25.01.2022 SITB advocates for social change in our community to improve the status of women and girls. Friday was White Ribbon Day and a great opportunity for SITB members to present 1,100 students from Ignatius Park College with white ribbons to show solidarity against domestic violence in our community. Domestic violence is an important and significant issue and the white ribbons provided by SITB help to raise awareness and educate students and staff about domestic violence prevention. Thanks to Townsville Bulletin for the article to help showcase the work that SITB do in the community and for this important day.

24.01.2022 THE SUSAN KARIKE HUHUME MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP OFFICIAL LAUNCH BY SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL PNG. 13 September,2019 In a small but significant ceremony today in Ra...mu the SI Ramu Club coinciding with the Independence Celebration of Ramu International Primary School, had Mr. Nanny Huhume, husband of Late Susan Karike Huhume, officially launch the memorial scholarship honoring his wife and a very deserving and true Champion of Papua New Guinea. Susan Karike Huhume, PNG National Flag designer was 15 years old when she won a competition with her design which became our country's national identity. Our national flag is the only unifying symbol uniting our people of over 800 languages, diverse culture and traditions, making us ONE PEOPLE, ONE COUNTRY!!! The Flag is a symbol of pride and sense of belonging. She is and remains the one true hero of this great nation. May her legacy live on in the lives of all who will benefit from this memorial scholarship. Soroptimist International recognizes that access to education for girls and women at all ages is a fundamental human right and is vital for development, economic growth and poverty reduction. We live in a world where many women and girls face insurmountable barriers in completing their education, where educational outcomes for girls and women are lacking and access to continuing education is a harsh reality. We hope that through this memorial scholarship, Late Susan's legacy will leave on in the lives of the women and girls who can further their education, be independent and economically empowered to sustain themselves and contribute to the development of this great nation. PURPOSE The purpose of this scholarship is to assist girls further their education, particularly girls who come broken homes and girls who are discriminated by their mere gender. TARGET We are hoping to raise a minimum of K15,000.00 per year (K15,000 as late Susan was a 15 year old when she designed the flag). But more money raised means more girls can get educated. NUMBER OF AWARDS PER YEAR A minimum of 5 girls per year ( 5 from the number of stars on our flag). AWARD AMOUNT to be advised. SOURCE OF FUNDING we hope to seek funds through relevant government departments, office of the Prime Minister, business houses, corporate entities and citizens. PROJECT START DATE January 2020 Thank you All for making today possible and truly memorable. Watch this space for more on this memorial scholarship in the weeks to come. HAPPY 44th INDEPENDENCE PAPUA NEW GUINEA! #SusanKarikeHuhumeMemorialScholarship #TrueChampion #LegacyLivesOnThroughEducation #EmpoweringWomenAndGirlsOfPNG #HistoryMade

20.01.2022 OUR NEW PROJECT TO SUPPORT LOCAL SERVICES OFFERING SHOWERING FACILITIES TO THOSE IN NEED We are extremely fortunate to have the support of an amazing group ...of ladies at Carlyle Gardens - Retirement Living Townsville who have been helping us with a new project. We wanted to re-package our "Hygiene Care Packs" for services that provide drop-in showering facilities to those who need it. Our new "Hygiene Tool Rolls" contain the basic tools you need for daily hygiene purposes, including a face washer. The face washers will be filled and donated in large numbers so that they can be returned after use and washed and then refilled, ensuring that our friends not only have the toiletries they need, but that they'll always have a clean washer. These rolls are not only practical, but they eliminate the use of plastic bags. Thanks to the generosity of those who donate their eligible containers for recycling, we were able to purchase the face washers, and the ladies at Carlyle Gardens - Retirement Living Townsville volunteered their time to sew them together for us. Today we collect 100 rolls, and dropped off another 100 washers for sewing. It really is amazing what can be achieved when a group of kind and caring people work together to make a difference! We can't wait to pack the rolls and get them out to those services that support those in need! Thank you everyone for making this possible - kind people are my kinda people, love Kate #kindnessmatters #community #carlylegardenstownsville #recyclingsavestheplanet #localshelpinglocals #BeKind #InThisTogether #togetherwemakeadifference #thankyou #lovethyneighbour

18.01.2022 SI President Sharon Fisher shared her updates on The Road To Equality. Such an amazing opportunity for any and all SI members to listen to and speak to the Inte...rnational President. Hilary Laidler . You will be very pleased that both Sharon and Sue Latta promoted the SI Presidents Appeal badge you support fund raising for the projects. The webinars are becoming more popular with SI Members around the world and the SI Voices series cover three special components. 1. UN Rep - SI Position Statements 2. A Lived Experience 3. A Project that looks to solve the solution Pam CheesleyHollinshead I was also able to share that I attended your Region AGM last night with Kevin Hyland as the Guest Speaker on Modern Slavery. I just love these real time opportunities to be together. Pleas make sure you visit the SI website regularly so you can access the various videos and information. A key point that Sharon mentioned is that when you talk about the issues and what SI members are doing at the grass roots level all the way to the UN ... membership interests follow. This is certainly true in my club and one of the reasons that I remain a member of SI. Namaste Chris Knight SI Global Ambassador PS thank you Sue Latta for ALL that you do behind the scenes to keep our SISWP members connected.

17.01.2022 A very big thankyou to the Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club (TCHLC) for your very generous donation of $1200 which will fund a buddy bench and supply 10 statio...nery packs to a local school. It is great to see a local Club supporting a local Charity, supporting a local School, which then supports local children in need. Pictured from back to front is Candice Muggleton, Max Tavasci (TCHLC), Lorren Muggleton, Stevie Donnellan and Michael MacLaren (TCHLC). This is a very special photo as the three beautiful ladies pictured, are all of Joy's three daughters, who work tirelessly to honour their late mother, and continue her good work of helping local school children in need, towards their educational needs and create a brighter future. 17.01.2022 I love this story from Katharine Hepburn’s childhood, it covered me in goosebumps. Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy ti...ckets for the circus. Finally, there was only one other family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. The way they were dressed, you could tell they didn't have a lot of money, but their clothes were neat and clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly jabbering about the clowns, animals, and all the acts they would be seeing that night. By their excitement you could sense they had never been to the circus before. It would be a highlight of their lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You're my knight in shining armor." He was smiling and enjoying seeing his family happy. The ticket lady asked the man how many tickets he wanted? He proudly responded, "I'd like to buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets, so I can take my family to the circus." The ticket lady stated the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, the man's lip began to quiver. Then he leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?" The ticket lady again stated the price. The man didn't have enough money. How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight kids that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus? Seeing what was going on, my dad reached into his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill, and then dropped it on the ground. (We were not wealthy in any sense of the word!) My father bent down, picked up the $20 bill, tapped the man on the shoulder and said, "Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket." The man understood what was going on. He wasn't begging for a handout but certainly appreciated the help in a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation. He looked straight into my dad's eyes, took my dad's hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip quivering and a tear streaming down his cheek, he replied; "Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family." My father and I went back to our car and drove home. The $20 that my dad gave away is what we were going to buy our own tickets with. Although we didn't get to see the circus that night, we both felt a joy inside us that was far greater than seeing the circus could ever provide. That day I learnt the value to Give. The Giver is bigger than the Receiver. If you want to be large, larger than life, learn to Give. Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get - only with what you are expecting to give - which is everything. The importance of giving, blessing others can never be over emphasized because there's always joy in giving. Learn to make someone happy by acts of giving. ~ Katharine Hepburn #siaustralia #giving #kindness See more

13.01.2022 We had 1,100 reasons to smile today as Soroptimist International Townsville Breakwater members handed over 1,100 hand crafted library bags to the Joyful Foundation who will fill the library bags with much needed back to school stationary supplies for kids in need across North Queensland. These colourful library bags have been made by the women at the Townsville Women’s Corrections Centre as part of a partnership with SITB. The program provides the women with the opportunity t...o interact with the SITB members, develop teamwork and learn new skills- with many learning to sew for the first time - all while giving back to the community. The program, now in its third year, has seen thousands of library bags crafted for the kids. This program is a shining example of the multiple benefits that come from partnering across the community. 12.01.2022 THE HISTORY Rowes Bay: Soroptimist Park: The combined clubs of Soroptimist International of Townsville; Townsville West and Townsville Breakwater were the instigators of Soroptimist Park. An adventure playground, designed for children, with a focus on handicapped facilities. Under a 1988 Bicentennial project, Soroptimists added the nationally significant environmental sculpture designed by Australian sculptures to inspire the imagination of its young viewers.... The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror meaning sister, and optima meaning best. And so the name Soroptimist is perhaps best interpreted as 'the best for women'.
