24.01.2022 On this day 38 years ago Victoria and South Australia experienced what was to be known as the Ash Wednesday bushfires. Our drought stricken landscape combined w...ith ferocious winds, fanned the fires that swept across the state and devastated many communities. Tragically, 75 lives were lost including 14 CFA and three SA Country Fire Service volunteer firefighters. 18.01.2022 Today we mark one year since the start of the devastating bushfires which deeply affected Victorian communities across the state. On 21 November, 2019 the first... ‘code red’ fire danger rating in almost a decade was declared in the Mallee and Northern Country, and dry lightning strikes in East Gippsland that started three fires which grew to a widespread bushfire disaster that burned for months. Today we reflect on the devastation and challenges that followed 21 November and the incredible support from all emergency services who came together to aid the communities impacted by the unprecedented fire season. 17.01.2022 UPDATE. TOMORROW 20TH NOVEMBER AT 1PM-3PM. RICHARD RIORDAN HAS INVITED THE SHODOW MINISTER FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES TO VIEW THE TOWER AND DISCUSS THE SITUATION. ...WE AS A COMMUNITY NEED TO SHOW OUR SUPPORT. What is suggested is that concerned community members line the sides of Mooleric Road. PLEASE OBSERVE CURRENT COVID RESTRICTIONS. PARK SAFELY. Today we have had word that Mt Gellibrand fire tower will not be in use this upcoming fire season and will be decommissioned. This was not a decision from CFA. Taking away Mt Gellibrand fire tower leaves a huge gap and will be a huge loss for CFA as an early detection. There are also fire lookout towers, which form part of an early warning fire system, at Peters Hill, Mt Anakie and Mt Gellibrand Now Decommissioned . Not all towers can see each area and Peters hill can not see passed Mt Gellibrand leaving Hesse, Wingeel and all of District 6 (Colac and beyond) in a black spot area. Bushfire detection methods can be generally grouped into two distinct categories: 1. Volunteer reporting-public reporting (Triple 0), public aircraft, ground based field staff (agency and industry field staff) 2. Operational detection systems: fire towers, aerial patrols, electronic lightning detectors, automatic detection systems. A fire tower can form part of the decision on the outbreak of a fire and is critical to the immediate decision making process involved in initiating suppression. They can tell us how quick it is building, the direction its heading in, any possible homes in the way. All this gets taken into account even before trucks arrive. At this stage there is no plans to replace or repair the tower. So you tell me how you feel about this.

09.01.2022 At 5:15 this morning crews from Shelford, Mt Mercer and Rokewood brigades were paged to a vehicle fire on the Rokewood-Shelford Rd. When crews arrived on scene we discovered a fully involved vehicle. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and remained on scene for about an hour. ... Thanks for the support Mt Mercer and Rokewood and job well done.

06.01.2022 Communities near Lethbridge, Shelford, Bamganie, She Oaks, Maude and surrounds may see and smell smoke from the ignition of the 65ha Boonderoo Nature Conservati...on Reserve planned burn, 7km West of Lethbridge. This planned burn will be ignited tomorrow, 24 February, providing weather conditions and fuel moisture levels remain suitable. The Boonderoo Nature Conservation Reserve is a unique ecosystem. We use fire in this landscape for three outcomes - to control exotic pasture weeds and encourage regeneration of the native Basalt Grassland, to revitalise biodiversity that includes habitat for threatened reptiles such as the Delma impar (striped legless lizard), and to reduce the fuel to prevent intense bushfires. At this time of the year the soil has dried out and is subject to cracking, which provides the perfect refuge for the legless lizard. Traffic management controls will be in place; please follow signs and directions from Forest Fire Management. Under the current public health advice, planned burning is continuing across Victoria. During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we continue to work closely with the Department of Health and Environment Protection Authority to ensure we keep the smoke impacts from planned burning as low as practically possible. Our crews are adhering to appropriate physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure we can safely continue operations across the state. 03.01.2022 Victoria is going to implement the first step towards the new national warning system from today. In support of the new national warning system Victoria will ad...opt the new national icons set from December 2, 2020. The Australian Warning System is a new national approach to information and warnings during five natural disasters - bushfire, flood, extreme heat, cyclones and severe weather. Until now, we have seen variations in how agencies across Australia issue warnings to their communities. The VicEmergency website will be updated with the new iconography on December 2, with the VicEmergency app updated shortly afterwards.

Santa will be visiting Shelford on Wednesday December 23rd at 7:30pm with the help of some of our local firefighters and the big red truck.
