16.01.2022 That'll do pig. That'll do. I think the most magical part of winemaking is this. Discovering wine that was almost an afterthought, and turned out well (not ever a guarantee!) Boxes of @tellurian_fruit plums kept coming in the dog days of summer, almost relentless, the best fruit in a hard season. And so we made wine, and at some point I bottled it, and here it is.... Pink. Crisp. Glorious. A good drink to celebrate one case in Melbourne today. May it continue. 16.01.2022 In lockdown we may be, but life insists. The sun is out. We've dragged the sourdough starter back into the kitchen. Plans are afoot. What are you hoping to make this weekend?

16.01.2022 Here comes the It's been quiet around here for a few weeks. To tell the truth, life in locked-down Melbourne has been difficult, and often sad. We're safe enough, most of us, tucked away in our houses, but the energy of the first lockdowns has waned into an anxious lethargy, a time outside of time. Forgive me then for the quietness online. Life in the real has been enough to think about. Friends message... 'I'm sure you're making so much in lockdown!', but it's hard to fee...l excited and make more, when last year's bottles go unshared. This weekend the sun came out. So did the jasmine, in great rafts all over the back fence. I sat in a sunbeam and told my four year old the story (again) of why this jasmine flower is part of her name. For its strength, its determination, and the overwhelming joy that it brings every Spring. We have a little joy back. I hope you have some too, or will soon.

13.01.2022 First up a little project to finish for a lovely farmer and wholesaler / fruit nerd , who between them grew and transported ten (!) kilos of stunning lychees down to Melbourne for winemaking last season. I've been patiently (cough, lazily) waiting for this rich dessert wine to clear up. Nine months at the back of my pantry and no cigar, so this weekend I'll rack then to new jugs along with a touch of clearing agent and stabiliser to drop that haze out and make sure the sweet ...wine won't keep fermenting when it's bottled. And then with any luck some lychee booze can be on its merry way back to Queensland! (The rest can go in my tummy, it's my favourite served chilled with the Christmas berry pav). #countrywine #fruitwine #fermentedfoods #fermentation #lychees #queenslandfood #melbournefood #wine #diy #makeyourown #summer

07.01.2022 It's been three weeks since I made anything. New job. I *adore* it. I can't even tell you guys how much. But I'd forgotten how HUGE those first days are in any new place, and I've mostly spent the evenings on the couch with The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and a cuppa . I needed to make something, and run my hands through some grain. So here's a celebration on the go. Festbier (kinda), this one. Not exactly to style... It's bittered with Pride of Ringwood hops first grown here in Melbourne! But I've cause to be Fest-ing, even in Melbourne, even now, and I'm so so grateful.
