25.01.2022 We stand in the flowing river of life and try to cup the water in our hands thinking this will bring us joy and peace. All the while our feet are grounded in the healing earth, the cool waters rush by washing away that which we don’t need and the breeze gently caresses our face. What if it’s not the doing of catching the water that would bring you contentment but instead finding the being of the experience of standing here - feet on ground, body in water, face to the breeze?
24.01.2022 What are sundays for in your house? After working all week it’s always all about prepping for the week ahead here. Today that means trialling a recipe for homeschool group later in the week.... Lamington caramel slice
24.01.2022 This really struck a cord with him, I feel like this a lot and I love the way they talk about it https://theheartysoul.com/woman-without-a-tribe/
23.01.2022 I am so in love with these photos from Social Laura she has really captured my classes so well. I thought you might all like to see a couple of them.
20.01.2022 There are some days (like today when I spend hours setting up the yoga space) that I think working a ‘normal’ job would be so much easier. Go to work - do my job - go home. Not worry about what my house looks like! Then I get to teach a class that I really love (also today ) and I remember why I love what I do. I was sitting in class today looking out over all my zenned put students with the backdrop of our beautiful Bush thinking ‘heck yeah, this is a pretty sweet job’.... Thank you to all the students both new and old who joined me tonight for the first of our January block. I hope you enjoyed the class as much as I did teaching it
17.01.2022 Hey there! It's been a while since I introduced myself so I thought I would pop in and say hi. I have practiced yoga for over 10 years and I have been teaching for almost a year.... It was a long held dream to do my teacher training but I always felt like I wasn't quite enough - skinny enough, strong enough, zen enough. Even during my initial training I felt these things but I persisted because I know that none of us are perfect. I also know that a movement practice can bring so much value to each and every person. My focus in classes is to help my students become aware in an empowered way of your unique movement ability so that they can increase their strength and mobility and find better physical movement and mental clarity. As a Registered Yoga Detour Instructor my classes focus on infusing strength and stability into yoga asana. All classes move at an accessible pace, waking up the body thoughtfully and methodically with the assistance of blocks, straps and dowels. Though these classes may not move as quickly as a flow class, students should come prepared to work hard as they learn about how their bodies are designed to move. Suitable to all levels even the seasoned practitioner will pick up a few tips and tricks in this class. I currently teach in both Toodyay and Gidgegannup and have a selection of classes online as well.
14.01.2022 Functional Yoga and Fitness Classes As a registered Yoga Detour Instructor, I help people to become aware in an empowered way of their unique movement abilities so that they can increase their strength and mobility. This means they can move better physically and reach their specific goals as well as find mental calm and clarity.... I am one of a handful of teacher across Australia that has gone through this type of training to ensure you can experience a form of training that is functional, integrated, and inclusive. If you have felt disempowered or not able to exercise in a way that serves you, I invite you to join us for one of the classes I run in Toodyay: Functional Yoga - an inclusive class where I share creative ways to move that use your individual strengths and abilities. Includes mobility work and yoga sequences. Fitness - a faster-paced class where we integrate traditional fitness activities but focus on breaking them down so you get the best results. Includes boxing and strength training. When? Classes in Toodyay currently run on Tuesday evening, 6:00 pm - Fitness, 7:30 pm - Yoga, and on Wednesday, Yoga - 5:00 pm. In Gidgegannup on Saturday mornings, 8:00 am - Fitness, 9:00 am - Yoga. Weeknight class is a possibility so send me a PM if you are interested in joining us. How much? I have purposefully priced these classes low from $10/ week membership but this is an introductory price and will go up soon so if you have been thinking about joining us jump in now and keep this low rate. Casual members are welcome to join, get in touch for details on casual rates. Plus your first class is free so you have nothing to lose by showing up and giving it a go.
12.01.2022 I am about to release my next block of classes in both Toodyay and Gidgegannup. If you would like to join us for sessions that focus on strength and mobility and invite you to create more awareness of your body and how you can move it in ways that feel good in your daily life get in touch and I will make sure you are on the list. #toodyay #gidgegannup #ToodyayYoga #GidgegannupYoga #AvonValleyFitness
09.01.2022 Toodyay and Gidgegannup Classes start back next week! This 4 week block of classes is designed to create a pause at the beginning of the new year, a place where we can reset and revisit the core foundations of our practice. During our yoga classes in Toodyay we will be exploring the building blocks that define a consistent and meaningful practice.... Our Gidgegannup classes have a more fitness focus where we will delve into core functional fitness sessions in addition to deep stretching techniques. I have cultivated both these classes to be of benefit to brand new students as well as seasoned students who want to create a strong basis for their practice in the New year. 07.01.2022 I’ve been working on my routines over the last month or so and today I had guests over and I realised that it wasn’t a chore to get ready for them. Here are a few things I do that you might find helpful: 1. 20mins speed tidy - every morning the kids and I set the timer and we go around and put as many things away as we can.... 2. I invested in a new robovac, our old one died earlier in the year. For $350 I have saved myself 10 mins at least of vacuuming every day for the life of the vacuum (last one lasted 5 years) 3. I get up an hour earlier and I spend half an hour doing washing - one load on and hung out, one load brought in and one put away. 4. We got bigger bins. Do not underestimate the joy of having not overflowing rubbish plus I no longer nag hubby to empty them! Most importantly - if we have to go out early I let as much slide as I can and I don’t try and make it up the next day! That is the road to discontent my friends!
06.01.2022 When was the last time you went to a class designed around exercise or movement and played? Just did something for the pure joy of seeing if you could or exploring how your body moves? If you are one of my current students the answer is probably quite recently ... I love hearing from my students during class the words ‘that’s interesting’ as they realise something about their body that they didn’t know. Moving better shouldn’t be about punishing ourselves or trying to force ourselves to move or look like someone else. It should be an interesting exploration of what our body can currently do and what the journey might be in the future.
05.01.2022 This is the core of what I teach in my classes. You may find that we get almost to the end of class before we actually do any 'yoga poses'. For me there is far more value in focusing on the exploration and body awareness than on what pretty shape you can make. . .... . . . #followthedetour #movementeducator #moveeveryday #wheatbeltwa #toodyay #gidgegannup See more
04.01.2022 Fitness class was a success this week
04.01.2022 2019 felt like my best year, maybe some of that is the rose coloured outlook of looking back at the past. But I felt so positive and joyful and filled with more clarity that ever before. Late in 2019 I seemed to lose that feeling and I spent most of 2020 searching for it again. I tried so many things, things that had worked before, new strategies... but nothing seemed to help and everything seemed like too much hard work.... Lately though I have been listening to Kristin Neff's book on Self Compassion and it has really resonated with me. I wanted to share it with you in case you feel similar. Our brains are hardwired to have a negativity bias. This means that negative thoughts are given more weight than positive ones. It's simply a biological way to keep us safe as negative information is more likely to be a threat to us. Positive information is useful to our long term survival but nowhere near as urgent. Rick Hanson describes negative thoughts as sticking like velcro in our brain and positive ones like teflon So, if you feel like you struggle to focus on the positive over the negative - it's totally normal, all of us have a negativity bias! Want to know what has been proven to help us with negative thought patterns? Self Compassion and Non Judgmental Awareness. These allow the thoughts to arise and pass on by without too much resistance. Over the next 4 weeks I am teaching in Toodyay and Gidgegannup and as well as exploring the fundamentals of our physical practice I am weaving in an underlying theme of Self Compassion and Non Judgmental Awareness. If you want to join us for the comprehensive deep dive into a practice designed to nourish your body, mind and spirit you have till Monday to enrol in Toodyay's class and Friday for Gidgegannup. 04.01.2022 Let's talk footwear! Specifically kids and thongs. Find the link at the bottom for a barefoot shoe Boxing Day sale. I have been wearing barefoot shoes for a while now and I can't imagine squeezing my feet into a restrictive shoe or something with a heel now. I have 2 pairs of Xero shoes - an enclosed boot and a thong type shoe. I also have a pair of more dress shoes that I have yet to really wear.... My kids have enclosed barefoot shoes (Bobux) but are big fans of thongs (flip flops for those of you playing along in the US) and I found this interesting research on how thongs far in foot development - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3602234/ I believe the footwear we choose is highly beneficial in our body health. It's a passive form of movement and one of the easiest things to change. After all, you can't spend 90 mins a week in one of my classes working on foot mobility and then put on a stiff, restrictive shoe and expect to have good foot health. If you are looking for barefoot shoes Sole Mechanics have their boxing day sale on right now - solemechanics.com.au//bobux-kp-driftwood-open-sandal-caram
04.01.2022 We have so much fun in our fitness classes they are definitely different to the norm. We explore strength and mobility work as well as some stuff that gets your heart rate pumping but with unique and different activities so you never get bored while you are building fitness and strength. Here's a little snapshot of what you can expect if you come to one of my fitness classes.
01.01.2022 It's summer (in case, you weren't aware) and this used to mean a crap load of laying down and feeling like crap for me. You see I have Pyrolles Disorder (a massive zinc and B6 deficiency that has some fun symptoms like fatigue and social anxiety) and usually hot weather is one of the biggest triggers for me. But guess what? This week I have been out in the heat (not crazy heat but still warm) twice for long periods. Walking around Perth Zoo for 3 hours and a delightful visit ...to Souls and Stars Sanctuary today (spot the brumbys below). Both times I haven't come home and needed to collapse - Woo Hoo!! Several years of targeted supplements guided by a Holistic GP, lots of complimentary therapies and strategies plus daily self care strategies and knowing my body well and what it needs. So far, summer has not hit me hard. I made it through these days of activity and was able to come home and do things. Previously I would struggle to even make a cup of tea before collapsing in bed. And the spates of 40+ days we have had so far have not affected me any where near how they used to. I have gone outside and hung out washing and thought 'hmmm it's hot' but didn't feel completely suffocated and drained after 5 minutes. This is massive for me, not having to write off several months of the year where I can't do anything without strategising extreme down time. I am so excited by this development. My message for you? Listen to your body, find the experts who will help you and persist with strategies that feel right in your soul. If they don't feel right try something else but know that sometimes it takes time but baby, it is worth it!
