21.01.2022 Another great Business League Breakfast yesterday morning... great turnout to hear guest speaker Peta Fielding from Burleigh Brewing.
19.01.2022 Simpatico Safety- Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Training Update Over the past couple of weeks, health and safety precautions have been put in place at Simpatico Safety Training Cleveland campus to help curb the spread of COVID-19. The health, safety and well-being of students and staff remains our top priority and as such, prior to commencing any face to face classes we contact students directly to ensure that they do not feel ill or exhibit any symptoms consistent with COV...ID-19. We also ask if they have returned from overseas travel (or have had contact with people who have recently returned from overseas) within the last 14 days. Our class schedule is being reviewed daily in an effort to reduce risks to students and staff and also to adhere to the day to day updates released by State and Federal Government authorities. The below strategies are already in place at our Cleveland campus for students who are enrolled in classes currently: Multiple hand sanitisers are in place throughout our training rooms. Door handles are sanitised inside and out during the day. All desks and common use areas and equipment are disinfected regularly throughout the day. Use of a handheld skin surface thermometer to check skin surface temperatures on arrival. Social distancing measures all seating arranged to ensure 1.5m between students, we are capping numbers and reducing class hours of attendance. We have asked staff that if they feel ill or exhibit symptoms consistent with COVID -19 to self-isolate and consult with healthcare providers. All staff and students (onsite) are educated on correct hand washing techniques. Extending our capacity for online training options, full courses and short workshops to make any isolation time off you experience productive. For further information about COVID-19, please see the following links. Australian Government Department of Health (www.health.gov.au), the National VET regulator (www.asqa.gov.au), and the World Health Organisation (www.who.int), for updates and advice. We thank you for your support and business throughout this outbreak and hope you are reassured that your health is our primary concern. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us for further information. Keep well, be safe, from the Simpatico Safety Training team. Andrew, Jo and Anna
19.01.2022 Mental Health Tips for business owners during the pandemic
19.01.2022 MAINTAINING DUE DILIGENCE DURING THE TOUGH TIMES If there is one thing that most business owners, and indeed most Australians, would agree with at the moment, is that we are going through tough times. We are all plotting our course through uncharted waters. We are having to digest information and make decisions at an uncomfortably rapid rate in a continually changing environment. We need to be ever more diligent in our decision-making as the consequences can be very real, im...pactful and long-lasting. What is highlighted at the moment is the mindset where people sometimes suspend or ignore safety considerations or the broader impact in order to minimise the impact on their working or personal life. For example, there is a current spike in the purchase of quad-bikes before legislated safety regulations come in regarding the use of a roll-bar. While there has been much argument against the fitting of roll-bars, there has been broad consultation with relevant stakeholders over the last few years. Quad-bikes are a commonly used and popular piece of equipment in the rural setting. The fact is that there have been many deaths and serious injuries in this country from quad-bike incidents, and the changes are designed to minimise this risk. Users should question whether the quad bike is the most suitable tool for the job (i.e. are there any suitable alternatives), and if so what measures can be taken to minimise the risk, including roll-bars. Currently, we hear of many people travelling across state borders before they close. While the reasons for doing so may be very relevant or simply be an inconvenience, it is concerning to think that some people will seek a loophole or beat the lowering State boom-gate while maybe not considering the broader picture regarding their actions. It is, in fact, not too dissimilar to people trying to beat the railway crossing boom-gate where there is a significant personal cost to the decision, but also the impact on ‘second victims’ such as the train driver, passengers, 1st responders, public, and others. In our workplaces, we have many measures in place to control our risks, and these generally work really well during ‘normal’ operations. It is the ‘out of the ordinary’ stuff that often sees us at greater risk because we just don’t look closely enough at the process itself and in its entirety. So, at this time, ask yourselves the questions: Are we looking closely enough at what we are doing? Are we taking into account all factors and all potential direct and indirect impacts? Are we compromising our safety because it is inconvenient? Remain vigilant, and stay safe.
18.01.2022 VIRTUAL CLASSROOM TRAINING FOR HEALTH & SAFETY REPS Workplace Health and Safety QLD has just released approval for Simpatico Safety Training to run interactive, online Health and Safety Representative training for you to access while you are working from home or at your workplace. This enables elected HSRs to receive their mandated training from the safety of their home office or workplace. This also breaks the distance barrier for HSRs working in regional areas. We will work... with employers and workers to ensure that they have the resources required to access the training via a virtual classroom on Zoom. Zoom allows people to interact with the trainer and be engaged within the learning environment with other learners in a similar manner as a face-to-face course. We ensure our class numbers are capped to allow each participant the time to interact with others and to learn at their own pace. We appreciate that the online training environment may be unfamiliar to some, so we shall provide instructions and a Zoom 101 tutorial upon enrolment to ensure that no one falls behind. As we have recently advised, changes to the WHS Act have impacted training requirements for Health and Safety Reps, i.e. it is mandatory for newly elected HSRs to be trained within 3 months of election, and mandatory refresher training is to be undertaken every 3 years (previously annually). Upcoming virtual training dates for full HSR training online: May Course Block 1: 20th and 21st May 2020 (Days 1 and 2) Block 2: 27th and 28th May 2020 (Days 3 and 4) Last day held on the 4th June June Course Block 1: 8th and 9th June 2020 (Days 1 and 2) Block 2: 15th and 16th June 2020 (Days 3 and 4) Last day held on the 22nd June Contact us for additional dates Upcoming virtual training dates for HSR refresher training: 29th May 2020 To enrol, visit our website or call 07 3286 7665 Meanwhile, drop us a line if we can help you at [email protected] or call us on (07) 3286 7665

16.01.2022 HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL REGISTERS Hi everyone, Today I want to talk a little about chemicals and chemical safety. There is new legislation around rules for workplaces that use hazardous chemicals where these workplaces now must keep a register for use by workers. This is an easy process and there are tools available for your use. I have put 2 links to Safe Work Australia templates at the bottom of the post.... Firstly, you might ask what is a hazardous chemical? A hazardous chemical may cause adverse health effects, or may exhibit physicochemical effects, such as flammable, corrosive, explosive, chemically reactive and oxidising chemicals. What is a hazardous chemicals register? Put simply, this is a list of all hazardous chemicals used, handled or stored at your workplace (subject to exclusions). You must keep the current safety data sheet (SDS) as produced by the manufacturer or importer for each hazardous chemical with the register. The SDS will give you important information to assist you to safely use and manage hazardous chemicals. For example, it includes information on fire hazards, reactivity, health hazards, safe storage conditions, first aid treatment, and emergency response actions. Your chemicals supplier should provide an SDS on request, unless the chemical is a consumer product, or the supplier is a retailer. In these cases, the SDS will be available from the product’s Australian manufacturer or importer. The register must be accessible to workers and anyone else who is likely to be affected by chemicals at your workplace. You also need to ensure the register can be used during a power outage, as there’s a good chance emergency services or the circumstances of the emergency itself will cut the power. First response actions are much easier to tackle if there is easy access to information about all chemicals on site. Chemicals that are not classified as hazardous do not need to be included on the register. Managing the risks of hazardous chemicals Code of Practice: https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au//Managing-risks-of-hazardo Hazardous Chemical Register Template: https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au//hazardous-chemical-r Hazardous Chemicals Manifest Template: https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au//hazardous-chemicals- As always keep safe at work If you have any questions or require extra information, give Andrew or Jo a call on 07 3286 7665.

15.01.2022 A quick guide for businesses managing COVID-19 in the workplace
15.01.2022 Important! Workers Compensation legislation update. The Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) has tightened legislative requirements relating to Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinators (RRTWC). This includes a requirement to provide RRTWC details to the insurer and to ensure they can adequately demonstrate that the RRTWC is appropriately qualified. These changes take effect from 1 July 2020. Why is it important to effectively manage rehabilitation and return to work pr...ocesses? In Queensland, a Worker's Compensation claim is accepted every 5 minutes. Work injuries cost QLD employers around $1.32 billion annually. Injuries affect the injured worker, his/her family and friends, co-workers, workflow and productivity. Assisting a worker to return to pre-injury status early has been shown to minimise the impact of workplace injury. What can you do as an employer? Enrolling your RRTWC in our nationally accredited course demonstrates that your RRTWC is appropriately qualified. The next dates at our Cleveland campus are: 15 to 17 April 2020 20-22 May 2020 15-17 July 2020 Message our page, email or call our office to talk to Jo, Andrew or Anna for bookings or advice, [email protected] or (07) 3286 7665.

10.01.2022 HSR Mandatory refresher training Do you have Health and Safety Representatives at your workplace? The HSR role promotes the health and safety of workers in their work group. Powers and functions given to HSR's under the WHS Act enable them to effectively represent the interests of workers and contribute to work health and safety matters. Recent changes to the WHS Act have impacted training requirements for Health and Safety Reps, i.e. it is now mandatory for newly elected HSR...s to be trained within 3 months of election, and mandatory refresher training is to be undertaken every 3 years (previously annually). Simpatico Safety is running a 1-day refresher course, for those who have completed the 5-day initial HSR training, on the 20th March. Upcoming dates for HSR refresher training at our Cleveland campus: 20th March 2020 9th April 2020 29th May 2020 Upcoming dates for full HSR training at our Cleveland campus: 16th to the 20th March 2020 20th to the 24th April 2020 8th to the 12th June 2020 We have found that the annual refresher training allowed HSRs to get together and encourage each other by talking about wins. The change to a 3-yearly refresher means that we do not get to see HSRs as often to talk about role. We are looking at some dates for a HSR Breakfast of Champions More details to follow. Meanwhile, message our page or drop us a line if we can help you at [email protected] or 07 3286 7665

06.01.2022 FIRST INDUSTRIAL MANSLAUGHTER PROSECUTIONS UNDER REVISED QLD WHS LAWS In 2017 the QLD Work Health and Safety Laws were revised to introduce stronger legal protections for workers by introducing criminal penalties under the new Industrial manslaughter laws. These laws are the first of their kind to be introduced by a state jurisdiction, and they leave negligent employers culpable in workplace deaths and introduce heavy criminal penalties, for both individuals and corporate o...ffenders. This the first prosecution for industrial manslaughter in Queensland, and the 2 directors have had charges laid. Allegations were that a Brisbane Auto recycling plant caused the death of the worker by failing to effectively manage traffic on their site: 1. By separating pedestrians from moving mobile plant, and 2. Inadequate supervision of workers. What does this mean for your workplace? If your site uses moving mobile plant, e.g. forklifts, then you should consider: 1. Observing the movements of your plant 2. Identifying those areas where pedestrians are at risk of being struck 3. Are your walkways and crossings in the right place, and are people using them? 4. Restricting pedestrian access to certain site areas, e.g. warehouse loading/unloading areas 5. Can you minimise forklift movements by reorganising the site layout or using conveyor systems? 6. Holding toolbox sessions/team meetings regarding responsibilities of pedestrians and forklift operators, e.g. movements near forklifts, eye contact, safe phone use 7. Consider how workers, drivers, and other stakeholders can be involved in consultative processes to promote idea exchange and buy-in for more effective risk management Follow this link to read the full statement released by the Honorable Grace Grace: http://statements.qld.gov.au//first-prosecution-under-quee

05.01.2022 Low Voltage Rescue and Resuscitation Training during the COVID-19 pandemic On Friday, a newsletter was released by the Electrical Safety Office regarding the current issues facing electrical licence holders in accessing CPR/LVR/PTR training through registered training providers due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Electrical Safety Office has recognised this and has released their advice at the following link: https://www.vision6.com.au/v/15149/1817654380/email.h...tml Key Points: 1. Those electrical licence holders affected by short-notice cancellation of courses shall have CPR/LVR/PTR requirements waived under the following conditions: a) Advising their employer that they have not completed the training, and b) Training will need to be completed as soon as possible once training becomes available (this will be followed up by the ESO) 2. Workers whose CPR/PTR/LVR training is not current should not act in roles requiring this training 3. Work should be rescheduled or redesigned so that a safety observer is not required in the case of work involving workers whose training is not current 4. Where rescheduled or redesigning of the job is not possible, work may only be performed in accordance with a documented Risk Assessment, factoring in the currency of workers’ training, following consultation, and where all parties involved are satisfied it is safe to proceed 5. When assessing worker competency, consider: a) Time since expiry b) Rescuer’s experience c) Familiarity and confidence in the team members 6. Consider using online resources from your regular training provider as interim refresher training At Simpatico Safety, we are committed to supporting your business and workers through this period. Andrew and I can assist you in your discussions around individual workplace risk assessments and worker competencies. We also have the capability to provide online remote training of LVR/CPR via Zoom as an interactive interim refresher. Please keep in touch as we are here to assist and support you.
