22.01.2022 'Literacy and Multilingual Education', running this semester at SIL Australia, introduces students to theories of literacy and explores the issues affecting literacy in ethnolinguistic communities. Various models of multilingual education are examined and students learn to design appropriate materials for a multilingual education project, in the light of global issues and organisations impacting local literacy program design. Classroomsand communitiesaround the world are wonderfully diverse. Multilingual education programs encourage communities and provide excellent learning opportunities for allin both vernacular languages and languages of education. #literacy #multilingual #multilingualeducation #education #vernacular #languageofeducation #sila #silaustralia

15.01.2022 Throwback Thursday! Where this game of volleyball happened now stands the building which hosts our computer lab, finance office, and staff offices upstairs. The buildings and property may have changed, but SIL Australia's purpose remains the same: to train people for cross-cultural work.

14.01.2022 We are excited about the beginning of semester two! So much has changed since the beginning of the year. 12.01.2022 People who translate a text from one language to another are like bridges allowing us to access something we couldn't reach before. A number of staff at SIL Australia have been involved in translation projects, and our training prepares people for many roles in language development, including translation. SILA longs to see minority ethnolinguistic communities enabled and encouraged in sustainable language development through research, translation and literacy. We celebrate In...ternational Translation Day today with many others around the world! #translation #internationaltranslationday #internationaltranslationday2020 #language #languages #languagedevelopment #sila #silaustralia

11.01.2022 Throwback Thursday! Remember when we could have international guests at events? In July 2019 SIL Australia hosted a workshop run by SIL Pacific Area on the topic of multilingualism, urbanisation and diaspora. SIL Australia also held the second annual Bruce Hooley dinner and lecture.... Sadly, this year the dinner and a workshop on localisation had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. We look forward to being able to have international guestsparticipants and speakersin July 2021. 11.01.2022 The SIL Australia library has copies of many Bibles in languages other than English. Pictured here is the Marovo language translation from Solomon Islands, published in 1956. Inside the front cover of our copy of this Bible is a news bulletin from the publisher which gives some information about the language, details of the people involved in the translation and publication of the book, and how many copies were printed in Sydney to be shipped to the Solomon Islands. What othe...r treasures might lurk on our library shelves? #bibleyear2020 #translation #language #marovo #solomonislands #sila #silaustralia

11.01.2022 How do you make sense of words you can't read? Literacy offers access to information and connection to people far away. It is a valuable tool for lifelong learning. At SIL Australia our literacy staff have been involved in several multilingual education programs and have seen first hand the difference learning to read can make to individuals and communities. 'We long to see people flourishing in community using the languages they value most.'... 10.01.2022 Throwback Thursday! During Launch Phonetics students transcribed the sounds they use in speaking Australian English into the International Phonetic Alphabet, and then tackled non-English sounds.
