22.01.2022 WEEKEND ROAD TRIP: Westonia is located just over four hours drive (~300km) east of Perth and half an hour from Merredin -straight down the Great Eastern Highway.... It is on the Wheatbelt Way Drive Trail and is where the Goldfields meets the Wheatbelt in the town. Westonia is nestled amongst 4,000 hectares of salmon gum, morrell and gimlet woodland, gold mining is still an important industry in the area with a Gold Mine right next to the townsite although the shire’s primary industry is now wheat and sheep farming. All its streets are named after minerals and the town has preserved a streetscape facade that reflects its Edwardian origins. 14.01.2022 Main Roads are undertaking a significant amount of road and bridge works on the Great Eastern Highway to improve road safety and freight efficiency. Widening w...orks and construction of the overtaking lane between Carrabin and Bodallin will recommence from 1 September 2020 and are due to be completed in November 2020. This will involve several work sites with manned traffic lights during the day. Currently the shoulders are being sealed between Kellerberrin and Walgoolan to ensure a 11m wide seal. The widening works are due to be completed in October 2020. In early 2021, works on Bridge 0629 in Walgoolan will commence. A new bridge will be constructed away from the road and there will be little impact on the highway until the end of the works. Bridge 0630A at Moorine Rock will also be widened at the same time. Works are due to be completed in early 2022. For the safety of road users and road workers, there will be lane closures and speed restrictions. Road users are urged to slow down when approaching worksites, obey all signs and signals and show courtesy to other road users. We understand this will involve delays to travel and we appreciate the patience of road users. 06.01.2022 CHANGES TO THE USE OF SHIRE WATER STANDPIPES Due to the Water Corporations changes to stand pipe water supply charges, there will be changes to the way the Shires standpipes are used and the cost of standpipe water from all Council Controlled Standpipes. The Shire of Westonia currently has nine (9) fixed water standpipes located within the Shire for use by the Shire, for firefighting purposes and the community.
