25.01.2022 Remember when Anthony Albanese said way back in 2013 that to build the NBN network we should Do it once, do it right, do it with fibre? We should have a world class NBN by now with fibre to the home, but instead the Liberals have wasted billions of dollars only to admit that Labor was right all along!

25.01.2022 No one disputes the need for genuine reform of the family court, but last night’s deal between the Morrison Government, One Nation and South Australian Senator Rex Patrick is an exercise in brute force politics - ramming through a radical proposal to effectively abolish the Family Court of Australia. The Family Law Court has served Australia for over 40 years and this decision ignores the advice of more than 150 people and organisations with experience of our family law syste...m . This government is too lazy to do the hard yards when it comes to genuine reform. Make no mistake, this legislation will do nothing to put children’s safety back at the centre of our family law system and it does nothing to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those traumatised by family violence. What was the point of all those reviews if the government is not prepared to listen?

24.01.2022 Community Service Announcement Have you got a Takata airbag in your car? Many motorists are still driving around with a potentially deadly airbag subject to a global recall. There have been more than 330 injuries and 30 deaths reported worldwide from these airbags, including in Australia.... The ACCC Product Safety is concerned that 26,197 vehicles in NSW are yet to be repaired, including 1509 in Newcastle and Maitland so please check ASAP! If you have one of these fitted to your vehicle but have not yet had it repaired you will not be able to renew your car registration. You can check if your vehicle is impacted by going to https://ismyairbagsafe.com.au

22.01.2022 From today 22,000 Novocastrians will have their JobKeeper payments slashed by between $300 and $750 a fortnight. Ripping $19.8 million from our local economy every fortnight. I recently met with Young People's Theatre Newcastle, who currently have 12 of their 32 staff on the JobKeeper program it’s keeping them afloat for now. This amazing theatre has been operating in Newcastle for around 50 years, but changes to the JobKeeper program puts their future at risk. ... The Government should be driving economic activity and creating jobs in regional communities like Newcastle, not pulling the rug out from underneath us. It is absolute madness for the government to be slashing household incomes in the midst of the deepest recession Australia has faced in over a century. You can read more here: https://www.newcastleherald.com.au//youth-theatre-on-edg/

22.01.2022 In the last 30 years, the number of Australian-flagged vessels has drastically dropped from 100 to 13. Vice-Admiral Tim Barrett, a retired senior officer in the Royal Australian Navy and former Chief of Navy rightly noted yesterday that Australia’s virtually non-existent merchant fleet poses a huge risk for national-security. Australia now relies on foreign flagged vessels to carry 99% of our imports including crucial supplies including medicines, aviation fuel, diesel and c...rude oil as well as other vital supplies. The Morrison Government has done nothing to prevent Australia’s dependence on foreign-flagged vessels, which has decimated Australian seafaring jobs and put our economic sovereignty is at risk. Scott Morrison must act now to expand Australia’s maritime sector, ensure secure jobs for Australian seafarers and protect our national and economic security. #SaveAustralianShipping Maritime Union of Australia - Newcastle Branch Hunter Workers

20.01.2022 Popped into Saint Lukes Op Shop Wallsend to purchase some very colourful handmade facemasks before heading back to Parliament. The Opshop was recently able to install a new reverse cycle air conditioner to keep the volunteers cool during the hot summer months and warm throughout winter thanks to a $1,920 Volunteer Program Grant I was able to provide. Sarah and the other volunteers are at the Opshop 9am-1pm Mondays and Fridays so if you’re in the Wallsend area, go check it o...ut! #SupportLocal

19.01.2022 Hats off to the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle for their strong leadership on same-sex marriage and support of the LGBTIQA+ community. Bishop Peter Stewart and Dean Katherine Bower have led the charge to deliver justice for everyone in their congregations and communities. Thank you for your compassion - and your willingness to stand up and be counted. It means a lot not only to our LGBTIQA+ community, but our nation as a whole.... 19.01.2022 Transgender people, including gender diverse and non-binary people, are, and have always been, part of our communities. I pledge to recognise the equality of all genders. I pledge to improve our places so that they are equal. I pledge to use correct pronouns, have gender neutral forms, and gender neutral bathrooms. If I don’t have lived experience, I pledge to speak not for, but with those who do. I pledge to make our places better, and safer, for people of all genders. I am proud to Have taken the TRANSform Newy pledge by Hunter Gender Alliance because discrimination hurts us all. If you’re looking for a gender neutral bathroom or safe-space that supports trans and gender-diverse people in our community you can check out their map here: https://www.huntergenderalliance.org/places

18.01.2022 Many social services, emergency services, local business and even The University of Newcastle, Australia and City of Newcastle have been impacted by Facebook’s changes today. Yesterday the Morrison Government declared victory over the digital tech companies. Today they are scrambling to fix this mess of their own making.

18.01.2022 Social media has given us so much but it has also created fertile ground for some serious threats to flourish: threats to individuals, threats to communities and, indeed, threats to the very fabric of democratic systems like ours. The Morrison government talks a lot about online safety, but the legislation still doesn’t exist. We need to do more. That is why I’m pleased to be launching a bipartisan group of the Parliamentary Friends of Making Social Media Safe.

17.01.2022 Ahoy there, it’s World Maritime Day! This year’s theme is Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet International shipping accounts for more than 80% of global trade including vital medical supplied, food and other basic goods. ... Newcastle has the largest shipping port on the East Coast of Australia. We are a proud maritime city, with a highly skilled workforce. Massive thanks to the seafarers, dockers, ferry and port workers who have kept global supply chains operating throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Thinking also of the hundreds of thousands seafarers who have been unable to return home to their families due to the crisis. 16.01.2022 Check out this fabulous shirt Newcastle Pride Inc has put together. The annual Pride Fest couldn’t go ahead this year due to health restrictions but you can still support them by jumping on the website and grabbing yourself one of these fantastic Quarantini T-shirts!

15.01.2022 Today is Federal Budget Day. This budget should support projects that would drive growth, create jobs and deliver longstanding community benefits.

13.01.2022 Labor has been calling for a National Integrity Commission for years but the Liberal Government keeps dragging their feet and it’s becoming increasingly clear why. Without a National Integrity Commission, there may never be any consequences for this shameful misuse of public money.

13.01.2022 Now THAT’S a shed! Elermore Vale Men's Shed is about to undertake a full electrical fit-out which I was pleased to be able to contribute $10,030 towards via a Stronger Communities Grant. 06.01.2022 December is here and that means it’s time for my much anticipated advent countdown to announce the winner of the 2020 Christmas Card Competition. This year due to Covid-19 I was unable to run my usual drawing competition with school students - instead it was replaced by a photography competition open to all Novocastrians. I hope you enjoy the images as much as I did - make sure to keep an eye out for winner announced on Christmas Day!... To kick us off on the first day of December, here’s a stunning submission of Merewether Ocean Baths snapped by 23 year old Jess Munro of Hamilton South look at those colours! 06.01.2022 The 2020 Newcastle Volunteer Service Awards looked a little bit different this year due to COVID-19 health restrictions, but it was no less amazing. I was honoured to host a virtual presentation ceremony this morning to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary efforts of our local volunteers. We recognised volunteers working in our schools, with our veterans, those in local youth groups and sports organisations, as well as volunteers for the arts, historical societies and a... wide range of community services, to name just a few. Special thanks to 11 year old Jasmine Seidel for her powerful speech about the impact volunteering has on the lives of so many in our community. Jasmine is setting an amazing example for us all to follow! Thank you to all of our local volunteers for all that you do your are all very deserving recipients of the 2020 Newcastle Service Volunteer Award!

04.01.2022 The working conditions that we now enjoy are a product of many decades of struggle. Today we reflect on these hard fought victories, pay tribute to those who stood in solidarity, and vow to keep fighting to protect jobs, wages and conditions. This commitment is especially important in the context of COVID-19. With more than one million Australians having lost their jobs, millions of workers continue to make sacrifices everyday for the health and well being of our nation. They have already shouldered their fair share of the costs of the global pandemic. So I'm sending a massive thank-you out to everyone working on this public holiday - you deserve your penalty rates!

03.01.2022 Susan Ryan was the first woman Cabinet Minister in a Federal Labor government. She authored the Hawke government's landmark sex discrimination and affirmative action laws. She literally changed the lives of Australian women forever - and we remain very thankful. A proud feminist, Susan was a founding member of the Women's Electoral Lobby, Australia (WEL) - and never stopped advocating for gender equality. In 2011, she became Australia's first Age Discrimination Commissioner..., turning her attention to improving the lives of older Australians. Susan Ryan remains an inspiration for so many of us - a trailblazer, a fierce advocate for equality and mentor to so many in our movement. Her passing is an enormous loss. It hurts. My heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and sisters everywhere. Susan Ryan opened so many doors for women in politics and now it's our job to keep them open. Vale Susan Ryan

03.01.2022 A big shout out to the The University of Newcastle, Australia and The Wollotuka Institute for hosting this 5th and final lecture in the Looking Ahead Lecture Series for 2020. I was incredibly humbled to join Jeff Amatto, Taylah Gray, and Professor Bob Morgan on the Black Lives Still Matter panel to highlight issues of injustice and inequality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait People in Australia. These discussions are intended to build on the momentum of the #BLM movement, in ...order to make long-lasting, impactful change. The challenge for each and every one of us is: what will you do to progress the fight against systemic racism and its enduring impacts in Australia? If you’re not sure where to start, here’s a few suggestions: Listen and learn about our nation’s history and the impact of discrimination on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples Support Indigenous campaigns for justice Engage with Indigenous media Support Indigenous owned and operated businesses Find out about the Indigenous people in your local area Go to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander events Encourage your workplace, university or community group to do cultural competency, and Support organisations and peak bodies to fight for the rights of Indigenous people. Share your ideas and suggestions in the comments below.

02.01.2022 Today is International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste and this year OzHarvest Newcastle celebrates 10 years in Newcastle, so I caught up with the local manager Andy to discuss their latest programs and initiatives. In 2018 I was able to secure a grant of $4,301 for OzHarvest through the Stronger Communities Program to upgrade the local kitchen, and they have certainly given it a workout! Over the past 10 years, OzHarvest’s local volunteers have rescued over 3,000 ton...nes of food from local food donors and delivered more than 9 million meals to people in need. Andy and all the Newcastle Volunteers have been working overtime during the pandemic to provide emergency food relief to our local community via food hampers and cooked meals. Thank you for all the incredible work you do! OzHarvest

02.01.2022 So many great questions from the students at St Peter's Primary School, Stockton today. Since they couldn’t come and Visit Australian Parliament House this year, I thought that I would take Parliament to them!

02.01.2022 Today is the start of 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women Newcastle. The 2020 theme is Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!, highlighting the need to: Do more to ensure DV services are adequately FUNDED and well resourced.... Make certain that the pandemic RESPONSE addresses the exacerbated risk factors for violence against women and girls. Implement measures to PREVENT domestic and family violence. COLLECT and use information about the global spike in reports of domestic violence this year to improve services and programs for victims of domestic violence. With 45 women killed by violence in Australia in 2020 alone, we need to do better. You can stand with me and say NO to domestic and family violence by joining some of the virtual events and live streams happening over the next 16 days (more details in the comments). #16DaysofActivism2020 #Newcastle16Days #OrangeTheWorld United Nations Gender Research Network, University of Newcastle UN Women

01.01.2022 Our goal is to eliminate HIV transmission in Australia by 2022 but for this to happen we must do more. The rate of HIV diagnosis in First Nations people is double that of our Australian-born non-Indigenous population. We must focus our efforts to bringing that rate down to zero. This World AIDS Day, we reaffirm our commitment to doing all we can to ease the burdens of HIV not only in Australia, but across our region, and in doing so - improve the lives of hundreds of thousa...nds of people. #WAD2020 #WorldAIDSDay

01.01.2022 We all need a home and a good government would make sure all its citizens have a safe, secure roof over their head. That’s the message local housing and homeless services told Jason Clare and I in Newcastle today. As the housing crisis and unemployment rate looks set to worsen, we need better protections for those who rent, to make homes more affordable, accessible and permanent. And we need a strong safety net of social and public housing for people who can’t afford private ...rent. These should be priority issues for all levels of government. Yet recent budgets from the Federal and NSW Liberal governments failed to act - and that’s not OK. We should not be turning women and children fleeing violence away because there’s not enough crisis accommodation or social housing. We can and should do better. Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful discussion today and for highlighting the dire need for action on housing and homelessness in our region. Tim Crakanthorp MP, Cr Peta Winney Baartz, Nova for Women and Children: Homelessness and Domestic Violence Service, Committee for the Hunter, Hunter Tenants' Advice and Advocacy Service, Samaritans, Compass Housing Services, CDAH, City of Newcastle
