18.01.2022 The mother and brothers of Jesus The Gospel today from Luke (8: 19-21) has the title ‘The true family of Jesus’ and in it we see that Mary and the brothers are ...outside. The crowd in this Gospel form a barrier between Jesus and his mother and brothers. Mary and the brothers are pointed out as those who listen to the word of God and put it into practice. This Gospel comes straight after the parable of the lamp where reference is made to listening. For our reflection today, given what Jesus declares in the Gospel today, Fr Paul says we might ask ourselves ‘How often and how well do I listen to the word of God? How often and how well do I put it into practice?’

07.01.2022 For our prayer today, Fr Paul says, we might reflect on our own lives, on our own sinfulness, and as we do this we might be mindful of the words Jesus says to the woman towards the end of the Gospel then he said to her ‘your sins are forgiven, your faith has saved you, go in peace.’

07.01.2022 The importance of women in Jesus’s ministry Fr Paul reads from the Gospel of Luke (8: 1-3), which names some of the women who were with Jesus and his disciples ...as they travelled in their ministry. Fr Paul says, in Gospel times, how women are perceived or even taken into consideration is a role that falls to the writer of Luke and the writings of Paul. He says when you look at the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and John there is little room for women in their world. Fr Paul continues saying, what is beautiful about Luke is that the thoughts and feelings of women are brought into prominence. Through Luke, we need to remember that women were not just a support group when Jesus travelled. In Luke, for example, Mary of Magdala, who he writes of in today’s Gospel, is the first to witness the Resurrection. In Paul, Paul chose Phoebe to carry his letter to the Romans to Corinth. For each of these people, women very much shared in the apostolate. Today for our reflection, Fr Paul invites us to pray that the thoughts and feelings of the women in our lives, in our church and in our world are always considered and made prominent. We also pray that women always hold positions of prominence in our church and in our community.

03.01.2022 Farewell Year 12

02.01.2022 Who is Jesus? Today’s Gospel from Luke (9: 7-9) is titled ‘Herod and Jesus’. Luke’s Gospel does not contain the murder of John the Baptist by Herod. We only hea...r it alluded to in today’s Gospel. The Gospel writer of Luke mentions Herod here to raise the question that Herod asks, the same question that will be asked when they finally meet later on, ‘Who is this?’ ‘Who is Jesus?’ This question will be answered in the events that take place from now on. Already there is the thought, alluded to in this Gospel, that Jesus is a prophet. A prophet, Fr Paul says we need to understand, is one who see things as God sees them and who declares the will of God in particular circumstances. Yet, this is just the beginning. For our reflection, Fr Paul says we might reflect on two areas in our life firstly, who is Jesus for me at this time in my life? And, secondly, how anxious am I to meet Jesus at this time?
