21.01.2022 One thing is clear COVID-19 has not been eradicated yet. Going back to work or school is not without risk and all organisations must have a plan in place before re-opening. To help, we’ve listed the key considerations for all workplaces to check off in this handy article: www.stjohnvic.com.au//opening-workplaces-safely-during-cov

19.01.2022 2500+ volunteers, 500+ staff and 200+ vehicles are only part of the story. St John is well prepared to provide additional support to the Victorian community at this time, whether it is transporting ill patients or helping vulnerable people who have no means of transport get to COVID-19 testing centres throughout the state. We will always be there for the Service of Humanity in Victoria, and have been readying ourselves with the right resources in the right places for any scen...ario. 15.01.2022 National Volunteer Week (NVW) is the annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers. At this uncertain time we feel that it is more important than ever to recognise and acknowledge Australia’s volunteers. The dates for National Volunteer Week 2020 are Monday 18 May Sunday 24 May 2020 with the theme Changing Communities. Changing Lives.

07.01.2022 Wednesday 20th May is Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW), a national day of thanks for the thousands of VICSES volunteers who serve the Victorian community 24 hours a day, seven days a week through storm, flood, road crash rescue and much more. St John recognises the great work that our SES colleagues undertake and encourages everyone to throw on some orange to help show your support.

05.01.2022 You are now more likely to die from sudden cardiac arrest in Victoria than you were in February. Why? Survival from cardiac arrest has halved during the COVID-19 pandemic, down to just 6.1% survival from an average of 12% survival rate. This is because longer ambulance response times from stringent PPE protocols are delaying defibrillation by paramedics by around 2 minutes. Just a couple of minutes doesn’t seem like much, but when your brain is starved of oxygen, every minute... matters. To increase survival rates, early CPR and defibrillation within the first 5 minutes is an absolute MUST. For every minute that passes, the chance of survival decreases by 10%. So how do we help? Get trained in CPR and know where your nearest defibrillator is, so collectively we CAN increase the survival rate. This month is #Shocktober a month to raise awareness of defibrillators and create actions that save lives. Here are 3 actions you can take today that will make a difference: 1. Learn or update your CPR skills for your loved ones - a course takes as little as an hour and can now be done 100% online (link Virtual CPR) 2. Find your closest defibrillator to home or work here: https://registermyaed.ambulance.vic.gov.au/ 3. If you are responsible for defibrillator placement at your workplace or community group, make sure its accessible by the public at all hours

01.01.2022 Yesterday was not the holiday we all expected - but it was still a time to say 'thank you'. Thank you to every St John staff member and volunteer who assist in our lifesaving work and thank you to every single Victorian who is doing their part to stop the spread of this virus.

01.01.2022 R U OK? A simple question, that can make the world of difference to someone who's struggling. 2020 has been a very challenging year for many and circumstances have left people feeling overwhelmed, anxious or in some cases depressed. If you feel like something is not quite the same with someone you know - trust that gut instinct. Here are some ways to ask R U OK in 2020: Try asking the question in different ways, such as ‘You don’t seem yourself lately want to talk about i...t?’ Or ‘With everything that’s going on, you’ve been on my mind lately, how are you?’ Really listen to what they’re saying and resist the urge to jump in if there is a quiet pause. You can encourage them with phrases like ‘Take your time, I’m here for you. Or ‘I’m not going to pretend I know what it’s like for you, but I’m here to listen to why you feel the way you do.’ Encourage them to take some action and follow up with next steps, you could say ‘Do you think it would help for you to talk to someone else about some of these things, maybe a health professional?’ or ‘Is there anything you’ve tried in the past when you’ve felt like this, that’s made you feel better?’ Remember to check in with them soon after your conversation, this will build trust and may encourage them to open up further.
