16.01.2022 OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. My Mum is my SUPERHERO . A SURVIVOR. Watching my Mum suffer through breast cancer was one of the hardest things I have had to go through in my life. Not knowing whether she will loose her battle or survive. One of the other tough battles was seeing my Aunty (My Mums sister) loose her life to breast cancer when I was 21 she was my best friend and my confidante. ... I couldn’t talk to her anymore when I needed her most I couldn’t ask her for advice or go for our coffees in Fremantle. The day my Mum told me to sit down she had to talk to me, I knew, my gut knew what the devastating news would be, she was sick, they had found a small but aggressive lump. I wanted to cry shout and scream. My Mum sick in her 60s and my Aunty having passed away in her 40s, in my head I knew I was next in line and I wasn’t taking the risk. I made the decision to have a Preventive Double Mastectomy that is now coming up to 5 years post surgery. The decision wasn’t made overnight I had counselling and It took a two years for me to make the decision as my boys were still little but for me I knew I was doing the right thing for myself and my family. If you have someone who is thinking about this surgery for preventative measures and they need some advice or want to know more about the surgery and recovery please send them my details. Please make sure you get yourself checked by your GP but also check yourself every month. This cancer is not age discriminatory nor is it females only Men must check as well.
