25.01.2022 The anatomical and physiological effects of this pose are substantial. As a sufferer of a bowel disease, they are worth my constant attention and have had a positive impact on the my body functions. The systems of your body constantly run and keep you moving, breathing and restoring. But when we don’t take mini pauses in our day or night, the body’s resilience is minimised. Poses like child's pose assist and tone the Parasympathetic fibres that run all the way up one of your... major nerves in the body, the Vagus Nerve. What does this all mean? It means you body will be able to process food more effectively and may result in less weight gain! You will be able to gain control of the flow of your breath, possibly deepen it. It will mean you will lower the production of cortisol, the primary stress hormone. This will increase your body’s ability to process sugars. Take moments in your day, whether in a child’s pose like me here or even sitting at a table focusing on your natural breath flow. 25.01.2022 Tea and coffee... I have certainly have a nostalgic attachment and let's face it, I even share that attachment each week after our yoga classes. It's a time we all talk about what is on our minds, how the week has gone and, more importantly, we all walk away feeling more connected. Surprisingly, these catch ups after class are becoming more and more frequent even when the daily demands are pressing we squeeze in a little catch up and check in.... I am excited to begin to organise a mini yoga retreat to be held in January and the yummy tea and food I want to share. Did I say I liked coffee and tea? Today, I sought out inspiration from Jodie. 25.01.2022 **Latest Article** Having practiced yoga in Perth since 2001, I have come to know various schools around the city and teachers that are knitted within each community. Jean Byrne PhD (Jean Byrne) was a teacher I had never had the opportunity to meet but one that I had watched from afar. Her online presence always reflected one that inspired my curiosity and revealed a very interesting, scholarly teacher.... Jean is also the studio owner of the The Yoga Space Perth, Australia a longstanding studio which, unlike so many of the other studios around town, also opens its doors to those much less fortunate. This caught my attention. Attending a yoga class, seeking out experienced teachers, is a wonderful, supportive wellbeing practice but, sadly, one that not all can afford or possibly are physically unable due to chronic disorders. As a sufferer of an inflammatory, bowel disease I have a small window of insight into the lives of some where even going out of one’s door presents large amounts of anxiety. I was excited to ask Jean about her journey into yoga, especially as a woman who had studied under many teachers nationally and internationally. Our little guy was one of those babies too eager to be born that he was born outside an emergency doorway with one nurse and a very shocked me . His eagerness never ceases to surprise us. ... As birthdays come and go I must be honest, I find them days in my life where I pause and reflect. Reflect that this life of ours is, quite literally, a flash. That I am not always grateful for each moment but that I strive to be. I have with my mini family and I hope to grow old and wrinkly...hey may be even a little bit wiser. But if we take a moment to consider the sheer scientific "fluke", that is earth's existence, then all of sudden our focus can be one of awe and wonder. Why is this worth writing about? 24.01.2022 I've been wondering why when I experience a sense of awe, it leaves me feeling altered. The proven power of the feeling of awe. We may experience it simply watching the sunrise or sunset, seeing a newborn baby, swimming in the ocean or walking amongst the trees. It can leave us with an awareness that we are "part of a universe unfathomably larger than ourselves." (Julia Baird - Phosphorescence p16) Philosophers, deep thinkers and scientists have consistently looked into its ...influences for generations. Albert Einstein wrote, "He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; their eyes are closed." It has also been proven to make us "less irritable, more humble, more curious and creative." (Julia Baird - Phosphorescence p23) But why? Why is it worth exploring the sense of awe and feeling small? When we experience a sense of awe, we are overwhelmed with this experience of connectedness and bring a small part of a much larger picture. This brings me to my next question, why do we constantly try to make ourselves "appear bigger"? The irony of me posting here on social media is not lost on me . So many think they need to appear BIG. Can we learn to be comfortable with feeling small? Be able to "... experience the awe that comes from being silenced by something greater than ourselves, something unfathomable, unconquerable and mysterious." 23.01.2022 Developing Body Confidence. My children squabble and then their fiercely adore each other. But when in nature, any negative biases seem to disapate. I bet you know what I'm talking about! ... As I recover from another cold I forced myself and the children out to simply BE in nature. 23.01.2022 "I can't, I won't, I'm not good enough." Do you notice how the mind constantly strives? Do you ever feel enough? Well if we were to only pay attention to imagery around us, then no, we will never feel enough. ... Having a regular movement practice challenges our body and by doing so, challenges our fears of not being enough. This is where the "magic" happens. As we slowly build on our movement practices, no matter how small the steps are, we develop a strong sense of confidence and resilience that is very hard to be shaken. And that's worth thinking about! Our mind will say "oh no you are pathetic" but then we will walk for 30mins and realise that in fact we aren't all that bad! Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed certain old habits are becoming more and more noticeable, ones which are negative and don't help me. As our movement practice grows it helps us to build our resilience and makes us more aware of how we have negative thoughts about ourselves. This flows into our relationships and how we move about the world. 22.01.2022 I am deciding to share my written material via my website from now on. So for my last week of sharing insights here on social media, I am running with the theme of Steady strength building. As we complete the term I am reflecting on the resilience of all of you. The sequences I designed these past 9 weeks allowed us to move our bodies while focusing on the theme of building our physical and mental resilience. ... As I watch those around me I can see evidence that it has had subtle but long lasting effects. This sequence is both accessible and also gently strength building. One I have taught often this term. As we move through another phase of a very challenging year, don't underestimate moving your body each and every day. Ensure these movements are ones which support strength building and relaxation. You will find a new level of physical development and sustainability in your daily life. I am already excited to begin sequence planning for term 4 and we will focus on a new theme which will lead us towards the end of our year with newness and hope. 22.01.2022 Just like I say in class each week, this is me practicing it myself and captured in "mini-pause", aka cat cuddle. When we lost our very cool black cat, Mr Ali, to a sudden stroke, the only thing I thought of was how he would demand cuddles always at the most inconvenient time for me. I was struck with a sense of regret that I didn't just let go more and succumb to his furry cuddle time. ... So now our beautiful rescue, Mr Leo, has the exact same habit. But this time I allow myself to be stopped in the middle of whatever it is I'm doing and cuddle him back. Mini-pause. The memories of Ali's loss, make it easier for me to let go. I only have to think of him and it reminds me that taking mini-pauses, albeit fur cuddles, in our day have immense physical and mental health benefits. Research is even now proving the validity of animals around all ages but especially those with chronic illnesses. Yoga isn't just poses on a rubber mat. Mini-pauses, just like this, are also a part of daily yoga. The act of giving love and nurturing another is all apart of what makes up a yogic practice. This week's class is incorporating Viparita Trikonasana or Reverse Triangle Pose. ‘Viparita’ is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘Reverse or Inverted’, and ‘Trikona’ means ‘Three Corners’ or ‘Triangle’.... As we lengthen through the side waist, the torso moves backwards towards the leg creating a gentle backbend. A movement we don't normally make in daily life but mimics those beautiful arm positions a dancer may create. 19.01.2022 What is it about these bowls, the sounds they resonate, that fascinates us all so much? My two cheeky monkeys know when they are allowed to touch them! Thus is one of those times! Their resonating tones are certainly unique and captivating. 16.01.2022 We constantly give to so many people in our daily lives in so many different ways small and big. Most days we are giving from the moment our alarm goes off and our eyes open in the morning. So my question to you is how do you give back to yourself and especially your body & mind? ... Your body is incredible! You will hear me say it often if you attend a class but you are a truly amazing piece of nature! By simply taking a pose like this one, my breath with slow, my nervous system will shift into a rest and digest response and my mind will be given an opportunity to reset. There is nothing wrong with stress. Stress is a natural part of our daily lives. Stress becomes a negative influence when we never take regular pauses. This means that our bodies cannot easily reset and we may lose the ability to slow down. Not to mention the ability to digest food easily! So if you are curious, give this simple pose a go. Lift your legs up onto a couch and lie for 5-10mins. Place your hands out wide or on your belly. Notice your belly rise and fall with your natural breath. It may be the beginning of many mini pockets just like it. My neck muscles slowly become tenser and my lower back gets sore. Yoga, movement and meditation are really useful tools to keep my body feeling more mobile. Ha! 15.01.2022 Do any of you take time out to think with no agenda? Time to think about random things, nothing too specific, rather than think about all that worries us? I am curious how you all factor in time to think. I don't get many opportunities in my day to to this except very early in the morning, before my household wakes up. The irony is that, when I do get that tiny pocket of thinking time, I am less "in my head" for the rest of the day. But here's a really useful fact, you know h...ow much I love science, when we allow space to think, with no set outcome or agenda, our right brain has an opportunity to explore it's creative processes and problem solve. I think it's quite interesting then that our daily lives are generally set up in a way that doesn't allow us much time to think. Rather be mindlessly following the "To Do Lists" of our lives. So next time we have a spare moment, let's experiment by filling it with nothing but random thoughts with no agenda. 14.01.2022 The other day a lovely friend of mine lost her grandmother to whom she was very close. Another dear friend is a new mum and needs that little bit of extra help at hom. Last week I offered both women a little bit of extra support through tiny acts of kindness. They were the kind of acts others offered me when I went through the same experiences. ... 13.01.2022 One day you may feel like you are "gliding" through life and then the next day may feel that you are swimming against the current with little, or no, reserves left. As I was photographed gliding alongside this amazing teenage whale shark (25 years old), I was struck by his grace and size. In the same moment, my own physical insignificance became very apparent. I was in a state of awe and wonder for two days after this photo was taken. ... Now we can't always experience awe and wonder with a whale shark but I was reminded how healing it is to experience awe and wonder. As children, we are very good at this skill and so have the ability to connect to joy very quickly. We can, however, capture mini awe inspiring moments by simply taking notice of that which surrounds us. It could be a conversation of connection and love with a child, a morning icy droplet on a leaf, cloud gazing and a laugh from a dear friend. Today I had a beautiful coffee after class with two students and we chatted about life, study and motherhood. It left me reflecting in awe and wonder at the power that we, as mothers, have stored deep within us. So next time you experience a day where each moment things appear to be moving against you, take a pause. Give yourself the space to notice your breath, glance at something that might make you smile, laugh or, at the very least, pause your negative thought processes for a brief moment. I began to reflect on those women and children whom don't have many choices available for taking care of their health and well-being as a result of domestic violence. 09.01.2022 Thank you to my beautiful friend and teacher @charleyoga that gave me outdoor adventure ideas. We walked and walked up a very steep hill with excited children so far ahead that they were out of sight. I looked over the to the view and noticed this. A glowing wattle bush in full sunlight. At the moment I am compelled to developing the skill of noticing, especially when in and around natural landscapes. The children constantly remind me how I have lost this ability, this skill... which they so easily practice daily. How do you cope living in and around a city? I crave so much nature. A trip to our northern coastline reminded me that these pockets in nature allows us to connect with our children and form memories together. With the lack of tree up north, I was reminded that they are very important to me. When I am surrounded by them, I feel small, insignificant and am reminded that we are all a part of this environmental landscape. Awe and wonder and their healing benefits. But we don't have the means, nor want to, pack up our life and move more remote. Family and friends are so close and it is the community we have come to love. Are you the same? After struggling with a bowel disorder, and poor health once I became a mum, sent me down a new direction in life that placed certain hobbies on hold. I am taking up my love of climbing once more. But it is all thanks to my Yoga practice. ... The practice of Yoga is when we unite our movement, with our breath and, lastly, our mind. They become one. Yoga is made up of eight parts, and the poses are just one eighth! 09.01.2022 Thursday evening meditation is nearly here again? Am I mindful in my week? Probably not as much as I think I am! Where do the weeks disappear too? I like to say I am mindful during the day, taking pauses to see the beauty in a moment but when I realise how quickly the weeks are slipping by, I question how mindful of am. 07.01.2022 Letting go of expectations...now I'm always curious about this concept. It is a natural challenge for most of us! I just heard a dad yell to his daughter in a pool "come on...swim better!" Yoga constantly reminds us that each day we will move breathe and think differently. This impermanence is natural. Nothing is permanent.... Every experience offers an opportunity to be present, let go of expectations and then be fully absorbed in the creation of memories. Yikes where is the wine now you ask? 03.01.2022 I bundled our belongings together and out of the ute and turned around. This sight made me hold my breath and I hastily grabbed my camera. The photographer in me will never disappear but teaching Yoga is so much more fullfilling. As I studied the dusk colours I stopped, listened and took deeper belly breaths. In the morning I rise with the sun and roll out my Yoga mat. But there are many days I can't get up in time before my mini humans invade that quiet space, I just can't... be bothered, yep you read it correctly! There are some weeks I forget that Yoga is my most preferred movement practice, I begin to feel more anger, pain and even forget about the natural world around me. Then as the sun rises the next day, no matter how terrible yesterday was, I am reminded how much Yoga brings to my life. How it helps me move my body, connect back to my flow of breath and be aware of my thought processes, even the ones that are not helpful. Yoga helps me connect to the reality that, yes I am small, one of many, but that I am connected to our natural world. It reminds me that we are all stand as one and never in isolation. We are all connected. So if this winter has slowed you down. That isn't altogether a bad thing. If you haven't moved your body and are already experiencing discomfort, maybe tension pain, that too is ok. Winter is cold, dark and we tend to want to hibernate. By taking that break, it helps us realise how much we enjoy movement or may be even encourages us to try something new. May be Yoga? As my Face-To-Face classes start back next week I am inspired to share Julia Baird's beautiful words with you. 02.01.2022 It was a very common comment most people utter to me as they begin attending my Yoga classes. "I'm finally doing this! Something for me!" But this time, as I read the email, I was reminded of Brene Brown's statement about our own sense of worthiness. ... "The only decision we get to make is what role we want to play in our own lives." We have all suffered in many ways, this year has seen unprecedented events take place. It has encouraged us to look at our daily lives and question many things and feel grateful for others. What role are we going to have in our daily life? How do we choose to spend our time, money and energy? Can we seek healthier approaches to our daily life? Is there something we have been saying we would love to try and do but never seem to get around to it? My new client was ready to take that next step and commit to her own wellness journey. This step takes great courage and trust. I always feel inspired when a client commits themselves to their own well-being. Not all the weeks of classes will feel nice and easy. Sometimes we may not even want to show up. Some weeks we won't. As I read back over Brene's words I am reminded of something very special. We are all here to live within ou own life stories and therefore honour our well-being. Like many if you, my body has many obstacles and without a yoga practice; poses, breath exercises and meditation, it would present many more challenges, some of which would certainly immobilise me. So I keep "showing up" on my mat each day. I always feel inspired when my clients tred the path of Yoga alongside me no matter what their motivation is. 01.01.2022 Part 2 - The anatomical and physiological effects of this pose and the modern "lions" we run from Last week I spoke about child's pose, it's immense, positive effects on our nervous system, assisting us with the management of hormones and digestion among many other positive effects. As a sufferer of a bowel disease, yoga poses are worth my constant attention and I have had a positive impact on the anatomical and physiological systems of my body.... This pose is an extension from Part 1 last week. You see we don't literally run from lions like our ancestors did but the stress responses in the body are the same as if we were. Instead, I like to say we run from modern "lions". They may be work, money, illness or relationships, to name just a few. Anjaneyasana, or crescent low lunge, is a very active pose which opens our chest and extends our hip flexors. These are particular areas of our body that will become tense when we are anxious or stressed. The body remaining physically prepared to run from the "lion". We are able to counteract these anatomical responses by yoga poses and crescent low lunge is one I enjoy teaching/practicing most weeks. Take moments in your day, whether in crescent low lunge pose like me here or even sitting at a table focusing on your natural breath flow. 01.01.2022 What is the individual and universal self? Yoga, as many of you know, is a movement practice that incorporates breath and meditation practices that have long lasting effects. It also gives us an opportunity to focus our awareness inwards, reconnecting to our intuition. By doing this, we also re-connect with the "universal self". The self that connects you with me and all the living beings on our planet. Lately I have been writing any moment I can get that is child free, late... at night or early in the morning. Writing brings me great joy. As I read over this quote I felt very grateful. So many yoga and meditation teachers have gone before me and have left legacies that will continue to help others learn and grow. Being able to share with you all my knowledge and research is something I will never tire of. 01.01.2022 I am a wee bit nerdy about circles and the mathematical constant Pi...but you may well have guessed that already How does the constant Pi relate to Yoga? Just like the equation of a circle's circumference, our Yoga & movement practice can remain the one constant, daily experience. ... Each day is different from the next. One day we may wake up feeling very energised and able to create more active movements. On other days our body may need a slower and more restorative approach. But no matter how the day begins, movement can become our one constant. Empowering us to place our mental and physical well-being first. Our lives are made up of such different cycles and phases. Our days are not linear. As I look around constantly for circles, the kids join me too , I have noticed one thing, the most beautiful things do not have sharp edges and infact are made up of curves.
