24.01.2022 With international travel still up in the air, Slow Food International has been forced to rethink the features and format of their global event. While the physical gathering in Torino will not take place this year, the 2020 'virtual' edition of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto will begin on 8 October 2020. Over the next six months, a new program will be developed including digital and physical events that will unite the Slow Food network and its activists, as well as many other o...rganisations, institutions and businesses from around the world. This exciting calendar of global initiatives will become the new platform for dialog when responding to the challenges for the future of our food and our planet. At the end of this six month period, the conference will celebrate and conclude with the 'virtual' Slow Food International Congress. Slow Food needs your help with contributions to make this event a game changer, similar to the very first Terra Madre in 2004. 10.01.2022 Biodiversity is the diversity of life: of microorganisms, plant and animal species, ecosystems and knowledge. It's our insurance for the future, because it allows plants and animals to adapt to climate change, unexpected events and attacks from disease and parasites. Biodiversity can be domesticated as well as wild. Alongside the flora and fauna living in nature, the knowledge of farmers has produced thousands of plant varieties and animal breeds, whose shape, colour, fragr...ance and flavour reflect their local history. Thanks to selective breeding, local varieties and breeds have adapted to their surrounding area, naturally becoming stronger and more resistant, requiring less water and needing fewer pesticides, fertilisers and veterinary treatments. Start with your local area, get to know it - discover your local vegetables, fruits and animal breeds as well as traditional breads, cheeses and cured meats! Slow Food Noosa have contributed funds to support a number of Noosa schools who will work to successfully propagate micro greens to sell back to their community. 06.01.2022 CHALLENGE: Meat consumption is reaching increasingly unsustainable levels and the environmental costs of such an unbalanced diet are enormous. Producing a kilo of beef using industrial farming systems releases on average 36.4 kilos of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (the livestock industry produces 18% of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, a higher percentage than the transport sector) and requires around 15,500 litres of water and 7 kilos of plant-base...d feed. Continuing to eat meat at the rate to which the West has become accustomed (and which developing countries are now approaching) is unsustainable. This is also because excessive consumption is closely linked to the suffering of animals in intensive farms. SOLUTION: Eat less meat, of better quality from farms that care about the welfare of their animals and the quality of their diet. Choose local breeds and buy lesser-known cuts of meat to help prevent waste. Click here to find out more https://linktr.ee/slowfoodnoosa
