21.01.2022 Meet Michael Fawkes. Congratulations to Michael on winning the prestigious Dante Alighieri Award for his outstanding academic excellence in Italian Studies. Michael’s various life experiences since graduating from St Joseph’s includes; living and working in London for 2 years as a Teacher’s Aide, personal trainer, site foreman and numerous trips to Italy. In 2018 Michael commenced a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education and hopes to complete a Masters of Italian. Upon ...reflecting on his time at St Joseph’s, Michael says I think my decision to study these two methods stems partly from my two favourite teachers at Joey'; Louise Madden and Kerry Drever. In 2018 Michael spent a couple of months studying at the Monash Prato Centre in Italy. His love of the country stems from their beautiful language and culture (which centres around family, food and wine) and rich history of literature. Michael is currently working as a Learning Support Officer at Sacred Heart and hopes to have the opportunity to return to Italy to teach in the future. #onceajoeysboyalwaysajoeysboy #stayconnected #inspiringalummni #sjoca

20.01.2022 As our Year 12 VCE students continue their exams this week, many of our Old Collegians have shared their own messages of support, including Sam Walsh (SJOC 2018). The Class of 2020 have faced challenges far beyond what is expected in their final year, our Old Collegians are in the best position to recognise the dedication needed by these young men after walking their own path here at SJC. We hope you all enjoy hearing from past students as all of our young men face their final academic challenges for this year. #SJCClassof2020 #SJCgeelong #youvegotthis #SJOCmessagesofsupport #SJOCA #Stayingconnected #Samwalsh @sammy_walshy

19.01.2022 St Joseph's newest applied learning initiative, 'St Mow-esph's' was launched today! The program involves VCAL students grabbing their hi-vis, PPE, gardening tools and heading out into the St Joseph’s community to assist the St Joseph's Old Collegians in need of a hand in the garden. Julie Cole, Fundraising & Alumni Coordinator, made contact with Barry Hill (SJOC 1950), who was the first Old Collegian to receive a nature strip blitz, Barry was very grateful and appreciative... of the service. The program allows current students to pay respect and say thank you to those who have laid the foundation of the current St Joseph's tradition and culture of helping the most vulnerable. VCAL will be running this service throughout 2021 If you know of any past students like Barry in the Geelong region who would appreciate a backyard blitz please contact [email protected] to arrange a time and date. #SJCgeelong #StMowsephs #SJOCA #VCAL #SJCbackyardblitz See more

19.01.2022 Old Collegian Caleb Neyenhuis (SJOC 2020) is pretty inspiring and when he graduated last Friday night it was the end of a 6 year journey at Joey's. We're proud to have had such a fine young man show everyone that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Well done Caleb! 18.01.2022 Meet Jake Hogan (SJOC 2011) Tell us about your career since graduating from Joey’s? I'm a photographer, mainly in weddings and elopements, shooting all over Victoria. I have two businesses; my own wedding photography business https://www.jakehogan.com.au/, and an elopements business with a friend of mine https://bigloveelopements.com.au/... It’s great to see you recently visited the College to talk to our 2021 Student Leaders about the importance of being true to yourself and care for your own mental health. Can you share with us some take away points from your presentation? - You have so much value to give when you be true to yourself - Every action you take, in leadership and/or in life, reinforces the value behind that action into your character. Kindness reinforces a kind heart. Courage promotes courage. Empathy breeds connection. - Your character is the sum of your actions and words. You have more value to give than just awareness and knowledge - with courage, you can positively impact those around you and go a step further with your skills. - Your skills will grow, develop and change as you get older. Reflection and self-kindness will allow you the positive mindset to grow healthily. - Mental health is something you can work on by yourself, and with professional help which is easily accessible and absolutely beneficial. Thanks Jake and we look forward to seeing you back again soon. @jakehoganphotography #onceajoeysboyalwaysajoeysboy #stayconnected #inspiringalummni #sjoca

18.01.2022 Wishing all our fathers, male guardians,grandfathers & mentors - a HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!!

17.01.2022 This week Mr Cashin’s Wellbeing class had a virtual visit from St Joseph’s Old Collegian and North Melbourne superstar Shaun Higgins (SJOC 2005). During the class, Shaun had a chat with the students about the importance of wellbeing and mentioned how he uses the QualityMinds Global application to enhance his own wellbeing. He then shared this final message of advice for the boys. Thank you to Shaun for the online visit, we have had a few guests (and great support from our past students) come to our online classrooms during remote learning and their connection is always a highlight for our young men. #SJCgeelong #SJCvirtualvisits #SJCwellbeing #sjcremotelearning #shaunhiggins #SJOCA #onceajoeysboyalwaysajoeysboy #stayingconnected

17.01.2022 We are reaching out to our alumni community of St Joseph's College Geelong and asking for your help. This year has been a difficult for everyone, especially our Year 12’s and most of you will remember how challenging Year 12 can be. Imagine undertaking this through a pandemic and having to learn from home for most of the year. Unfortunately, this is the reality for these young men. Not only have they missed out on most of the school year but the fun stuff too like Edmund Rice... Day, Swimming and Athletic carnivals, Fun Food Days, Excursions, Camps, Winter Formal, restricted Celebration Day and Graduation Mass and their 18th birthday parties. On top of this, there is no respite with exams in the coming months. It’s little wonder that the Class of 2020 needs your help! What we would love you to do, is record a brief message of support and hope to the cohort. Perhaps even some tips and suggestions. Your messages of encouragement will be collated and shared with the boys at their Year 12 assembly and on our social media platforms. If you are interested, we would love to hear from you. Video messages can be sent through a secure google drive link once you have made contact with Julie Cole [email protected] #sjoca #stayingconnected #onceajoeysboyalwaysajoeysboy See more

16.01.2022 The Geelong Small Business Festival is currently underway and is an ideal opportunity to connect to innovative companies. Old Collegian Shannan Gove (SJOC 2007) is presenting on Monday 7 September on behalf of his company Rosterfy. Shannan and Rosterfy's story is fascinating (it was featured in this year's Ad Alta Magazine) and the presentation of "How to Take Your... Business Global" on Monday will no doubt inspire many other entrepreneurs and keen professionals to take their own business to the next level. 15.01.2022 @sanitexaustralia arrives at SJC! It was great to receive a delivery from Sanitex last week from David Collard (SJOC 2002). The College has been extremely lucky to have Dave provide a safe way when students return in 2021 by providing new Hand Sanitiser and dispensers, that will be located across all common areas and classrooms at the Edmund Rice and Westcourt Campus when our students return in 2021. No more press bottles, students and staff can hold their hands under the aut...omatic dispenser to sanitise! We appreciate the support of Dave and the Alumni who are part of the Sanitex team, James Fatone (SJOC 2002), Gus Beeforth (SJOC 2002), Luke Thackeray (SJOC 2002) and Michael Graham (SJOC 2002). 10.01.2022 This year, St Joseph’s College celebrates its 85th Anniversary. As it has been a difficult year to gather and celebrate, we have taken the opportunity to engage with four of our alumni who have been involved at the highest level of AFL Football, to select their ‘Team of Champions’. If you have seen today’s Sunday Herald Sun, Jon Anderson has published a fabulous piece celebrating this team of talented Alumni. With an impressive list of 56 Old Collegians who have played VFL /... AFL football, from Jim Fitzgerald at Geelong Football Club in1944 through to Matthew Ling, who made his debut for the Sydney Swans in 2020. A further three alumni have coached at VFL / AFL level, Bill McMaster, Mark Neeld, and Brendan McCartney. The Team of Champions consisting of 22 players, has been selected from this outstanding cohort. College Principal Tony Paatsch said We are proud of the achievements of all our alumni in the arts, culture and sport, including those who have played football at the highest level. It is an important part of the history of the College. With 14 past students currently playing at the highest level, we are sure some of them and some of our current students, will be in the team of 100 years at our centenary in 2035. 10.01.2022 In Monday’s Geelong Advertiser there was a bit of a buzz around past student Vince Ballesteros (SJOC 2014) and his Buzz Me initiative he has started from his Pakington Street Salon, Streets Barbershop. Recognising the importance of checking in on people to make sure they are ok, especially during COVID 19, Vince is making a donation to RUOK for every mullet or buzz cut that appears in his barber chair. What a great way to highlight how each of us can make a difference just by starting a conversation (or by booking in a hair cut with Vince!) Congratulations Vince and we wish you all the best with your Buzz Me initiative. 09.01.2022 The journey of musician / vocalist Tim McCallum has been anything but ordinary. His early aspirations for a career in musical theatre were thrown off track with a diving accident that left him unable to walk. That hasn’t slowed him down though, just altered his path one that we at St Joseph’s are privileged to have been a part of. Tim was a Vocal Teacher & Choir Master at St Joseph’s for just over four years until mid-2009. In that time many young men would have benefitted... from his tuition and experience. The music program is one we are very proud of at St Joseph’s and our staff provide an excellent springboard for future aspiring musicians. In 2015 Tim wowed us all as a contestant on ‘The Voice’ and this year he will realise a dream of singing the National Anthem at the AFL Grand Final after being confirmed last week. Many would have seen the great article in the Geelong Advertiser about Tim’s bid to get the chance to sing at one of our biggest sporting events, you can read the full story at https://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au//3702df506924a57b7d61. #SJCgeelong #SJCmusic #TimMcCallum #AFL #Geelongadvertiser Tim McCallum

08.01.2022 At lunchtime today, St Joseph's College Geelong will host a virtual visit from Old Collegian David Morgan (SJOC 1997). David isn’t just popping up online to say hello, he is hosting a College wide lunchtime PT session for Training Tuesday as part of our Movement and Wellbeing Program. David studied a Bachelor of Education and he is currently the co-owner of Geelong Athlete Centre. From a young age David’s life was filled with playing and watching sport, which developed int...o a strong passion for all things sport related. Having played sports competitively in both cricket and football for many years, David understands the demands required to be a top level athlete and he uses this knowledge and experience to help the athletes he coaches. Since 2016 David has been involved with the Geelong Cats inaugural women’s football program as an Assistant Coach with the VFLW team and is currently a Development Coach with the Cats AFLW team. #onceajoeysboyalwaysajoeysboy #stayconnected #inspiringalummni #sjoca David Morgan Geelong Athlete Centre

07.01.2022 Last week was Stroke Awareness Week, with news outlets sharing stories of many who have been affected. One person featured in the Geelong Advertiser on 1 September was Old Collegian Tony Harris (SJOC 1974). Tony woke up at his Lorne home one morning in early May with tingling down his right side and slightly slurred speech. I said to my partner, ‘I think I might be having a stroke’, Months later, Mr Harris is still undergoing multiple forms of therapy as he works towards r...eturning to outdoor activities, such as running. One way to reduce the impact of stroke is to think FAST - which stands for Face, Arms, Speech and Time. The acronym helps identify strokes and, in the instance of a suspected stroke will assist in getting critical assistance as soon as possible. F- Face Check their face. Has their mouth drooped? A- Arms Can they lift both arms? S- Speech Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? T- Time Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away. Awareness is important, particularly people understanding that simple acronym, Mr Harris said. We wish Tony all the best as he continues his recovery. 06.01.2022 Like many businesses this year, Matt O’Kane owner of the Coopers Inn at 282 Exhibition St, Melbourne, has needed to think outside the box. As part of his creative approach, Matt has partnered with good friend Brad Wilson at Little Lon Distilling Co. to produce a boutique gin, The Publican. Over the past few months, the Coopers Inn has also generously offered the use of its kitchen to Al Dente, a business supporting migrant hospitality workers, led by Italian chef Andrea Vigna...li. Andrea is ineligible for job keeper payments and is unable to return home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Matt’s kindness has also extended to financially supporting Isabelle Woods, one of his longest-serving employees. Isabelle hails from England and she is also unable to access government support due to her visa type. Matt says: AL DENTE and THE PUBLICAN have been shining lights for me, in an otherwise gloomy year for the pub. We wish Matt all the best over the coming months and we look forward to returning to the Coopers Inn to experience their celebrated old school hospitality in Melbourne’s CBD. 02.01.2022 As father's day is fast approaching, many of our past and current students will be looking forward to catching up with their dads. Upon opening the paper today, we saw that there is one past student who was able to catch up with his dad in a different way - while at work. Xavier McKeegan (SJOC 2015) has followed in the footsteps of his parents by joining the Police Force and was posted with his father Damian (SJOC 1984) at the Little River checkpoint, allowing father and so...n to work side by side. Policing has been something of a family tradition for the McKeegans going back to Damian's Great-Great-Grandfather who was policing in the 1800s. It is wonderful to see Damian developing his own passion for working on the thin blue line and we are sure his dad will be passing on some great advice.
