25.01.2022 Our September luncheon was held at the fantastic new Crowne Plaza Hotel Core Restaurant and Bar, where we inducted 2 new members, Rebecca Suitor from Crowne Plaza Hobart and Jonathon Gregory from Red Decker Hobart & kunanyi/Mt Wellington Explorer Bus. A special thanks to all the team at Crowne Plaza for putting on a brilliant event, and a wonderful opportunity for fellowship amongst many Skalleagues and guests. Our next event will be held at The Astor Grill, more details to follow soon!

24.01.2022 A good day had by all at the Annual General Meeting; also known as the AG-YUM held at Kwan Ho Restaurant last Friday. It's good to reflect on the successful year we've had in raising funds for our local charities as well as formalising our support for Rosny College Tourism VET students and reaching a milestone of 100 MEMBERS!! Farewelling our much-loved and first female President Sarah Thomas and welcoming the new and second female President Issabel Eaves. The future looks bright indeed !

24.01.2022 Last week Skål International Hobart held our first event since February at Customs House (with appropriate social distancing measures in place!). It was wonderful to finally have an opportunity to connect ‘face to face’ with fellow Skålleagues, and to show our solidarity and support for our fantastic club and amazing industry. It goes without saying that we have been, and still are, in the fight of our lives. This event was a well-earned ‘circuit breaker’; a chance to share stories, to connect, and find ways to work together. A big thank you to long-standing Skålleague Paul Jubb, Karen and Emily for hosting the sell-out event, and 7K Distillery for sponsoring the welcome drinks and hand sanitisers. Fellow Skålleagues, stay STRONG, stay SAFE, stay CONNECTED! Photo credits: Alastair Bett

24.01.2022 Dear fellow Skålleagues, We hope that you are able to join us for our Skål luncheon this Wednesday at Drysdale. This lunch is a particularly important event as we are supporting the tourism and hospitality students of Drysdale, who due to the pandemic this year have had limited opportunity for practical experience towards their certificate training. This lunch will serve as a vital opportunity for the students to prepare, serve and host a function. We are delighted to have ...Tim Goddard from Cool Wines pairing wines with the wonderful 3 course menu on offer. Please see the booking link below, if you have not already booked for this fantastic lunch to support our up and coming future tourism leaders. https://www.trybooking.com/BMQUR Yours in Skål, Issabel

22.01.2022 In 2019 Skal Hobart members contributed over $11,000 to support Foodbank equating to thousands of meals that have long been consumed by our Tasmanian families. Hospitality owners and operators can bring about a silver lining by considering Foodbank for donations of excess stock in this critical time of need. Please, help if you can.

21.01.2022 Hello Friends and Skålleagues, This is our 4th Episode of Skål Stories featuring the well-known and much-loved Proprietor of Customs House Hotel and The Shipwrights Arms, Mr Paul Jubb. **********...Continue reading

18.01.2022 Another wonderful luncheon this week, prepared served and hosted by the students currently undertaking their training in Cert III International Commercial Cookery and Cert III Hospitality. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students and the food and service was absolutely outstanding. Most of the students are now finishing their courses and are actively seeking employment in our industry so please get in touch with Tas TAFE Drysdale should you have employment opportunities within your business for our up and coming tourism stars Photo credits Claire Harrington, Tas TAFE Drysdale.

Inductions for new members Trish Lewis and Rocky Doniz; along with the usual fines session by Mark West.

17.01.2022 BIG THANK YOU to everyone who supported our Christmas lunch at Frogmore Creek. Thanks to the generosity of our members and guests, the raffles and auctions on the day raised over $3,250 which greatly assists us in our donations to our local charities, The Pennicott Foundation, Foodbank & Vinnies - Loui's Van These charitable donations make a real difference to real people. Just as an example our $4000 donation to Foodbank Tasmania will provide 8,000 meals to vulnerable Tasm...anians this year. Toolkits and posters are available from Foodbank if you or one of your colleagues would like to run your own food drive. Simply email [email protected]. And of course we have our Annual Beach Clean-Up Day coming up in April with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys. Keep an eye out for invitations coming soon. 16.01.2022 A huge thank you to Phil Fuglsang and Andrew Fuglsang from Salamanca Inn for hosting an absolutely fantastic luncheon this week at their newly refurbished restaurant Birdsong. And a special thanks to Simon Terhell and Bev Thomson from Vinnies who joined us to talk about about the amazing work they are doing in the community with Loui's Van during these very challenging times. Stay strong, stay safe, stay connected!

14.01.2022 Dear Friends and Skålleagues, Welcome to our second installment in our series of stories sharing what life is like for our members these days. 14.01.2022 Dear fellow Skålleagues, Whilst we continue to navigate our way through these ongoing truly testing times, one thing remains clear to me: that the value of Skål and the camaraderie and fellowship our Club brings has never been more profoundly important. I strongly believe that the opportunity to connect with our fellow Skålleagues and industry colleagues at our monthly luncheons (which we resumed in July) has been a vital instrument for our professional, personal and mental w...ell-being. I continue to receive wonderful feedback from members and guests who have attended our luncheons. The overwhelming sentiment is that these events have indeed served as a much needed ‘circuit-breaker’ a chance to connect, to share stories and to support one another. To have a much-needed laugh, or even a well-earned cry. I believe it is so important to continue these connections, and let’s face it - having a good laugh during one of Westy’s inimitable fines sessions is sometimes just the spoon full of sugar we need! We welcome the news of the Tasmanian borders reopening to some states at the end of this month, and we are optimistic that our industry, having faced its toughest challenges yet, will come back stronger and more resilient than ever. This month our luncheon will be held at The Astor Grill, an old favourite of our Club. Due to restrictions in numbers the luncheon is open exclusively to members at this stage; if we do have seats become available, we will be opening the luncheon to guests as well. As you may be aware the International Congress and AGA in Croatia scheduled for October was duly cancelled this year, and as a result the AGA and elections are to be held via Zoom on Saturday 17th October @ 16.00 CEST which will be Sunday 18th October @ 1am AEDT. Voting delegates are required to join the meeting via Zoom at 1am, and the elections should take place approximately 1 hour into the meeting, with a total meeting time of approximately 3 hours. Alfred Merse and I will be attending the AGA as the voting delegates via Zoom and given the ungodly hour it will be business on the top, and pyjamas on the bottom with lots of coffee on hand! Fiona Nichols our former National President is up for International VP, and our National Treasurer Ernst Krolke is up for International Treasurer so it is important that we show our support and vote! Again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my committee, and particularly those that volunteer their time to make these invaluable networking and ‘connecting’ opportunities possible via our monthly luncheons. You guys truly rock! Stay safe, stay strong and stay connected everyone. Yours in Skål, Issie Issabel Eaves Skal International Hobart President https://mailchi.mp/2d5e44f5/skal-hobart-newsletter-2317906

08.01.2022 Dear fellow Skålleagues It certainly has felt like a long time coming, however with the gradual easing of restrictions in Tasmania it is encouraging and exciting to see our tourism industry now firmly on the road to recovery. With this in mind we are delighted to announce that Skal International Hobart will be hosting our first post-pandemic networking lunch at Customs House Hotel on Wednesday 15th July @ 12.30pm. Skal will have exclusive use of the restaurant, hosted by fe...llow Skalleague Paul Jubb and daughter Emily Jubb. The lunch will be a seated service, with lunch and drinks served to the table. All social distancing requirements for group dining will be in place, and we encourage our members to download the Covid-19 Safe App prior to attending. Due to restrictions with the number of diners per venue, tickets will be strictly first in best dressed. Details including menu and booking link will be sent in a separate email so please keep an eye on your inboxes! We hope that this lunch serves as an opportunity to come out of ‘ISO’ and connect and share your stories and experiences of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on our lives. But most of all, it is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship of your Skal Club, and enjoy a delicious meal that you don’t have to cook yourself! Keeping in the spirit of a traditional Skal lunch be ready to enjoy all of the usual Skål ‘in-formalities’ - have a laugh, maybe a cry, get fined, but most importantly, connect with your fellow Skålleagues. I’d like to thank our committee, who despite facing their own hardships and challenges during this pandemic were always on hand to volunteer their time, whether it be via Zoom meetings, phone and email chats, and our first official committee meeting held at Shippie’s last week. Whilst there was no roadmap for a crisis such as this, having a committee who was willing and able to assist in navigating these uncertain roads has been of invaluable support to me, as the incoming President, and to the Club. I look forward to seeing many of you next month. Yours in Skal, Issabel Eaves President Skal International Hobart

05.01.2022 Dear Skalleagues, As you would be aware, Skal International Hobart supports Vinnies by way of funding the fuel costs for Loui’s Van, which provides food, support and comfort to those in need. Whilst our industry is facing its toughest challenges yet, so too is the wider community and particularly those less fortunate than ourselves. It has been an unprecedented time of need for Vinnies and for Loui’s Van, and Vinnies is seeking larger size blankets to give out to people when... they go out at night with the food vans. They are looking for single blankets that people can wrap around themselves perhaps some of our members, particularly accommodation providers, have some blankets that you no longer need which would be very welcomed by a homeless person. Any donations would be very warmly welcomed and can be delivered directly to Vinnies Hobart HQ @ 212 Argyle Street Hobart, or please contact me directly so that we can arrange a collection. Yours gratefully in Skal, Issabel President Skal International Hobart

02.01.2022 Fellow Skalleagues, Today is World Skal Day and I thought it was important to reflect on what this means for us as an industry at this time. I certainly never imagined that in my term as president that I would be reaching out to you all under these circumstances. The challenges that our industry faces at this time are unprecedented. Many of us have been forced to grind our operations to a halt, and we are all grappling with this ‘new normal’. ... Our industry has been riding high for the last few years, but we have also weathered many storms, and whilst these are very uncertain times, we WILL come back. We have determination, grit and our uniquely Tasmanian sense of mateship that makes me so very proud to be a part of this industry. Whilst our Club activities have been put on hold, as a committee we’ve had many discussions around the best steps forward and we have found ourselves returning to the key pillar of our organisation which is doing business amongst friends. We have a diverse and dynamic network and we encourage you to use this network now more than ever. If you need help, or perhaps you think you can help, we implore you to reach out to each other. The strong ties of Skal and the bonds of friendship are more important than ever at this time, so please, reach out and say G’day. Over the coming weeks we will be sharing stories from fellow Skalleagues, on what they have been up to during these crazy times. The first instalment in the series will include stories from our Vice President Dave Flower and Secretary Nicole Fisher, and we hope that this series inspires some joy, hope and laughter. We are also looking at ‘Virtual Networking’ opportunities via Zoom and other platforms. So today I would like to toast our Skalleagues, our amazing industry, and those who are doing it tough. We WILL get through this. I would also like to raise a glass for all our frontline workers who are keeping Tasmania going, so that we all can share the road to recovery together. We are all in this together and together we will come back strong. Wishing you happiness, good health, friendship and long life. Yours in Skal, Issabel Eaves President
