18.01.2022 December and January is the Noongar season of Birak, the first summer. During this season, the days are hot and dry with strong easterly winds. Young birds are venturing out of their nests and reptiles are shedding their skins. Traditionally, Birak was a time when Noongar families harvested banksia flowers for their nectar and burnt sections of scrubland to reduce undergrowth, encourage new growth in Djilba and force yonga (kangaroo) and karda (goanna) out into the open to be hunted for food. We are highlighting the seasons on the Noongar calendar as one of the ways we recognise and celebrate events of cultural significance to Noongar people.
