23.01.2022 Reworked : Saartjie (Sarah) Baartman was one of the first black women known to be subjugated to human sexual trafficking. She was derisively named the Hottentot Venus by Europeans as her body would be publicly examined and exposed inhumanly throughout the duration of her young life. One of the saddest things about Sarah Baartmans existence, besides her enslavement and objectification, is the absence of her voice in her own narrative.... Everything we know about her has been recounted by the scientists, captors, and audience members who benefited from her circumstances. Her duty was to be seen and not heard. Sadly, thats still the expectation for black women today #sarahbaartman #blackvenus #blackisbeautiful #blackisking

22.01.2022 Imposter Syndrome Diaries: I still call myself a hobbeist and love experimental art. I was taking the bins out yesterday and someone was clearly moving out and put old furniture and 6 stools out as hard rubbish. I thought, let me rework and flip those stools. I live in a supportive neighbourhood and Ive been killing it with furniture art, mostly coffee tables I upcycle from IKEA. For some reason, being a black artist makes my work even more "authentic". I guess that works well for me. So now I have these 6 new stools I literally got free, and used PVA glue as a pouring medium with some old acrylic paints that are drying up and Im posting these on the neighbourhood group (it sells immediately). Why do I feel like an imposter so much though #pourpainting

03.01.2022 Story time: I dont usually caption my work but today I didnt feel like painting something complex so I did these while thinking about why I am painting so much. Some of you may know, my husband is a Music Therapist and its opened up my eyes to Arts Therapy in general. Earlier this year when I had an ectopic pregnancy I was put on the Mental Health Program in case I needed to talk about it. I struggled to attend any sessions because I was overthinking the "speaking about it..." part. I took to art therapy where I can just learn to express just about anything in my own way. I dont want my art to be complicated (I did A-Level Art and a semester of Fine Art at Uni but the work needs a lot of time and patience). I think simple art also expresses a lot especially if you are busy with other things. It has a similar effect on those admiring it. As a hobbeist I have also accumulated a lot of paintings in our home this year and I dont like just giving them to people I know as they may not even like it. The pricings on my work literally cover materials and local plus international shipping and it makes me so happy when they go to a good home.
