22.01.2022 All you Need is Love - the words of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. 2020 is a very different Easter for all but all you need is love. We could not be with them but we spoke to our adorable Grandchildren today - so grateful to FT and WhatsApp.

21.01.2022 If you know of anyone who may benefit from counselling please invite them, on my behalf, to contact me. In these uncertain times caused by Covid19 virus many of us will be struggling. Another set of ears in a safe, private, online environment can make the difference between extreme anguish and useful, motivational anxiety.
18.01.2022 You are welcome to leave helpful comments for me so I can improve our experience together.
17.01.2022 Gratitude The word has such a beautiful ring to it don’t you think? The definition of ‘gratitude’ as per Dictionary.com is ‘the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. I believe all of us would like to think we possess these qualities however, I also believe that the words can be used ‘loosely’ by many. Of course most of us would show gratefulness occasionally but when we ‘practice’ gratitude regularly with meaning, then we trul...y can tell ourselves that we are a kind and grateful person. Often we hear others describe someone as ‘grateful and kind’ and that is because their actions, on a regular basis, clearly show these qualities. If you know of someone like this then make them your mentor. Did you know we can teach ourselves these attributes, just as we can teach ourselves to ride a bike? Isn’t that a wonderful thought? That we can become more grateful, more kind, more satisfied, more loving and caring; more of anything. A couple of ways of doing this is by use of prayer and/or meditation. Like anything it does require practice to achieve, rather than a simple snap of the fingers. In my sessions, if clients are open to learning prayer and meditation as a way to improve their health holistically and bring balance to their life, then I coach them. I cannot tell you how joyful it is for me to observe these clients gain confidence, and to learn self respect and self gratitude. In order to be able to show gratefulness we have to first learn self gratitude. Prayer does not mean ‘of a particular religion’ such as Christianity, Buddhism, Islamic. We can develop an individual faith or use our nominated faith to practice prayer, just as we can teach ourselves how to meditate. There is no right or wrong way to do either. If you were to tell me prayer won’t work for you because you have no particular faith or that you have tried meditation but ‘just can’t get it’, I would prove you wrong by showing you how to achieve one or the other or both. Let’s make practicing gratitude a new goal for you and here is a tip. Write affirmations for yourself and repeat to yourself regularly I am grateful for all that I have. Expand on that I am grateful I am healthy, I am grateful I have food to eat, I am grateful I have family and friends to lean on, I am grateful I have a roof over my head, I am grateful I live in Australia, I am grateful my family is well. There are hundreds of things to be grateful for and yes, in Covid 19 times it is so very easy to become bogged down in concern that we cannot see past what we may be losing or have lost, but the trick is to pick everything good about your life and be grateful for that! Happy practicing. Please let me know if this helps you in any way to feel better about yourself and your situation. Shirley Cornish Vital Counselling Online
14.01.2022 DEPRESSION My last post covered the aspects of anxiety, so now onto depression. I always describe anxiety and depression as being two sides of a double edged sword. Both are connected but not the same. While anxiety is a heightened physical response - eg, rapid heart beat, dry mouth, headaches, clenched jaw etc - depression, on the bottom side of the sword, is a low flat affect. It slows us down and can cause- lack of motivation, lack of appetite, ... feelings of hopelessness and/or helplessness, desire to withdraw, inability to get out of bed, lack of concentration - and much more. If ever you have experienced the loss of someone very close to you or experienced divorced then you may have recognised some, or all, of the above symptoms of depression through your grief. This would be quite common. If the above symptoms persist then professional intervention may be necessary. Effective treatment for depression can be a combination of medical intervention and counselling. Never ever be afraid to ask for help. Incredible as it sounds, a stigma is still attached to the diagnosis of depression which, simply put, is asking for help when one is not coping. Why would anyone think they are a failure if they are not coping? We were not born with the ability to get life right always. If we were we would be perfect and not one of us is perfect! It is a myth that he/she who asks for help is weak. In fact it is the exact opposite! The strength comes from acknowledgment of the fact that one is not doing well. Think of it like this. One can only hide behind a superficial wall of normality fo so long before he becomes Jack from Jack and Jill and comes tumbling down. Surely it makes more sense to acknowledge things are not right and seek help before you break your crown I know for a fact that those living with a depressed person see the illness playing out in front of their eyes - often well before the person who is suffering. If one family individual is suffering depression and /or anxiety then this affects the entire household. It is up to the sufferer to ask for help when they know all is not right. The family will thank you, care for you and be there for you. Once more I have to say that the above post is my take on depression coupled with educative experience. If you feel you are not coping as well as you have in the past then please seek intervention before you become Jack.

11.01.2022 Vital Counselling Online re Gratitude
11.01.2022 Welcome to Vital Counselling Online, a new platform to suit new times. Online counselling differs only in that client and counsellor are not physically in the same space. Many of you would remember me from Shirley Cornish Counselling, my face to face practice, from which I retired several years ago. I have decided to return to counselling, in an online format, hoping to assist others who are feeling the anxiety and uncertainty caused by Corona Virus, Covid 19. The major i...ssue with CV19 is its potential to steal our personal control, our choices. Our lives, livelihoods, freedom and future as we knew it on the eve of 2020 are at stake. For the moment CV19 is here and we have to deal with it - but how? We have little knowledge of a disease of this magnitude so our resources are small. The hope that I hang onto is that we come together as couples, families, community and country and use the safety, comfort and love that these unions provide. It is up to us to do all we can individually to stay on top; to remain healthy - mentally physically emotionally and spiritually..... if we are sinking and cannot find a way, then we indeed need to seek help from professionals. Hence the opening of my new online counselling practice.... Please help me by sharing my page and posts. Without you I may not be able to re-establish my practice. Thankyou. See more

07.01.2022 Happy Saturday everyone: two of the greatest survival techniques in uncertain times are gratitude and humility. Lets try practicing them daily. I feel humbled by those of us who selflessly give to those more in need and I am grateful I am Australian, living faraway from other parts of the world during these precarious and uncertain times.
