22.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Donnybrook? Your State Library is featuring WA regional towns on its Facebook Page. It's an opportunity to share st...ories, old photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Denham, Meckering, Wyalkatchem, Nannup and Newdegate. The town of Donnybrook is situated 210 kilometres south of Perth. The traditional owners are the Noongar Aboriginal people, who have been in the area for thousands of years. Donnybrook was named by European settlers after a suburb in Ireland in 1842. The town was gazetted in 1894. Originally a timber mill settlement on the banks of the Preston River, gold was discovered nearby in 1897. For a short time Donnybrook became the scene of a small gold rush, which attracted over 200 gold miners. With no more gold to be found, disappointed miners turned their skills to growing fruit. In 1900 the first Granny Smith apple was planted. Today Donnybrook is at the heart of apple production in Western Australia. Other industries include timber, beef, dairy, viticulture, olives and avocados. The annual Donnybrook Apple Festival established in 1954, celebrates 'the apple' and is popular with locals and tourists. It includes agricultural displays, a sideshow alley, fireworks and a street parade. Donnybrook is also home to Australia’s largest known English Oak planted in 1893. As well as gracious heritage buildings built from local sandstone and even an Apple Fun Park. Not surprisingly given the beauty of the town, the abundance of culinary delights and friendly country hospitality, Donnybrook has become a popular tourist destination. Visitors can enjoy walk and bike trails taking in the flora, fauna and history of the town. There is an Indigenous Walk Trail created with the local Aboriginal community which among other stories, shares the Dreamtime story of the creation of what we now call the Preston River. 16.01.2022 A reminder that from 12.01am Saturday 14 November, WA will transition to a controlled interstate border. Here are some of the measures in place to keep our comm...unity safe: Every traveller will need to complete a registration and declaration using G2G PASS to enter WA. Each G2G PASS will be scanned by an authorised officer upon arrival. Every traveller will undergo a health screening upon arrival at Perth Airport. Anyone who has been in either VIC or NSW or who has knowingly come into contact with someone from VIC or NSW in the 14 days prior to entering WA will be required to quarantine for 14 days. Our safe and cautious approach may mean it takes extra time to clear Perth Airport. Travellers are advised to prepare for domestic travel as you would for an international flight. It is vital you do not travel if you are unwell. It is important we all work together to keep WA safe and strong.

12.01.2022 Have you got a moment to complete the Shire of Donnybrook Balingup - Volunteering in our Shire survey? There is a strong culture of volunteering in the Shire of Donnybrook Balingup, which is defined by Volunteering Australia as "...time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain." Volunteering is about the opportunity to become an active member of your community while helping others and yourself. People volunteer for many different reasons. To meet new ...people, learn new skills, build their CV, help other people, make good use of their time, take on new challenges, or use their skills and experience in a positive way. Volunteers turn up in all sorts of locations: in local communities, in professional organisations associated with a profession, and/or through an employer through corporate giving programs. The purpose of this survey is to understand how and why people already volunteer in our Shire, to identify those who are new to volunteering, or for existing volunteers finding areas where you may have more time and skills to give. The Shire of Donnybrook Balingup, Donnybrook Community Resource Centre, Donnybrook Community Home Care and Volunteer South West are forming a volunteering partnership to better assist volunteers in our community. The information you provide in this survey will be assessed by these partners to help build an effective volunteering strategy in our Shire.
