24.01.2022 : ‘ ’ ? The NSW Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet, has recently declared that the old White Bay power station should be demolished, and has since created a list of buildings he would bulldoze if permitted. Buildings in NSW that have been singled out include the Blues Point Tower and the UTS Building, dubbed the ‘paper bag’ building. Highlighted examples in Melborune include ‘The Pixel Building’ and the controversial Federatio...n Square. The full article can be found here: https://www.news.com.au//n/640da5bc012ac9b1cd6044ab8ebf01a in which buildings throughout Australia are highlighted. It is highlighted in the article that Flinders Street Station was once viewed as an ‘ugly building’, however is now seen as iconic to Melbourne’s architecture and history. #planning #design #smart #smartplanninganddesign #SPD #development #buildings #Sydney #Melbourne #Victoria #city #urbandesign #masterplan #yield #architect #AILA #AIA #art #publicrealm #landscapearchitechture #public #cities #Innovation #Management #DigitalMarketing #Technology #Entrepreneurship #Marketing #Socialmedia #Branding #sustainability #green #informationage #information #society

22.01.2022 -: From this week, Melbourne is taking a big step forward in further easing of COVID restrictions. Galleries, museums and cinemas are now able to reopen in limited capacities. Bars, restaurants and cafes are now able to increase their capacities to 40 people indoors and 70 people outdoors. Further, the 25km limit has been removed, and Melbournians are now free to travel throughout Victoria. Not only will this be a massive boost fo...r Melbournians, it will also be a boost for the economy with more people being able to get out and about and spend money on local businesses. We are looking forward to the further easing of restrictions on November 22nd. #planning #design #smart #smartplanninganddesign #SPD #economy #cinemas #museums #galleries #bars #restaurants #cafes #cities #city #urbandesign #masterplan #yield #architect #AILA #AIA #art #publicrealm #landscapearchitechture #public #cities #Innovation #Management #DigitalMarketing #Technology #Entrepreneurship #Marketing #Socialmedia #Branding #sustainability #green #informationage #information #society

20.01.2022 : The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many changes to our streetscapes. This can be seen in New York City, with streets closing to cars, and opening fully to pedestrians and cyclists. The ‘Open Streets’ program has been lauded as a success, however residents in New York City are hoping that this transformation can become a more permanent solution. See the following article in the New York Times with many success stories: https://www.nyt...imes.com//17/nyregion/nyc-open-streets.html #planning #design #smart #smartplanninganddesign #SPD #activestreets #openstreets #newyork #newyorkcity #DigitalMarketing #Technology #Entrepreneurship #Marketing #Socialmedia #Branding #sustainability #green #informationage #information #society

Retail sales have lifted by approximately 37.5% in the eight days of trading since Victoria’s reopening. 15.01.2022 : Since COVID-19 restrictions have impacted on our way of life, the once thriving CBD (throughout the entirety of Australia) has decreased in use, activity and visits for recreation or retail. As many casual workers have lost their jobs, and office-based CBD workers have been working from home, ‘localism’ has risen, with suburbs emerging as a key area for retail and recreational activity. It is believed that CBD retailers will... continue to see the negative impacts of COVID-19 for some time, and suburban retailers will continue to see an increase in sales and activity, especially in Melbourne with office workers predicted to continue to be working from home for some time. Smart Planning and Design have worked on a number of suburban retail planning permits, if you require any advice on obtaining planning approval for your retail premises don’t hesitate to get in touch with us on 1300 075 167 or [email protected]. #planning #design #smart #smartplanninganddesign #SPD #development #retail #CBD #suburbs #Melbourne #cities #city #urbandesign #masterplan #yield #architect #AILA #AIA #art #publicrealm #landscapearchitechture #public #cities #Innovation #Management #DigitalMarketing #Technology #Entrepreneurship #Marketing #Socialmedia #Branding #sustainability #green #informationage #information #society

10.01.2022 : Designing streetscapes to ensure that they are accessible for people with disabilities and mobility is often overlooked, however this will not be the case for the town of Maldon, in central Victoria. A streetscape revitalisation project is currently underway, with Mount Alexander Shire Council consulting with the residents of the town to ensure that the heritage of the area is not lost with the revitalisation. In add...ition to ensuring that the rich heritage design of the town is not lost, there has also been a push from the Mount Alexander Shire Disability Action Group, to ensure that the streets are easily accessible for residents with disabilities. Australia wide, approximately 20% of people live with a disability, where as in Mount Alexander Shire, this number is approximately 37%, highlighting the importance of providing accessible streetscapes. It is great to see the push for ensuring an easier life for elderly and disabled residents, through appropriate streetscape design. #planning #design #smart #smartplanninganddesign #SPD #streetscape #elderly #disability #accessibility #design #heritage #signs #cities #city #urbandesign #masterplan #yield #architect #AILA #AIA #art #publicrealm #landscapearchitechture #public #cities #Innovation #Management #DigitalMarketing #Technology #Entrepreneurship #Marketing #Socialmedia #Branding #sustainability #green #informationage #information #society

08.01.2022 : The City of Moreland have recently been entertaining a new Planning Scheme amendment (C190), which would establish a more straight forward planning assessment process for developments of two dwellings on a lot. The amendment seeks to introduce changes to the Neighbourhood Residential Zone and General Residential Zone, to allow planning scheme compliant, two dwelling on a lot applications, to be processed th...rough the VicSmart application stream, with some additional requirements for the development. The VicSmart application stream is significantly faster than the standard planning application stream, with a 10-day permit process. The VicSmart applications are also exempt from advertising and objector appeals of Council’s decision at VCAT. To find out more about the proposed Amendment C190, click the following link: https://www.moreland.vic.gov.au//amendment-C190-betterout/ We believe this would be an excellent way to continue to promote medium density housing development in an area expected to see a large demand for this type of housing. #planning #design #smart #smartplanninganddesign #SPD #Moreland #amendment #planningscheme #VicSmart #streamlined #Technology #Entrepreneurship #Marketing #Socialmedia #Branding #sustainability #green #informationage #information #society

08.01.2022 : A recent application for an apartment development in Hobart will be decided upon tonight at a full Council meeting. The application would allow for the removal of the existing heritage building’s iconic Kodak brand signs. Council officers and a heritage architect recommended against the removal of the signs, so it will be interesting to see the outcome of the final decision. The main concern of reside...nts is the removal of the masonry Kodak House sign, which was added to the building in 1929. We hope that the final decision allows for the apartment development to be introduced to the site, making appropriate use of an unused site, whilst still retaining the heritage features of the building including the important Kodak brand signs. #planning #design #smart #smartplanninganddesign #SPD #development #Kodak #Hobart #apartments #Council #heritage #signs #cities #city #urbandesign #masterplan #yield #architect #AILA #AIA #art #publicrealm #landscapearchitechture #public #cities #Innovation #Management #DigitalMarketing #Technology #Entrepreneurship #Marketing #Socialmedia #Branding #sustainability #green #informationage #information #society

08.01.2022 : Hume City Council have recently adopted the Housing Diversity Strategy (which was initially drafted in August 2019). The Housing Diversity Strategy acknowledges the need for Hume to facilitate a higher density of residential development in key areas of the municipality. There will be many areas within the Council that are being assigned as either a limited change area, gradual change area, mo...derate change area, high change area or activity centre. Appropriate dwelling density and design controls will be applied for each of these areas, to encourage development in appropriate areas, and to limit development in other areas where this would not be feasible. This strategy will be implemented into the Hume Planning Scheme, through introducing zoning controls, and reviewing existing neighbourhood character strategies to ensure that they are consistent with the new Housing Diversity Strategy. For more information on how this could impact on development opportunities in Hume, get in touch with us on 1300 075 167 or [email protected]. #planning #design #smart #smartplanninganddesign #SPD #development #hume #housingdiversity #development #opportunity #activitycentre #cities #city #urbandesign #masterplan #yield #architect #AILA #AIA #art #publicrealm #landscapearchitechture #public #cities #Innovation #Management #DigitalMarketing #Technology #Entrepreneurship #Marketing #Socialmedia #Branding #sustainability #green #informationage #information #society

07.01.2022 : The Australian Bureau of Meteorology recently released their Annual Climate Statement, which indicated that 2020 was Australia’s fourth-warmest year on record, even though it was a La Niña year, which usually sees cooler temperatures.
