Does Cricket Australia have a duty of care to Will Pucovski and his family to ensure that he can adequately manage short pitch bowling before he is selected in the team? At what point does a players health and wellbeing outside of the game supersede playing the game itself? I would love for him to make his test debut but this is probably the worst active concussion case we have ever seen and he isn’t coping at first class level.

As athletes, professional or otherwise, we wear our hearts on our sleeves and although we put in a lot of work, we risk losing week in week out as we aspire to win games and competitions and premierships. Sometimes the pressure escalated to levels a lot of us struggle with and the value of enjoying the game, the mateship, the shared effort and vision can become blurry and we can lose sight of what is truly important. Regardless of what happens on or off the field we are not defined by those results or those who choose to judge us. We are the result of what we think, what we say and what we do and if that is where we determine our value then we can all live a full and happy life.

04.01.2022 Really great panel discussion on 7 Cricket just then about concussion in cricket. It is a courageous discussion to have but also a necessary one amd how we go about managing it the right way. I certainly agree that a player like Will Pucovski needs to seriously assess how important his long term health and well-being is versus continuing to play the game he loves, not a predicament I would ever want to find myself in, I can’t imagine being literally in line to play test crick...et for Australia amd having to make a choice. As a coach it also highlights the need for us to ensure our players can assess short pitched bowling and respond in the appropriate way to ensure they minimise any chance of being hit in the head. A very interesting and fascinating topic, I’d love to hear your thoughts and if you’ve watched the Will Smith movie Concussion?????
