21.01.2022 New books @ the library #thebinding #bridgetcollins The Binding by Bridget Collins 'Books are dangerous things in Collins's alternate universe, a place vaguel...y reminiscent of 19th-century England. It's a world in which people visit book binders to rid themselves of painful or treacherous memories. Once their stories have been told and are bound between the pages of a book, the slate is wiped clean and their memories lose the power to hurt or haunt them.' See more

04.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Gnowangerup? Your State Library is featuring WA regional towns on its Facebook Page. It's an opportunity to share s...tories, old photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Busselton, Mandurah, Wittenoom, Kalgoorlie and Rockingham... Gnowangerup is located 355 south east of Perth in the Great Southern. The name means "place where the mallee hen nests" in the language of the area's traditional owners the Goreng Noongar people, who have been in the region for thousands of years. The town was first gazetted in 1908 spelt Ngowangerupp. However it was unpopular among new European settlers and was changed to Gnowangerup a few years later. The Gnowangerup State School opened in November 1908 and the local Agricultural Hall shortly after. A branch railway from Tambellup opened for service to Gnowangerup in 1912 and was extended to Ongerup on 6 January 1913. People came to the Gnowangerup Agricultural Show from far and wide. In 1926 United Aborigines Missionary Brother HW Wright and Sister Hope Wright established an Aboriginal reserve on the outskirts of town. This included a hall, hospital tent and a small school in an area of land granted to them by the State Government. Men received assistance in finding work while women found domestic work in the town. In 1928 the population of the reserve grew dramatically from 100 in 1928 to over 300 people with the closure of the Carrolup Native Settlement. Subsequently the condition of the reserve deteriorated and it was condemned by the Gnowangerup Board of Health. In 1935 the Wrights arranged for the purchase of 61 hectares of land two miles east of the town along the Black Road. This would become the Gnowangerup Mission. A Bible Training Institute opened in Gnowangerup in 1960, the first of its kind for Aboriginal people in Western Australia. It was here that Ron Williams studied to be a pastor and missionary. Ron Williams went on to become one of the best-known and respected Aboriginal leaders in Australia. He was known among Aboriginal people as Kurta kurta everybody’s brother. The State Library has an extensive collection of digitised photographs from the Gnowangerup Bible Training Institute here - https://bit.ly/3m9xueJ. To connect with family and community go to - https://www.slwa.wa.gov.au/explore/indigenous-wa/storylines Today the area around Gnowangerup is used for grain farming and the town is a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling. It also has a small industrial area. The wheatbelt town is close to wildflower reserves, the beautiful Stirling Ranges National Park and small local museums. 02.01.2022 Mandatory contact registers in WA To keep all Western Australians safe, particular businesses and venues must maintain a contact register of patrons, staff, visitors and contractors for COVID-19 contact tracing, if required. Particular businesses are: *food and licensed venues (restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs, taverns, nightclubs)... *gyms, indoor sporting centres and pools *places of worship, and funeral parlours *beauty and personal care services including hairdressers and barbers *galleries and museums *cinemas, theatres and other entertainment venues *auction houses and real estate inspections *community facilities, libraries and halls *zoos and amusement parks *function centres *accommodation facilities that already have check-in arrangements in place (for example, hostels, hotels, large camp grounds). Details required are location, date, name, telephone number and arrival time. Email addresses are optional. You must: *keep contact details for 28 days *store the information confidentially and securely. *You have the right to deny entry to anyone who refuses to provide their contact information. Keeping a contact register: To help businesses and venues, the WA Government has developed the SafeWA app. This is a free system that uses QR codes to register attendance. It's quick, convenient, easy to use and contactless. It's not mandatory to use SafeWA, but it is encouraged. SafeWA can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Alternative contact register formats are available, including recording details electronically or on paper. A template is available on our Toolkit page. Businesses must still maintain a written contact register for people who choose not to use the SafeWA app. How does SafeWA work? The SafeWA app sends accurate customer information directly to WA Health, meaning data does not have to be stored by your business and is readily available for WA Health to access if it becomes necessary. For more information visit the website below: https://www.wa.gov.au//covid-19-coronavirus-contact-regist
