls. 100% of the proceeds are used to purchase wheelchairs for people in need in South Africa. Let’s see which classroom can collect the most bread tags by the end of this term! Kathy

12.01.2022 We were delighted to have Mr David Crisafulli MP visit our school this morning to join our Year 6 Sustainability Committee in planting some trees to celebrate National Tree Day in schools across Australia. This also marks the beginning of a big garden makeover project to plant lots of natives for our butterflies, birds and bees.

11.01.2022 Sustainability isn't just about people, it's about our native wildlife as well and our SFX Sustainability Commitee was excited to be 'introduced' to a few locals who live in the Pine Ridge Conservation Park which neighbours our school and is also where we will be hosting our first ever Clean Up Australia Day event!

10.01.2022 There's an awesome Live chat happening on Facebook tonight for those who loved War on Waste and watched (or keen to re-watch!) the new Fight For Planet A series

10.01.2022 Something we all need to watch

09.01.2022 Wow!! We have received sooooooo many bread tags for our Bread Tag Collection Competition with one of our students bringing in a collection that she has been growing for a year! Keep them coming in everyone!

08.01.2022 Looking forward to it!

08.01.2022 What a great day for our Grade 6 Sustainability Committee where they all got a chance to get their hands dirty planting the first trees in our newly proposed Bee and Butterfly garden for the National Schools Tree Day. Our committee was joined by David Crisafulli - Broadwater MP and planted trees recommended by the team at Koalas On The Green so it was truly a community effort! St Francis Xavier Runaway Bay

07.01.2022 Us Gold Coasters have an extra 'bonus' day today! So make sure you get outdoors and make the most of it

06.01.2022 On Monday, two of our senior students were invited to attend the online Sustainability Symposium for Students hosted by the Sustainable Schools Network. They were involved in workshops and discussions on sustainability and changing mindsets and can't wait until we get back into the classroom and start putting some of these tools into practice! On Tuesday, some of our teachers and parents also participated in the online parents symposium and forum where they got to discuss sustainability in education with a range of experts including Damon Gameau, writer and creator of the 2040: The Regeneration documentary. For more information about the Sustainable Schools Network and they work they do, check out their website! https://www.ssn.org.au/

05.01.2022 Today is the 50-year anniversary of Earth Day! This environmental movement was born out of a common desire to solve global issues. There have been many victories over this time, as well as some new challenges. Now more than ever, we can see the impact we have on our planet, with less air and water pollution from us all staying at home. Let’s write a new future with this awareness in mind and create a sustainable future. To be involved in Earth Day go to Earth.Org But let's hear from the man himself, Sir David Attenborough, on how to save the planet . . . #EarthDay

05.01.2022 Something to keep those Wildlife Warriors entertained today for homeschooling (remember it's in NSW time!)

04.01.2022 St Francis Xavier Primary School is registered through the Sustainable Schools Network as we encourage our school community to engage in sustainable and environmentally friendly routines. They are also nominated in the My Giving Circle charity campaign where we are encouraged to vote for our favourite charity/organisation, so if you have a few spare moments, please flick these incredible organisation a vote so they can keep doing what they are doing

03.01.2022 Did you know there are close to 50 koalas living in the Coombabah Lakelands Reserve? This area is a precious habitat to many animals including kangaroos, echidnas, pelicans and more. Local photographer, Chris Gilbert, has captured the beauty of the Lakelands and collated these stunning photos into a coffee table book. You can grab a copy at the school office for only $20.

03.01.2022 An awesome new ABC TV + iview series that we'll be tuning into next week! #FightForPlanetA

02.01.2022 The 2020 Sustainability Symposium is LIVE on Facebook NOW if you want to tune in and hear from some inspiring guest speakers. Go to the Sustainable Schools Network.

02.01.2022 Due to the current restrictions, we have made the decision to postpone our Clean Up Australia Day event that was scheduled for tomorrow. We have rescheduled the event for the first Sunday in August. BUT! We can all still do our own part and clean up our own neighbourhood and help to make a difference

02.01.2022 September is Save the Koala Month so let's all think of ways we can make a difference in our local community to protect our previous Ozzie mascots

01.01.2022 Tomorrow is the day where we will be planting up a storm at our school with a special guest helping out! Stay tuned and remember to plant a tree!

01.01.2022 Happy World Oceans Day!
