10.01.2022 Friends of Burnie Penguins are pleased to be able to say that our guides will arrive to start the penguin viewing season in Burnie on Thursday October 1st at 6:...30pm; after the change to daylight saving time on October 4th, the start time will be 7:30pm. We will observe COVID 19 safety measures so the procedures will be a bit different this year. The Burnie colony has the advantage of plenty of space to allow social distancing. Guides may ask you to move from one spot to another, but that will be to insure everyone has a good chance to see penguins. Things may be a bit difficult for us humans at the moment, but the good news is that the penguins have not been effected at all so you will be able to watch and enjoy them. Our interpretive tours start every night at sunset. They are free and there is no need to make a booking. We do happily accept the donations which allow us to continue to give visitors a chance to watch penguins and to learn about them. Just make sure that you dress warmly as the viewing platform is exposed to the weather and can be very cold.

08.01.2022 You can help look after our locals and overseas visitors Shorebird nesting season is in full swing on Tasmanian beaches. Quieter beaches at Stanley, Rocky Cape,... East Inlet, and Peggs Beach Conservation Area offer little human disturbance, no vehicles, and few predators such as dogs and cats - a perfect environment for nesting shore birds. At other busier sites, the presence of humans, vehicles or dogs on the beach can scare a bird away from its nest, allowing the eggs to become too hot or cold and vulnerable to predators. You can help protect shorebirds nesting from October to March by avoiding the dry sand as this is where these little birds lay their eggs. Keep your dog on a leash, walk on the wet sand and ensure curious children are kept well away from nests. Keep an eye out for sooty and pied oystercatchers, masked lapwings, and hooded and red-capped plovers, all locals that can be spotted year-round. More excitingly, our overseas summer visitors include eastern curlews, caspian terns, little terns and ruddy turnstones. These amazing travellers journey from as far as Russia and Alaska! 07.01.2022 We are the only vineyard in Australia (and probably the world) that has three off lead areas. For first time Wine and Woofers ... here is how it works. Maeve's ...Vineyard - a 1 hectare area for medium to large dogs The Orchard - for small dogs Elsa's Vineyard - on the right as you enter. A quiet zone away from the bustle for those dogs not too sure about mixing with lots of others. Please stay with your dog. Around the cellar door area - it is all on lead due to our resident wildlife and not being fenced. Photo credit: Rachaeldphotography who will be available from 12-2 to take photos of your pooch.

04.01.2022 Yellow-throated Honeyeater (Nesoptilotus flavicollis) Habitat: Forested and wooded areas, including gardens with native vegetation. Diet: Gleans insects and fee...ds on nectar. Range: Endemic to Tasmania and ubiquitous across the state. Did you know?: They take fur from live animals to line their nests, including the hair of unsuspecting people! Share your Yellow-throated Honeyeater experiences (photos or stories) in the comments! Photos: Ian McFarlane (L) & Anon (R)

03.01.2022 Orange-bellied parrots should, by now, be winging their way towards Melaleuca. This gorgeous pair were photographed by Hobart Photographic Society member, Ian Robertson. Thanks, Ian

03.01.2022 #distillerycouch It is quite a while since I have given myself the luxury of sitting back on the couch at the end of the day. Hands on work in the distillery is... one thing but the ever increasing amount of paperwork (including virtual paper emails) just keeps piling up. As well as Belgrove whiskies I have started an independent bottling company with my eldest Son and some business associates. The Remnant Whisky Company . We have purchased several hundred barrels of aged single malt whisky from investors in a failed whisky investment scheme that was based at my Great Grandfather's old property Nant. Our first release " The Scoundrel" is on the market now and selling very quickly. Today we have been tasting and test blending some barrels for the next couple of releases. There are a few barrels that are beautiful and full of flavour but are over-mature, too woody. Maturing whisky in Australia is quite different from Scotland. Higher temperatures and fluctuating temperatures extract wood flavours very quickly, especially in smaller barrels. These woody noted are quite easily blended out by adding barrels that don't express enough wood notes. Tasting, sipping, spitting and finding the occasional one that I just have to swallow. As they say "hard work but someone has to do it" Back to Belgrove whisky, did you see the Gordon Ramsay show where I got him to shovel sheep shit? Now showing on Disney + Uncharted S2 E1 I often comment on the sounds I hear from the couch. Cow, sheep, crow, a starling, a small bird maybe a swallow. But now all masked by the heat pump hot water cylinder turning on. Enough rest for now, I think I am due for a coffee. See more

01.01.2022 We are currently seeking more "unknown" photos and films of the Tasmanian Tiger. https://www.facebook.com/groups/TasmanianTigerArchives/ We work hand in hand wi...th the International Thylacine Image Database run by Dr Sleightholme as well as the Tasmanian Library archives and The National Film and Sound Archives. Films 8 + 9 were discovered by us as well as the photo at the start of the post. http://www.naturalworlds.org/thylacine/captivity//films.htm? This photo turned up recently and was not known to the general public (listed anywhere) until a few weeks ago. If you have know of any old photos/postcards/8mm film etc of the thylacine that you think might not be listed/ well known, then can you please post them here and we can tell you if they are "new" (as in unrecognised) We are also interested in any post 1936 field reports. I can be contacted in messenger if people desire privacy :) Thanks!!
