24.01.2022 World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week (10-16 May 2020) is an opportunity to raise global awareness about a potentially deadly cancer that affects childrens eyes. 90% of Retinoblastoma patients live in low income countries and while survival rates in Australia are nearly 100%, the rate of survival is less than 50% in developing countries. Early detection and treatment of this deadly eye cancer is critical. Sight For All has been training Fellows in partner countries to treat Retinoblastoma patients like Baby Chi, whose life was saved in 2016 after her Retinoblastoma in both eyes was diagnosed early. Watch Baby Chis journey at https://vimeo.com/171170148

23.01.2022 Will you fight to save sight? Throughout the world there are 285 million people who are vision impaired due to eye disease or lack of glasses. Together, we can fight avoidable blindness and restore sight. Together, we can teach the world to see. Go to https://sightforall.org/donate to make a difference.

23.01.2022 Blindness can affect anyone, anywhere, at any age. Recently, Dr Soleaphy, a Sight For All trained Paediatric Ophthalmologist, examined this young baby at Cambodias Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital (KSFH). The mask Dr Soleaphy is wearing conforms with Cambodian COVID requirements to protect hospital staff and patients, whilst providing care to those in need. Of the dedicated team at the hospital, the Director of KSFH Professor Meng and one of our valued supporters said "As health professionals, we stand together, to help all patients. We do not run away from the challenges. Its our professional obligation." Find out more about our work in Cambodia at https://sightforall.org/about/our-partner-countries/cambodia

23.01.2022 Did you know that 75% of people in the most vulnerable countries lack access to clean soap and water- the primary means of infection COVID prevention? It is one of the reasons why COVID is not over for anyone, until its over for everyone. Today, on World Humanitarian Day, Thursday 19 August, our Chairman Dr James Muecke and EO Judy Hatswell, have masked up to show our support for #endCOVIDforall. This is a global movement to encourage our government to provide vital life-saving support to vulnerable nations. Join us, as we stand in solidarity with our global neighbours and sign the petition at www.endcovidforall.com #ECFA #joinus #weneedyou

22.01.2022 Yesterday Sight For All hosted the first in our series of online tutorials for the ophthalmic sub-specialty area of Neuro-Ophthalmology. The informative 2-hour tutorial was presented by our Neuro-Ophthalmology Lead Visionary, Prof John Crompton and was attended by 16 participants from Myanmar, Cambodia, Mongolia and Vietnam. Through these online tutorials we are continuing to teach the world to see!

22.01.2022 During a year that has shone a spotlight on our health care providers like never before, it is appropriate that the World Health Organization designated 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. We salute all of the dedicated and resilient Nurses and Midwives in our partner institutions around the world. Thank you for the incredible contributions you make, each and every day.

22.01.2022 Eye disease due to diabetes is the fastest growing cause of vision loss amongst Aboriginal people. Excessive sugar consumption is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Please make sure you continue to have your regular eye checks to avoid vision loss from this disease. Watch Sid's story at https://youtu.be/CNjoXfIiz-c

22.01.2022 Here's a fun Friday fact! The retina is an essential part of the eye that enables vision and it consists of three types of cones; one is sensitive to the colour red, one is sensitive to the colour blue and the other is sensitive to the colour green. These three cones work together to sense combinations of light waves that help us see millions of other colours and shades.

21.01.2022 Charlie Brown famously said "Keep looking up thats the secret of life." Here are some practical tips on how to stay resilient and positive each and every day, from Dr Muecke.

21.01.2022 Never before has a greater spotlight been placed on our fantastic health care professionals, than this year. Watch 2020 Australian of the Year and our Chairman, Dr James Muecke AM, as he is interviewed by ABC Australia medical reporter Sophie Scott for a vodcast series on supporting doctors in times of increased stress. Produced by Avant Mutual Dr Muecke recounted stories that have shaped his career and built resilience, as well as some poignant tools to decompress during these unprecedented times. 21.01.2022 In 2020, we have learnt that superheroes don't always wear capes. Dr Myo is a Sight For All Oculoplastics Fellow, currently completing his one-year fellowship in this specialised field at Yangon Eye Hospital. Dr Myo is also a superhero. Working as a busy ophthalmologist at Thingangyun Hospital, Dr Myo now uses PPE when treating patients. He currently treats up to 15 patients a day, though the need is greater. Fortunately, the recommencement of elective surgery means that the... number of consultations is growing, however patient numbers remain limited by mandatory social distancing requirements. Despite challenges, Dr Myo continues to travel to Yangon Eye Hospital for his Fellowship training each week. He is excited to learn the Oculoplastics sub-speciality and hopes that dedicated Oculoplastics clinics will be opened to meet the growing need in Myanmar.

20.01.2022 The need to treat avoidable blindness has not changed, despite the huge adjustments we have all made as we navigate COVID -19. Our doctors and primary health care teams dont stop working, and neither have we. To support our colleagues and Partners around the world, Sight For All has pivoted some of our #DFAT funding to continue the sharing of vital information and specialised learning online. In early May, we launched our COVID-19 Information Portal, which shares reliable i...nformation across a number of categories about COVID-19, to our colleagues. We also held a Webinar with Dr Kenneth Li, the Chief of Service and Consultant in Ophthalmology, United Christian Hospital/Tseung Kwan O Hospital, Hong Kong. The Webinar was attended by close to 40 partners across Asia. This response was possible thanks to our generous supporters and #AustralianAid, through DFAT's #ANCPs. See more

19.01.2022 As part of our COVID-19 response, Thingangyun Hospital in Myanmar received slit lamp shields from Sight For All. These slit lamp shields have also successfully been used in operating theatres and are placed between the patient and ophthalmologist whilst the microscope is used during sight saving surgery. Each shield provides extra protection for eye health care professionals and this image has inspired other facilities in Myanmar to adopt slit lamp shields to protect frontline health care professionals. This project was driven by Sight For All's Myanmar In-Country Officer, our partners in Myanmar and with support from Australian Aid and DFAT's #ANCP.

19.01.2022 It was indeed an honor and privilege to have this chance to enhance my knowledge, Thank you. These are the words of Dr Kiry Lom Orng, the first Ocular Oncologist in Cambodia who completed her specialised Sight For All Fellowship in August 2020. Dr Lom Orng spent 7 months in India, from January to July 2020, under the guidance of Visionary Dr Santosh. Though her training was impacted by the pandemic, she worked alongside mentors achieving more than 500 out patient consultat...ions as well as observing 150 surgical procedures. Since graduating, Dr Lom Orng continues to look for opportunities to establish an Ocular Oncology Unit in Cambodia. Due to limited equipment available she is working to collaborate with complementary departments to share resources. Congratulations Dr Lom Orng on completing your Fellowship!

18.01.2022 Did you know that over 20,000 Australians are dying every year due to a preventable disease? More than half way through his 12 months as Australian of the Year for 2020, our Chariman, Dr James Muecke continues to raise awareness of the dangers of sugar and type 2 diabetes, an illness that impacts 1.2million Australians. One complication of this insidious disease is diabetic retinopathy, eye damage that can lead to blindness. National Diabetes Week ends on 18th of July, but let's keep the conversation going with Diabetes Australia, Diabetes SA and Dr James Muecke.

01.01.2022 Look at this beautiful boy! We met him some time ago when visiting Tanintharyi, a small town in southern Myanmar. His face is painted with thanaka, a yellowish white paste made from ground bark which is most commonly applied to the face. This kind of painting is a special and distinctive feature of the culture of Myanmar. The paint has moisturising properties and can be used to protect the skin from sunlight and cool the skin in hot weather. It is also often used during even...ts and festivals. It is always a joy for us to arrive in Myanmar and see so many smiling faces (often beautifully decorated with thanaka). We cant wait to get back and see those faces again!
