25.01.2022 A medical team are taking COVID-19 patients to the beach They’re studying if feeling the warmth of the sun, hearing waves lap at the shore, and smelling salty sea air has any impact on improved healthcare It’s no surprise, that so far this study has been a huge success with incredible results It’s amazing what some fresh air, sunshine and love can do for healing

25.01.2022 Having a fur friend...maybe just what your heart needs! . Research shows that owning a dog was associated with a 33% lower risk of death for heart attack survivors living alone and 27% reduced risk of death for stroke survivors living alone, compared to people who did not own a dog . Furthermore, dog ownership was associated with a 24% reduced risk of all-cause mortality and a 31% lower risk of death by heart attack or stroke compared to non-owners #pawprintsonyourheart

24.01.2022 How much water do you drink a day? Don’t like the taste of boring water? . Research shows there is a link between not drinking enough water and obesity So if you’re watching your weight drinking water is really important! . So why is that? Well when you get dehydrated your body recognises that you are under volumed...you might start to feel faint, lightheaded or dizzy. This is often a sign you have low blood pressure or are hypotensive. Your body sends out a signal t...hat you need to consume something in order to bring up your fluid levels . Unfortunately we so often misinterrupt that as we need to eat...so we’ll snack on something or eat a great big meal ...when our bodies just needed some volume . Hence the old saying, if you’re feeling hungry have a glass of water first! It’s recommended that we drink between 2-3L of water a day...but how do we do this when water doesn’t taste that great?! If you’ve got kids...getting them to drink bottles of water is very challenging. But what’s the alternative other than sugary drinks like cordial or soft drink to quench your thirst?! . Well here’s a solution which our team here at Simply Breathe just love. Twinnings new Cold Water Infusion Tea Bags @twiningsau come in a range of different flavours. There’s no artificial colours or flavours...and best of all they taste amazingly refreshing! Our favourite is Watermelon, Strawberry and Mint. It tastes like cordial...without the sugar or additives! Simply just add water! . Not sure what flavour to get? Well a sample pack of 5 different flavours can be found at Coles supermarkets for $2. The 5 flavours include; Rose Lemonade; Passionfruit, Mango and Blood Orange; Blueberry, Apple and Blackcurrant; Watermelon, Strawberry and Mint; and Lemon, Orange and Ginger! . So cheers to keeping well hydrated during this warm weather...your body will be thankful. Bottoms up . #simplybreathephysiotherapy #movementismedicine #exerciseiskey #water #cloudjuice #drink #hydration #juststart #waterbottle #weightloss #medicine #healthyandhappy #cleaneating #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #melbourne See more

24.01.2022 How far can you walk before getting puffed? To your letterbox? Or can you make it around the block? Or even further before your breathing becomes really difficult . A common symptom of patients with heart failure, respiratory conditions and kidney disease is shortness of breath. They tend not to want to exercise or doing anything physical because they know it will make them short of breath. This becomes a vicious cycle as not wanting to be physically active makes them be...comes less able to become physically active and it all becomes too much effort and they give up! But were here to help! . Studies have showed that inspiratory muscle training improves respiratory muscle strength, functional capacity, lung function and quality of life in patients with chronic heart failure, respiratory conditions and renal impairment . A 2017 systematic review found over 2 million people worldwide have end stage renal failure requiring haemodialysis. People with chronic kidney disease commonly develop uraemic syndrome, which affects multiple systems, including the respiratory system, with complications such as pleural effusions, pulmonary hypertension, calcification of lung parenchyma and respiratory impairment. As a result of uraemia, myopathy and loss of muscle mass also occurs, due to protein-energy wasting which affects up to 75% of dialysis patients . Therefore, chronic kidney disease patients show decreased strength of soleus and diaphragm muscles and latency of the phrenic nerve which innervates the diaphragm. Consequently, chronic kidney disease patients have reduced respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, and cardiorespiratory conditioning. These complications limit participation in activities of daily living and increase mortality! . In order to improve the performance of respiratory muscles, inspiratory muscle training with a fixed load device, combined with a graduated targeted exercise program can significantly improve maximal respiratory pressures, lung function, functional capacity and quality of life. Patients following our program report they dont get so short of breath when completing daily tasks, like walking out to their letterbox!! See more

22.01.2022 Do I hear Legs Eleven? What about Winnie The Pooh? Or Top of the Shop?! . You’d be easily forgiven if you thought our team here at Simply Breathe Physiotherapy had gone mad! But we’re having fun exercising our brains by playing Bingo! . Bingo is a game of probability in which players mark off numbers on cards as the numbers are drawn randomly by a caller ... . The game originally started around 1530 as an educational tool to teach children but progressed to the modern version appearing at carnivals and fairs by the 1920’s It has become very popular with our Senior Citizens and now played regularly in community halls each week by thousands of people keen to keep their grey matter ticking over as they challenge themselves in a social setting at this game of chance! . The nicknames mentioned earlier are known as Bingo Lingo and there are rhymes for each number 1 to 90 with some dating back many decades. Sadly, there’s a reported decline in Bingo games being played due to the rise of online bingo games and gambling, insurance costs for clubs hiring a community hall and dwindling Senior Citizen Club memberships to run the games and activities . Recent studies show the health benefits of playing Bingo include; enhanced hand-eye coordination and reflexes ; it stimulates cognitive and executive decision making; encourages physical health from social interaction and sharing a few laughs, reducing stress, boosting endorphins and therefore your immune system ; and providing social support preventing isolation, depression and maintaining optimal health and longevity!! . Studies show that elderly people prone to Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease can significantly reduce its affect by playing mind games such as Bingo In other words, if you don’t use it, you loose it. We must remember that movement is also medicine for our brains as well as our bodies! . So why not join a Seniors Citizen Club, or volunteer at one nearby to help keep those older individuals and yourself as mentally active as possible! For a club near you go to www.nationalseniors.com.au . ** Answers: Legs Eleven (11); Winnie The Pooh (42); Top of the Shop (90) See more

22.01.2022 We’re lapping up this beautiful Summer weather... but make sure you stay well hydrated and check in on your neighbours and loved ones...including your furry friends . With an extreme heatwave hitting Eastern Australia, temperatures in Melbourne city are expected to hit 43 degrees celsius tomorrow, and remaining about 30 degrees celsius overnight . In hot weather, our body has to actively try to cool us down. One of the main mechanisms for this is perspiration. When we... sweat, we loose water out of our skin - heat exhaustion and the more serious heat stroke can result. The best fluid to drink is water. Stay away from sugary, high energy drinks which will make you feel worse. If you’re well hydrated, you shouldn’t feel thirsty or lethargic and your urine should be a clear colour rather than a dark yellow or orange colour . So drink up. Stay in the shade. Have a swim. Wear a hat and sunscreen...and watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Remember to seek medical help early if you’re at all concerned. 17.01.2022 Heart broken because you didn’t get a Valentine’s?! . Broken heart syndrome is an actual medical condition. It’s called Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy and results from the heart muscle suddenly becoming weakened often occurring after severe emotional or physical stress! . In this condition, the hearts main pumping chamber changes shape affecting the hearts ability to effectively pump blood around the body. The change in shape of the heart resembles a Tako-Taubo pot, which is a ...Japanese fishing device used to catch Octopus. Hence its name! . First described in 1990 in Japan, the condition has only been recognised in Australia for the last 10 years!! . Common triggers may include the death of a loved one, a serious accident, a fierce argument, an unexpected loss or a sudden illness . Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy can occur at any age in both men and women, although it seems to affect older women . The main symptoms are sudden chest pain, shortness of breathe or sudden fainting usually after experiencing severe stress!! . The good news is, Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy is usually temporary healing with the correct management, within a few months. It is important to manage any physical or emotional stress that may have triggered your condition. 15.01.2022 Happy World Asthma Day!! This annual event is organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) with the aim to raise awareness and discussions around how to best monitor, control and treat the signs and symptoms of Asthma . This year marks the 20th annual World Asthma Day with the theme, Never too early, never too late. It’s always the right one to address airways disease. This theme calls out to both patients and healthcare providers to consider and evaluate sy...mptoms, irrespective of the time when they occur. The idea is to ensure that Asthma is controlled and prevented in all possible ways . The World Health Organisation states that a total of 235 million people have Asthma worldwide. Asthma is a condition which can cause shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and chest tightness. Asthma is known to be one of the most chronic health conditions amongst children . All countries have Asthma, irrespective of the level of development in that country. However, around 80% of Asthma deaths occur in low and lower-middle income countries, and it doesn’t need to be that way! . It is hoped that World Asthma Day 2018 will raise awareness about Asthma prevention and control. People with Asthma can prevent flare ups and attack’s and therefore death, by avoiding common triggers such as tobacco smoke, outdoor pollutants and irritants, and carefully monitor the signs and symptoms of the common cold and flu Hence the annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended . Episodes of Asthma can also be prevented by correctly using inhalers and in the right dosages . Need help working out your Asthma Management Plan? Or don’t have one ready for Winter? Then give us a call on (03) 8889 7847 and we’ll get you breathing with ease . 14.01.2022 We all know that walking is good for us! But did you know that the speed and pattern at which people walk can reveal what their brain function is like? . Researchers led by a Physiotherapist have found that the speed at which you walk is linked to your risk of cognitive diseases such as Dementia later in life. If something is not quite right with your brain health, then it can present as difficulties walking. . Its well known that walking is a fairly complex function whi...ch we all take for granted, but the brain has to bring together lots of processes to make it all smooth and flow, such as balance, coordination, proprioception etc. . We found that a walking speed of about 1 metre per second was linked to a decline in memory, and that the variability of walking patterns was also associated with a decrease in memory. . Physiotherapists are developing an app designed to increase mobility, increase cognitive function and reduce falls. . 06.01.2022 How much water do you drink a day? Dont like the taste of boring water? . Research shows there is a link between not drinking enough water and obesity So if youre watching your weight drinking water is really important! Unfortunately we so often misinterrupt that as we need to eat...so well snack on something or eat a great big meal ...when our bodies just needed some volume . Hence the old saying, if youre feeling hungry have a glass of water first! Its recommended that we drink between 2-3L of water a day...but how do we do this when water doesnt taste that great?! If youve got kids...getting them to drink bottles of water is very challenging. But whats the alternative other than sugary drinks like cordial or soft drink to quench your thirst?! . Well heres a solution which our team here at Simply Breathe just love. Twinnings new Cold Water Infusion Tea Bags @twiningsau come in a range of different flavours. Theres no artificial colours or flavours...and best of all they taste amazingly refreshing! Our favourite is Watermelon, Strawberry and Mint. It tastes like cordial...without the sugar or additives! Simply just add water! . Not sure what flavour to get? Well a sample pack of 5 different flavours can be found at Coles supermarkets for $2. The 5 flavours include; Rose Lemonade; Passionfruit, Mango and Blood Orange; Blueberry, Apple and Blackcurrant; Watermelon, Strawberry and Mint; and Lemon, Orange and Ginger! . 04.01.2022 Were lapping up this beautiful Summer weather... but make sure you stay well hydrated and check in on your neighbours and loved ones...including your furry friends . If youre well hydrated, you shouldnt feel thirsty or lethargic and your urine should be a clear colour rather than a dark yellow or orange colour . So drink up. Stay in the shade. Have a swim. Wear a hat and sunscreen...and watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Remember to seek medical help early if youre at all concerned. 04.01.2022 It certainly ain’t easy being wheezy!! Research has found that only 10% of Asthma and COPD patients use correct inhaler technique to deliver their critical medicines!! . When inhalers are used incorrectly the full dose may fail to reach the targeted areas of the lunch. Poor inhaler technique is associated with a 50% increased risk of hospitalisation, emergency department visits and use of oral corticosteroids. By simply correcting a patients technique has been shown to im...prove Asthma and COPD control, quality of life and lung function . Certain errors such a breathing out when using a pressurised metered dose inhaler; loading a Turbuhaler when it is horizontal; failing to slide the lever on an Accuhaler; not using a spacer; or not piercing a single dose dry powder inhaler properly can result in little to no medicine being inhaled at all . Correct technique depends on the inhaler type, so patients need to understand the right steps for their own inhaler especially in times when they are distressed and need to use it the most . Randomised Controlled Trials show that adults and children with a respiratory condition are more likely to use their inhaler correctly and feel more in control of their symptom management after a trained health professional has reviewed and modified their specific inhaler technique . We’ve included a recent research paper here if you wish to have a read; https://physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com//f/10.1113/EP086641 . The better you can breathe the better you can enjoy daily tasks, by not feeling so short of breath and anxious about trying to catch your breath . 03.01.2022 Thunderstorm Asthma is believed to be caused by the combination of high grass pollen counts and unusual thunderstorm conditions with strong winds, and high temperatures and air moisture before a cold front in Spring and early Summer. It can result in people feeling wheezy, short of breath, and tight in the chest with coughing. The world’s largest Thunderstorm Asthma event occurred in Melbourne in November 2016. Sadly, 10 people died during the phenomenal event, with only 3 people having Asthma Action Plans. Now is the time to get your Asthma Plan Review (before school holidays end) by your GP or Respiratory Physician to make sure you can simply breathe with ease! . #ThunderstormAsthma #asthma #beprepared
