23.01.2022 Smartmouthdentist turns '4' today! ON 5 December 2013 we treated its first patients. A big "Thank You" to everyone who has supported the practice over the last four years - Team members; Lab Staff; Dental Reps; practice friends; and our wonderful clients! It certainly means a lot... Here are some images from those early days... the fish are 'triple' in size now!

22.01.2022 Smartmouthdentist enjoyed the NotFair Art Foundation 2017 exhibition last weekend. Established by Tony Lloyd, Sam Leach, and Ashley Crawford, it showcases unappreciated, & emerging artistic talent. This year is especially kooky, as it is housed in the old Nuttalex factory, James Street, Windsor, until next Sunday. A great juxtaposition of industrial & mechanical, against art & motion.

22.01.2022 Smartmouthdentist wishes its friends and clients a wonderful Valentines Day... Whether you are cherishing time with a loved one; sniffing the overpriced floral bouquet; walking the fur baby; watching romantic cheesy movies; or avoiding the commercialism, and enjoying ones 'own' company! "Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments. Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, ... Or bends with the remover to remove. O no! it is an ever-fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wand'ring bark, Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken. Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks Within his bending sickle's compass come; Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, But bears it out even to the edge of doom. If this be error and upon me prov'd, I never writ, nor no man ever loved" Shakespeare (Sonnet 116)

22.01.2022 Smartmouthdentist has many wonderful younger clients... we really enjoy it when they bring in creative art works expressing their experiences at the practice... A big thank you goes to Ayla, Eden, and Joseph for their wonderful 'dental educational' artistic contribution today! Go Super Tooth!

21.01.2022 Pre-season training for winter sports has commenced. Young, and the not-so-young, are dusting off boots, headgear, uniforms, and shin pads... but the Australian Dental Association wants to remind everyone about the need a good mouthguard. Oral Health Committee Chair Professor David Manton stresses that childrens teeth and jaws change each year, just as much as their feet grow... so its important that they see a dentist to have their mouthguard checked. An ill-fitting mo...uthguard could actually do more harm than good. The ADA recommends wearing a custom-made mouthguard that is properly fitted by a dentist. This ensures maximum protection against dental, and facial injuries. The ADA does not recommend over-the-counter, or boil and bite mouth guards. They offer little or no protection to the teeth, and the mouth. Mouthguards that have saved a player from a hard impact should also be replaced, as they are now damaged. Some people believe that it is too costly to get a professionally made mouthguard, but this is a false economy. The emotional, physical, and financial cost of repairing missing, or broken teeth, can be expensive! Simon should know, as he has fixed countless sporting injuries... Sports Medicine Australia also recommend the use of custom-fitted mouthguards, and have worked with the ADA to develop a No Mouthguard, No Play policy which sporting clubs and schools can adopt. Visit the ADAs website for information on why protecting your mouth with a custom-fitted mouthguard is so important. It also outlines first aid advice for treating tooth injury.

20.01.2022 The Smartmouthdentist Christmas Tree is up. Sophie was so happy! Lots of furry friends to keep clients company over the next month. Light fingers will be frisked...

19.01.2022 Smartmouthdentist promotes the importance of healthy diets, and good oral care in all our clients, especially children... It is worrying when we also know that child tooth decay rates are on the rise in Australia! A great article was published on the ABC News yesterday... check it out! It really tells you about the difficult decisions dentists in the public, and paediatric sectors, have to face...

19.01.2022 One of Smartmouthdentists favourite stalls at South Melbourne Market is the Emerald Deli. Maria has a glorious selection of baked goods (Simon loves the Orange Tea Cake), and deli delights... but what we really love is her wonderful Cheese Room, added last year... Glorious wheels of creamy, delectable, smelly, gooey, or firm seductions... full of calcium. So great for the teeth! Yum! Maria also helps us select cheeses for the annual Smartmouthdentist Art Drinks night.

16.01.2022 Smartmouthdentist wishes everyone a Happy Chinese New Year! 2018 is the Year of the (Earth) Dog... According to Chinese astrology, people in the year of their birth sign will always offend Tai Sui (the God of Age in Chinese mythology). Foolish 'Dogs' may experience bad luck in 2018... this includes the 'Dogs' Madonna, Justin Beiber, and Donald Trump!

16.01.2022 The Australian Dental Association (ADA) has released an animated video outlining how Private Health Insurers (PHI) 'treat' their clients, with regards to 'their own personal choice of health provider'. This is part of the ongoing ADA education campaign about why insurance rebates can vary between contractor dentist's, and private providers...

15.01.2022 Smartmouthdentist always has a selection of Tasmanian Artist's works on its walls... a hangover of when Simon lived down in the 'Apple Isle'... 15.01.2022 Despite Corporate Practices having bigger advertising budgets, and marketing cheaper dentistry, many clients still prefer Private Practices. Many Corporates are also having considerable issues with long-term dentist retention. The Australian Dental Practice Magazine published an interesting article on this topic in October 2017, and highlighted several reasons for this: * Convenience of location * Familiar Faces with less change of staff * Personality and engagement with clie...nts * Consistency with clinician availability * Flexibility of payment terms, services, and hours * Clinical experience * Quality and excellence of treatments provided by private practices At Smartmouthdentist we certainly strive to uphold these concepts of Service, Quality, and the provision of Ethical Dentistry. 14.01.2022 Dentists on screen seem to be slightly quirky or unhinged... There have been three main stereotypical onscreen character portrayals... archetypal gleeful sadist's; predatory sexually-indiscriminate psychotics; or nervous bumbling buffoons. Of course 'real dentists' don't possess any of these qualities...!!! The onscreen parodies of Dentist's provide stock characters that audiences recognise... Some of the best Movie Dentists are Steve Martins 'Orin Scrivello', in the 1986 'Little Shop of Horrors'; Sir Lawrence Olivier's 'Dr Christain Szell', in the 1976 Marathon Man; and more recently Jennifer Aniston as 'Dr Julia Harris' in 2011's 'Horrible Bosses. Enjoy the Popcorn!

14.01.2022 Urban Myth often states that if a tooth is left in vinegar, or Coke overnight it will dissolve. To discover if this is true the UK Rag Daily Mail asked the British Oral Foundation to conducted a simple experiment: Leave exfoliated adult teeth in seven different drinks, for two weeks. These fluids included Prosecco, Cider, a Energy Drink, Cola, a Sports Drink, Milk, & Water. The results were really interesting (check out the link). Thus many common drinks have both a acidic pH, and contain high quantities of sugar. These drinks create the conditions that soften our teeth, especially vulnerable root surfaces. This increases tooth sensitivity, and tooth decay.

12.01.2022 The legend of the Chinese Zodiac is as follows... Back in the ancient days of China, the Jade Emperor ordered that animals would become part of the calendar. The Emperor dictated that the first twelve animals, who arrived to his Palace on a certain day, would be selected. At this time the Cat, and the Rat were wonderful friends. When they heard the momentous news, the Cat said to the Rat: "We should arrive early to sign up, but I usually get up so late." The Rat promised to... wake his friend up, so they could go to the palace together. But Rat became overly excited, and totally forgot about his promise. He headed to the Emperor alone. On his way, the Rat joined up with a group of animals, all on their way to the Emperor. They were all much faster, and bigger than him. Rat hatched a devious plan, and convinced the Ox to carry him on his back. This was on the condition that Rat sang throughout the animals journey. The Ox arrived at the Palace gates first, but the rat sneaked in front of him, and officially became the first 'lucky calendar animal'. The Cat awoke much later, and by the time he arrived at the Palace, the selection was over. This is why the Cat vehemently hates the Rat, and will always try to chase, and kill him.

09.01.2022 Live_Lighter & Rethink Sugary Drink campaign ads, are running on Victorian bus, and tram stops for the next two weeks. This ADA supported campaign, wants Victorians to think about how drinking too many frozen sugary drinks can affect them. A mega $3 Slurpee contains more than 20 teaspoons of sugar! People can consume an entire week's worth of sugar in a single sitting! The healthier alternative for rehydration, in this blistering heat, is water... Sugary foods, and drinks, are a primary cause of tooth decay, weight gain, obesity, and toxic fat. These poor health factors increase our risks for certain cancers; type 2 diabetes; heart and kidney disease; and stroke. For more information check out the link...

08.01.2022 Smartmouthdentist appreciates the effort our Dental Company Reps make, in keeping us informed about new dental innovations, and products. 07.01.2022 Smartmouthdentist staff celebrate some milestones this week.... Twenty-four years ago Simon graduated from the Otago University Dental School (he was only 'five'...). And this coming Wednesday Katie will graduate from RMIT, with her Advanced Diploma in Oral Health - Dental Hygiene!

06.01.2022 At Smartmouthdentist we are often asked why Simon checks peoples palates, cheeks, and tongues during a check up... he will always joke about sheep, and being a 'kwassie'... but there is a more serious side to this. He is checking for any alterations to the oral mucosa. These include 'leukoplakia's', swellings, trauma, and ulcer's. They are often innocuous, but they can be precursors for certain oral cancers. 'Life style' factors can also affect these oral changes... 'Fernandez et al' published a succinct article in the March @Australian Dental Journal, about the associations between smoking, blood sugars, and blood cholesterol, and the risk of oral leukoplakia. If Simon thinks a mucosal change needs further investigation, he will refer clients to a 'Oral Medical' specialist.

05.01.2022 Highlight of going to dental course in Brisbane... Patricia Piccinini @qagoma . #Amazing #artist ! Wish we had some in the Practice...

04.01.2022 A recent study by J.Sun Et El in the Journal of Periodontology provides new evidence suggesting periodontal pathogen burdens, and bacterial diversity in the oral cavity, are important factors contributing to an increased risk of developing precancerous gastric lesions. Their final multivariate logistic regression model conducted, consisted of all key sociodemographic characteristics, oral health behavioural factors, and periodontal assessments. It revealed three factors that were a significant predictor of an increased risk of precancerous lesions of gastric cancer: elevated colonization with periodontal pathogens, specifically T. forsythia, T. denticola, and A. actinomycetemcomitan's; decreased bacterial diversity in dental plaque; and not flossing teeth regularly.

04.01.2022 Smartmouthdentist wishes a Happy New Year to all our Clients, Colleagues and Friends! It is certainly busy in South Melbourne today... the South Melbourne Night Market is gearing up for another fantastic night of fabulous food, and amazing stalls; work is also frenetic on the Albion Hotel redevelopment. Unfortunately these both alter parking availability, and access to Northumberland Street. We will keep you posted... Tempt your tastebuds tonight with a wide variety of morsels, and flavours, from the Market Restaurants; food trucks; and food stalls. It might be warm, but you will come away replete!

04.01.2022 The ADA has called out Private Healthcare Australia (PHA) on misleading statements in relation to insurers contribution toward dental care in Australia. Expenditure on dental health is reported annually by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. According to the 'Health Expenditure in Australia 2015-16 Report', the total spend on dental care was almost $10 billion ($9.862 billion). They broke the expenditure down into the different categories: individuals, Government..., and Private Health Insurers... Individuals continued to fund the majority of dental services (58.0%). Government is the second highest payer for dental services (23.5%) in 2015-16. Private health insurers continued to provide the smallest contribution towards dental services in the 2015-16 period. This highlights how private health insurance lacks value for money, when it comes to dental health. The ADA is also aware how Health Care Providers are often blamed by PHA for insurance premium increases, whilst there is little acknowledgment of the significant profits recorded annually by health funds. 02.01.2022 The NGV Triennial hosts some fabulous interactive art installations. A fantastic way to explore these is the 'Triennial Extra' which finishes this weekend... Performance & music enhance the exhibition. Simon happenstance there last night on his way back from lectures... but he will be back

01.01.2022 Dental Anxiety, and Dental Fear is a real issue! Dental phobias are common, they can arise from previous bad experiences. It has a huge impact on peoples oral health. A 2017 study by Ibrahim et al looked at ways to identify, & analyse, levels of dental phobia. They discussed how dental anxiety has significant health repercussions on individuals. This was primarily through 'avoidance' of dental care. Irregular dental visits can result in more complex dental concerns, especiall...y dental emergencies, down the line. At Smartmouthdentist we are fully aware of how 'providing dental care' can be intimidating to people. We work physically close to our patients, in an extremely emotionally sensitive region. To reduce client anxiety our team is trained to apply some simple human attributes we are welcoming, warm, & empathic to our clients; we use humour in our work; we provide a comfortable practice environ for clients (its more an Art Gallery!); we reduce our Dental-speak; we are transparent with clients about their treatments, and the costs; we provide clear communication; and always lend a comforting hand for the nervous person.
