24.01.2022 Working on child safety in your everyday interactions...

24.01.2022 So, the #toddlerchallenge is doing the rounds at the moment. People are enticing little ones with treats and filming to see if they can wait patiently for the adult to return before they eat the treats. I thought it was important to re-post this from a few years back. https://shonainnespsychology.com.au/wait-should-you-delay-/

23.01.2022 School holidays again. Are you doing some "sneaky work" while your family are enjoying themselves? It can useful to take stock and check in on your reasoning. Perhaps it's especially important when boundaries have been blurred during lockdown? https://www.radicallyopen.net/sneaky-work-strikes-again/

23.01.2022 This time, the uncomfortable conversation is not mine, but it's the sort of uncomfy chat that I think is so very important. This is about talking to girls about porn and sex (so it does have/mention these "adult" concepts). Check it out... with thanks to Project Wild Dad and Our Kids Online https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Av-ritHHw1w&t=4s

21.01.2022 Important update

20.01.2022 We can get slack when a ‘crisis’ lasts a long time. Have you noticed ‘crisis fatigue’ impacting behaviour?

19.01.2022 Do your / did your kids go to dance classes? I’m really keen to hear from you about this one, folks? A recent international summit on preventing childhood exploitation has shared growing concerns about links between the Hypersexualization of children and dance classes. ... Do/ did your kids wear ‘adult’ costumes, dance with ‘adult’ choreography and to ‘adult’ lyrics? Do you know the difference between healthy and harmful dance? What have you noticed about dance classes or the dances your kids are doing on TikTok? Do you/ they share their moves on social media? It’s important you have an awareness so you can share it with your child. A growing number of opinions indicate it could protect them from harm from online pornography groups, other exploitation and unhealthy body image. This trailer comes with trigger warnings and age restrictions (and lots of additional production effects)

19.01.2022 Thanks for taking the time, kids

18.01.2022 Check this out and then consider sharing it with school principals you might know. What do your little ones wear to school? What’s the uniform requirement? Does it limit their choice of activity at free time? https://researchonline.nd.edu.au/health_article/63/

17.01.2022 Tomorrow on ABC Sunshine Coast I’ll be chatting about heading back to school...again. Routines, anxieties, and listening to what your kids might need. Wednesday after 10:15am.

16.01.2022 Oh Hasbro! Having a lens on children’s sexual safety risks could have prevented risk (at worst) and embarrassment/cost (at least) Toy makers, please think about sexual and relationship safety before you produce. Consumers, please think about sexual and relationship safety before you buy. ... https://www.google.com.au//trolls-world-tour-poppy-do/amp/

16.01.2022 This morning, on ABC Sunshine Coast, I’m chatting with Annie again. This time, we’re talking about helping young people who are anxious about storms. Yup. It’s definitely been a stormy start to the new season where I live. A great time to help children speak and learn about scary things.

14.01.2022 Great stuff!!!

14.01.2022 This morning on ABC Sunshine Coast, I’m chatting with Annie about guiding your kids through ‘Crushes’ and all of those intense feelings. Crushes are a great time to learn about relationships and ourselves. How do we help kids learn how much is too much and what to do if the advances of others make you scared or uncomfortable? Tune in after 10:15.

12.01.2022 This is fantastic! Have you spoken with your young people about porn, consent, relationship expectations....???

08.01.2022 How old does a child need to be before they can get in trouble with the Law and be detained? In Australia, it’s 10 years old. Yesterday, I spoke with Annie on ABC Sunshine Coast about the minimum age of criminal responsibility and how the UN has urged Australia (for a number of years now)to #raisetheage. ... Here’s a link to a map that shows how Australia compares to other countries. Take a look! https://home.crin.org//minimum-age-of-criminal-responsibil

06.01.2022 Another goodie from across the ditch.

04.01.2022 Hooray. There’s a fabulous resource to support those with children in the very early years as they begin their online experiences. You can download this booklet from the Office of the eSafety Commissioner. https://www.esafety.gov.au//2020-02/Early-years-booklet.pdf

03.01.2022 When do kids start ‘dating’? How does dating differ from primary school through to the senior years of high school? Whatever the time, it’s always a great time to chat. There are some neat little points in this article.

02.01.2022 How do you feel about vomit? Some children (and grown ups) really fear it and will restrict their lives to avoid any chance of getting sick, talking about vomit, or being near others who may be unwell. This morning, I’m chatting with Annie on ABC Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast about Emetophobia and how mental health professionals can support people to move past this debilitating fear. ... Tune in around 10.20am. See more

01.01.2022 Thanks to my colleague, Naomi, for pointing out this gem. A great clip to share with kids. I’d recommend watching it with them so you can explain some of the words a little more if needed. https://youtu.be/h3nhM9UlJjc
