24.01.2022 WELCOME TO DR DAPO The Shire of Gingin is pleased to announce to the community that it has successfully negotiated the services of Dr Oladapo Alegbe (Dr Dapo) to take on the Gingin Medical Practice. Cr Kim Rule, the Chairman of the Medical Centre Committee, feels this is a terrific result. Dr Dapo brings a great deal of experience to the practice, he remarked. The Committee and I hope that the community will be very welcoming of Dr Dapo who brings over 20 years of genera...l practice proficiency to Gingin. Additionally, Dr Dapo will be providing extended hours to the practice and it will remain open to everyone. I’d like to thank the community on behalf of the Committee and the Shire for their patience over the past few months. I’d also like to encourage community members to come in and make themselves known to Dr Dapo who is really looking forward to meeting the community. Dr Dapo has had vast exposure to country service delivery over the past 15 years and he also has extensive experience in chronic disease management, mental health care, child health, women’s health, men’s health, geriatric skin care, skin cancer management, simple surgeries, emergency and acute care management, etc. Dr Dapo hails from Nigeria and has been working in Australia predominantly in Queensland and Western Australia since 2010. 19.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS TO NIKKI WOODS Gingin’s Nikki Woods was announced yesterday as one of this year's Resilient Australia WA award winners. Now in its 21st year, the awards celebrate projects that build community resilience and support residents to get back on their feet after disasters such as fires, floods and cyclones. They aim to inspire innovation, collaboration and community engagement among individuals, community groups, schools and organisations. ... If anyone around the Shire of Gingin has met Nikki then they’d know that one of her primary passions is serving the community as the Captain of the Gingin Fire & Rescue Service. One of her other passions though, is undoubtedly photography. When COVID-19 began to affect the Gingin community in March 2020 with social distancing measures, Nikki put forth an invitation to the community for a free photography shoot of you and your family in your driveway. Known as The Driveway Project, the idea was for families to have some fun even whilst in the middle of social distancing. Nikki took inspiration from talented Darwin photographer, Francesca Fuga Photography, who started a similar project and was herself inspired by another photographer overseas. Nikki’s photography project which captured Gingin community members during the COVID-19 pandemic, was selected as the People's Choice Photography winner. Nikki was also selected as one of 3 finalists in the national Resilient Australia Awards to be announced next month. The Shire would like to congratulate Nikki on being the recipient of this prestigious award. Many laughs and smiles were brought about during the Pandemic because of this project (which the Shire also participated in) and it is a wonderful example of community spirit in times of hardship. Council and staff wish Nikki the best of luck at the national awards next month and congratulations again for winning the People’s Choice category for the Resilient Australia WA Awards. 15.01.2022 REMEMBRANCE DAY 2020 A small service was held at 11am this morning in Gingin to commemorate Remembrance Day. Other services were also held throughout the Shire's many communities this morning. Remembrance Day was originally known as Armistice Day and began in 1919 to remember all those who had fought and died in World War I. We mark the time of 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month because it was the time, day and month in 1918 that the guns finally fell silent on the Weste...rn Front after four years on continuous warfare. The 1 minute of silence that we all observe today originally began life as 2 minutes and was proposed by Australian journalist Edward Honey, who was working in Fleet Street. At about the same time, a South African statesman made a similar proposal to the British Cabinet, which endorsed it. King George V personally requested all the people of the British Empire to suspend normal activities for two minutes on the hour of the armistice "which stayed the worldwide carnage of the four preceding years and marked the victory of Right and Freedom". 2020 has been a tumultuous year for all but in this moment, we will pause to remember all those who have died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts. Lest we forget.

14.01.2022 PROPOSED CHANGE FOR COUNCIL MEETING PROCEDURES The Shire of Gingin has published a public notice (as required under the Local Government Act 1995) to amend its meeting procedures. The proposed change is to remove Deputations/Presentations from the Order of Business for Council meetings. Instead, Deputations and Presentations will take place prior to the start of the Council Meeting. The reason for this proposed change is primarily to allow Council meetings to proceed more ...promptly to the actual business of the meeting, which will benefit members of the public attending the meeting with an interest in a specific item. The only change proposed to Deputations and Presentations is the timing. Members of the public will still be able to book a Deputation to address Council on any matter of concern or to attend and listen to Deputations if they wish to. All other arrangements will remain the same. The proposed change is an amendment to the Shire’s Meeting Procedures Local Law. The Local Government Act 1995 requires that any amendment to a local law must first be advertised for public submissions before a final decision is made and this is the process that is currently underway. If community members wish to comment on this change then they can make a public submission to the Shire by 4.00pm on Monday, 25 January 2021. Hard copy submissions may be posted or hand delivered and should be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Shire of Gingin, 7 Brockman Street, Gingin WA 6503. Submissions may also be emailed to [email protected]. The proposal will then go back to Council at its February 2021 meeting, at which time Council must consider all submissions received and make a final decision as to whether it wishes to amend the local law or not. A copy of the public notice can be viewed in full on the Shire's website - www.gingin.wa.gov.au/council/public-notices.aspx All enquiries should be directed to the Chief Executive Officer via email to [email protected].

12.01.2022 GINGIN & LANCELIN TRIATHLONS Last year the Shire reported a brand new line up of events for 2021 for our Summer Suite of Events program. In relation to the Triathlons held in Gingin and Lancelin, they will both now take place on a biennial basis. What this means is that going forwards the Shire will run 1 x triathlon per year in either Gingin or Lancelin. ... For this year Gingin will hold a Triathlon (Gingin Biennial Triathlon) given that last year's was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. No triathlon will be held in Lancelin this year so consequently in 2022 the triathlon will therefore take place in Lancelin. However, in the year that either town is not hosting the event, an alternate event will take place instead which is consequently why Lancelin will host an Arts Festival in April 2021. The Gingin event planned for 2022 will be the Gingin Sesquicentenary which will actually take place on 9 October 2021. This means that no additional event or a triathlon will be held in Gingin in 2022. Queries about the triathlons and other Shire events may be directed to the Shire's Events team via [email protected] / (08) 9575 5162.

07.01.2022 SEDIMENT TO BE REMOVED FROM GINGIN BROOK With the draining of Gingin Brook in order to examine the Weir structure, it is an excellent opportunity for the Shire to clear out the sediment from the Brook whilst the water is low. Today Depot staff have been working in Granville Park to remove several tree stumps and lower limbs from existing trees to allow access for heavy machinery to enter to remove the sediment from the Brook. This process of sediment removal will occur fr...om Friday into the weekend. All care will be taken to ensure that there is minimal environmental impact to the area. Once all works have been undertaken, the area will be returned to its usual state until such time as the new weir is ready to be installed. ENQUIRIES Contact Renier De Beer, Coordinator Assets/Projects, on (08) 9575 5149.

06.01.2022 REVIEW OF WEIR/POOL DRAINING OF GINGIN BROOK The community may have noticed some activity recently around the Weir/Pool in Granville Park. The Shire is currently in the process of draining the brook in order to undertake a required assessment of the structural integrity of the concrete basin, walls and other accompanying structures, as well as to review the environmental aspects surrounding the water flowing through the brook. This will also include sediment assessments ...and water testing. All of the information gathered from this assessment will be utilised to design the replacement weir structure that is better suited for safety and environmental impact as the current structure is significantly aged. The Shire has engaged an engineering consultant to undertake this review with the brook being drained over the next week to allow the consultants the best opportunity to view all of the structural components, as well as to undertake a survey of the area. All care will be taken to ensure that there is minimal environmental impact to the area and once the assessment has been undertaken, the area will be returned to its usual state until such time as the new weir is ready to be installed. ENQUIRIES Contact Renier De Beer, Coordinator Assets/Projects, on (08) 9575 5149.

02.01.2022 REMEMBRANCE DAY - 11 NOVEMBER 2020 #LestWeForget "On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the forefront of the allied advance to victory. Beginning with their stunning success at the battle of Hamel in July,... they helped to turn the tide of the war at Amiens in August, followed by the capture of Mont St Quentin and Pèronne, and the breaching of German defences at the Hindenburg Line in September. By early October the exhausted Australians were withdrawn from battle. They had achieved a fighting reputation out of proportion to their numbers, but victory had come at a heavy cost. They suffered almost 48,000 casualties during 1918, including more than 12,000 dead. In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the postwar decades. Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts."
