24.01.2022 A great Drawing Wall flashback for you tonight with Shepparton-based and internationally acclaimed illustration artist Mimi Leung who created the 21st Drawing Wall. Shepparton has been happily splashed with Mimi's work a few times since this wall in 2016, and we were also lucky enough to have her take some school holiday workshops somewhere along the way! #SAMOurPastOurFuture 'SAM gave me the opportunity to create one of my first large scale pieces as part of the Drawing Wall... series in 2016. This commission helped me develop my skills and gain invaluable experience in large-scale mural works. With this piece in my portfolio, I felt more confident pitching for and creating similar scale works such as my mural for Tinder Social, Sydney, and Melbourne Art Trams.' More recently, Mimi has created a new Covid-19 inspired work, 'What We Did As The World Fell Apart', supported by the City of Melbourne Covid-19 Arts Grant. 23.01.2022 Tony Tuckson for Tuesday Treasures! What a Tongue Twister! This month we're sharing the SAM team's favourites from our collection, starting with @rebecca_coates, SAM's Artistic Director/CEO. 'A director doesn't really have a favourite, but if I had to say just one (for today), it would be our work by Tony Tuckson. For the fact that he was one of the early art professionals at @artgalleryofnsw who managed to combine his work at the gallery with a rigorous art practice, litt...le known at the time. For the fact that his strong form and abstracted language took inspiration from Australian Indigenous Art and artists. For the fact that the work was not uncontroversial in a small regional Victorian town of Shepparton, with two previous SAM directors almost hounded out of town for their championing of this new form of 'abstract' painting. And lastly, for its infinite tension and repose, which ensures its memory trace remains long after the act of viewing has ended - in the way that great art does.' Image: Tony Tuckson, Untitled, n.d. 23.01.2022 This work by Maggie May is a favourite for our Visual Arts Educator, Linda Bryan, and this week's pick as our #TuesdayTreasure. 'I can’t walk past Maggie May’s sculptural clay form, Marisol - Marisombra (Sea and Sun, Sea and Shadow) without stopping and looking closer. When I show students this on a virtual tour I am able to zoom (literally) into the amazing detail which reminds me of gentle foaming waves on my favourite beach. The natural textures and lace-like patterns con...trast and appear to combine the idea of strength and fragility, which has been my experience with 2020 so far! This is an amazing legacy to leave by an inspiring Australian artist who is no longer with us. It reminds me that fragile can be beautiful and it’s good to strive to see the best in all of life’s experiences.' Image: Maggie May, Marisol - Marisombra (Sea and Sun, Sea and Shadow), 1980 soft porcelain, earthenware and fire clay body with coloured clay additions. 22.01.2022 Who remembers Yasmin Smith, shortlisted artist of the 2017 Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award? An incredible exhibition of work which was also specially acquired for the SAM Collection. #SAMOurPastOurFuture 'Being a finalist in the 2017 SMFACA was a turning point in my career and an incredible experience of artistic growth, an opportunity to expand my networks nationally and an achievement which has propelled my ongoing ceramic practice to new heights. For my work at S...AM, I created a new ceramic installation including 3 types of ash-glazes and forms derived from different plants from the Shepparton area. I made new relationships with artists, art workers and curators which will continue to endure and help me to foster future artistic endeavours. I was able to run a workshop with the local community, opening up contemporary ceramic practice to a wide audience in a hands-on way. The SMFACA was a life changing opportunity for me. Im so thrilled to have being a part of it.' #SMFACA #australianceramics #ceramicartist @yasminhelenasmith Images: Yasmin Smith, Open Vase Central Leader Widow Maker, 2017, installation view, Shepparton Art Museum. 169 slip cast ceramic objects with 3 types of wood ash glaze, corrugated iron and canvas tarpaulin. 21.01.2022 What does Ramesh have to say about SAM and our purpose? #SAMOurPastOurFuture ‘Despite the ubiquity of clay; ceramics and contemporaneity are terms seldom placed together. Yet this material traverses times and regions! As artists, ceramics can be harnessed to comment upon how we live, work, think and feel. SAM’s SMFACA is an unparalleled initiative, supporting contemporary, ceramics-based practice. It presents opportunities for artists to think deeply about the material and d...evelop a new body of work. The context of SAM; a regional museum whose collection focus is ceramics is a rich setting to test ideas.’ In 2015, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran received SAM’s Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award, Australia’s richest and premier award for artists working in the medium of ceramics. Since then, he's exhibited at various spaces and contexts including the 2018 Dhaka Art Summit, the encounters section for Art Basel Hong Kong, The 2016 Kuandu Biennale, Taipei, the 2016 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art and The National: New Australian Art 2017. Ramesh has also presented solo exhibitions at the National Gallery of Australia and The Ian Potter Museum of Art.

20.01.2022 Time to 'showcase' our current Showcase artist, Irene Grishin Selzer. Irene is an Australian artist, based in Melbourne, who works predominantly with ceramics. Her art practice engages with the notion of transience in nature, the shape of time and the sense of place. All of the natural world is seen as being in a state of flux with transformation and regeneration over the passage of time with all its internal rhythms and patterns, and this contrasted with a spiritual constant.... Now that the SAM shop is open from 10am to 4pm on weekdays, come on in for a browse of our beautiful pieces, and view Irene Grishin Selzer's Showcase #26. All of Irene's works are available for purchase too. This SAM Showcase is presented in partnership with @pepiteshop, a Melbourne based curated collection of contemporary art and design objects by emerging artists, showcased online and by appointment in the Melbourne showroom. #SAMshowcase #SAM_Shepparton #australianceramics @pepiteshop @irenegrishinselzer Image: Irene Grishin Selzer, Mud Cocoons, 2020.

20.01.2022 Good news VCE students! Applications have been extended for FRESH: GV Top Art + Design to Tuesday 8 December. If you haven't had a chance to apply, you still can! And if you need more inspiration, this week's #SAMOurPastOurFuture contribution comes from Abram Rasmussen himself, the former student who we've used to promote the FRESH exhibition so far! "When I think of SAM, I think of showcasing in the 2016 VCE exhibition. I remember being 1 of the winners of the people's cho...ice award as well. This was a big step in the start to my career and creative journey. I knew that I wanted to do something creative with my life and as a career, the VCE exhibition was one of the first moments that I realised I can actually make this a career! It helped me to realise that people enjoyed what I was doing and that I am able to produce things of value that people care about. This gave me the confidence to pursue a career as a "creative". So fast forward to now - I run a successful photography/videography business (Abram Rasmussen Photography) creating all sorts of things for different brands and businesses over the past few years. I am also about to start a full time position at a local marketing agency as their creative director. So, SAM and particularly the VCE exhibition gave me the confidence to pursue what I was passionate about and now I am able to do what I love and provide for my family - which I may not have thought possible otherwise." For more information and to apply for FRESH, visit SAM's website www.sheppartonartmuseum.com.au. Image 1: Courtesy Abram Rasmussen. 17.01.2022 Today's Tuesday Treasure, by Vernon Ah Kee, was chosen by SAM curator Lara Merrington as her favourite collection piece to share with you all. Lara Says: This piece is bold in message and haunting in appearance. The poetry in bringing these two elements together in such minimal simplicity is arresting.... "Ah Kee is a member of the influential proppaNOW collective of urban-based Indigenous artists who disavow ‘traditional’ Indigenous art practices despite retaining strong cultural identification. This work is thus a major example of a new paradigm of Indigenous art that responds to the perceived romanticisation and overdetermination of Indigenous cultural ‘authenticity’ that accompanied the wide popularisation of Aboriginal art (and particularly Western Desert painting) of the past forty years. In response to this history, here Ah Kee uses charcoal hatching to generate an ambiguous subject in a moment of both emergence and erasure from the canvas, providing a confronting yet empathic counter-image of contemporary Indigenous experience." 16.01.2022 Rhiannon Burbridge is a local resident of Greater Shepparton and we've enjoyed watching her girls learn and make art at SAM from a wee little age! #SAMOurPastOurFuture 'I remember many enjoyable school trips to the Shepparton Art Gallery in my high school years. We have often taken interstate and international guests to visit SAM and they have always been impressed with the collections on display. My 2 daughters (aged 3 and 5) have enjoyed many activities that SAM has hosted... over the past few years such as SAM little hands and school holiday workshops. One memory of SAM that stands out is the six-week pottery course I completed earlier this year which I absolutely loved and I am looking forward to taking part in another one when it becomes available. On our visits to the lake, my family and I have loved watching the new SAM building go up and anticipate what it will be like once complete. We are all looking forward to SAM being a place we visit often and enjoy for many years to come!' What are you looking forward to enjoying at the new SAM in 2021? 13.01.2022 Shepparton's Jamie Lea is one of our region's biggest supporters of the arts, and so of course the perfect person for her job as the @sheppartonfestival Creative Director, even though it's been a tough start. "My first year as Creative Director of Shepparton Festival has been a whirlwind. As 2020 has unfolded, bringing with it the twists and turns of COVID, the pandemic has left little room for moments outside of the panic. The Friends of SAM launch however, its carefully cu...rated pieces, forged from the creative heart of our region managed to transcend. Uncertainty gave pause for pride as I stood amongst my fellow creatives and reflected on all that we have accomplished. SAM and SheppFest go hand in hand, arts and culture is what we live and breath. I eagerly await the new SAM building and the special moments it will facilitate, not just for me, but for the community it so dutifully serves." We can't wait too, Jamie! @jaymeelea Do you want to be part of the SAM storytelling? Have something interesting to share? DM us with some pics of you and your SAM #SAMOutPastOurFuture

13.01.2022 Continuing our reflection on family and connection, we couldn't go past the work of Western-Australian-based artist, Julie Dowling. With four Dowling works now in the SAM Collection, kindly donated by Carillo Gantner, 'Everlasting Nana' sings the song of appreciation for our elders and their importance in building our family's connection. @dr.juliedowling wrote in an Instagram post on 25 April 2020:... 'This is a painting of my grandmother Mary Dowling (née Latham) RIP. My Nana used to have a purple bathrobe that she loved to wear because I made it for her myself. She used to sing songs to me and some were very ancient when she was happy. I painted her walking through everlastings because she was born in her home country in a field of everything flowers. Around her head are the colours of the rainbow with thousands of footprints symbolising her ancestors, children and extended family.' Julie Dowling was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1969 with Aboriginal, Irish and Scottish heritage. Dowling belongs to the Badimia language group and the Yamatji people whose traditional country extends across the South-West of Western Australia. She grew up on the outer edge of Perth, close to the bush in a large, extended Roman Catholic family. >> Swipe to see a beautiful inscription by Dowling that our photographer Steph captured for us to share you with all. 10.01.2022 Naturally, our staff that work with the Collection grow fond of certain pieces, so for November's Tuesday Treasures we asked the SAM team to share their favourites. Here's SAM Collections Manager Claire Liersch's pick: 'My favourite works from the collection are from Jenny Orchard's The Imagined Possibility of Unity which won the 2017 Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award. Jenny’s strange figurative sculptures are truly fantastical and transport viewers into another realm. When I originally saw the creatures, they tugged at a memory of mine and eventually I realised they reminded me of characters from the 1990s ABC children’s television show Lift Off which I loved (and was equally scared by) as a child. These magical creations from Orchard’s imagination are similarly intriguing and bewitching.'

07.01.2022 This week’s Tuesday Treasure signifies another wonderful story of family - the legacy of knowledge, stories, and values we hold dear. Tanya Flower’s work was acquired through the 2014 Indigenous Ceramic Art Award. Tanya’s artist statement for the work said: The theme throughout all my works relates to the stories of my Grandmother and my Great Grandmother, Rosie Biddle/Thomas. Aunty Deb told us children of Nan’s totems the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo. I remember as a ch...ild mum driving us all (Nan, Aunties Deb, Ingy, Yvonne and my sisters Sheryl and Lee-Anne) to the strand to sit and watch these cockie’s demolish the beach almond while we ate our hot chips. On one particular day, Nan showed us kids we could also eat the beach almond the cockie’s were eating and proceeded to open it up. The outside of the beach almond is similar to that of a coconut. You reach the inner and you need a rock to crack it open. I also remember it seemed to be a family of five that we watched in the beach almond tree’s down on the strand. During my life I grew up in a house with all my family at different times and remember there always being Nan, Mum and my Aunties. I can say these women mean the world to me and they helped raise me, as well as my Mum and Dad and Uncles. My artwork is called Rosie’s Girls in recognition of the stories I heard from my family regarding my Great Grandmother: of her true courage, strength and a quiet determination about her, this left me feeling a great sense of pride, as back in their day it was really tough living and nobody complained much back then either. I see these attributes in my Grandmother, Mother and Aunties. I have named the small individual five artworks Strength, Beauty, Grace, Free Spirit and Wild. From birth to now I look to these strong, proud beautiful women for support, love and guidance. They have always been there for me no matter what and will be there for my children sharing stories and giving them endless amounts of support and love. It is these wonderful qualities from my family that I want to be passed on. I know that this will keep theirs spirits alive in our children and their children for generations to come. Since graduating from Notre Dame College and exhibiting my work at SAM, I have gone on to complete a BA of Visual Art, Photography at the Victorian College of the Arts (University of Melbourne) and today work as a freelance ...photographer based in Melbourne. Growing up in the Shepparton community, I have fond first memories of visiting SAM on interactive school excursions and greatly appreciated having access to such a space from an early age. My first experience exhibiting with SAM was for their ‘VCE: The art room highlights’ show in 2013, which was such a positive and beneficial introduction to my artistic journey. Having my work circulate through newspapers as the featured marketing image, alongside the museum support, community support and feedback surrounding me, ultimately gave me the aspiration and confidence to pursue my art further. My exhibited work dabbled with themes of coming of age and symbols close to my family heritage, and whilst stylistically being very different from my work today, my love affair with my Mediterranean roots and curiosity in the ways culture, generational growth and tradition is embedded in place is still a connecting thread. I am incredibly proud and excited for the expansion of SAM as it is so important for rural communities to have access to a contemporary artistic space. I believe it’s going to bring such a strong and charismatic presence to the GV and I can’t wait to watch it thrive!" @patricia_sofra #SAM_shepparton #SAMFRESH #artstudent #inspiration #studentinspiration #photographerjourney

03.01.2022 To mark the 10th anniversary of Woman and Child in our collection this week, we've asked the very humble artist Sam Jinks to tell us about his first memories of SAM. "I first visited SAM in 2010 to install Woman and Child when it was first shown. My wife, son and I made the drive up from Melbourne and spent the day arranging the drapery, hair and lights, so that everything was perfect. My son really liked the cow sculptures on the lawn in front of the gallery! Following on f...rom that, former director Kirsten Paisley got in touch to say that SAM had enjoyed record visitor numbers, and the Shepparton community felt so strongly connected to Woman and Child that a large fundraiser was planned to purchase the work for SAM. My solo show at SAM in 2012 was a great survey of my works to that point, including sketches and studio photos, which I don’t often show. Over the years I have kept in touch with Kirsten and former curator Danny Lacy, who have shown my work at the NGA in Canberra and also Mornington Regional Gallery. I’ve always felt so supported by SAM and the wider Shepparton community, and I really look forward to furthering these bonds at the new SAM." #SAMOurPastOurFuture #SAM_shepparton #visitshepparton @visitshepparton #womanandchild #hyperrealism #sculptureart #samjinks Images: 1.
