25.01.2022 I want to get a little personal today... You may have noticed the tag line in my bio is I’m here to help you look after you It may seem a little vague but to me it means SO much! It basically sums up my mission and purpose for doing what I do ... Soon after becoming a physio I learned how important self management and education is in treating and helping patients achieve their goals. That’s exactly why I started this page and how I came to realise my mission. I hope by following this page I achieve this by providing you with the education and tools you need to better look after yourself See more

24.01.2022 How do I know if I’m turning on my pelvic floor? Goooood question! Knowing if you’re holding or ‘turning on’ your pelvic floor can be difficult.... The best way to know is to have an internal examination by a women’s health physio. They can assess this for you and teach you how to do it properly. Not all of us can see a women’s health physio so if that’s the case for you, try these tips! 1 Stop your flow of urine- take note of what this feels like because that’s your pelvic floor muscles turning on. (TIP: Only use this as a test and do it very occasionally!) 2 Insert a tampon part way and then turn your pelvic floor on. If the tampon moves in or up, you’re doing it right! If it gets pushed down, you’re doing it very wrong Save this post and try these at home! If you still can’t work out if you’re turning it on or feel like you’re doing it wrong, seek out a women’s health physio for an assessment See more

22.01.2022 Are you pregnant? Do you have pubic symphysis pain? If you do, my best advice is to see a doctor or physio for professional help! BUT...... There are some common tips and advice given to most. One of the most common is to avoid aggravating your symptoms- like separating your legs when rolling in bed! We tend do this *a lot* which can be very painful But don’t stress- I have a solution for how to roll in bed pain free Check out the video to see how! See more

21.01.2022 What questions will you get asked at a women’s health appointment? (HINT: It gets *real* personal!) The first part of a women’s health consult usually involves you answering questions so the physio can work out:... What your issues are What your goals are What the best treatment plan will be The questions are categorised into different sections like bladder function, sexual symptoms, bowel dysfunction and more! Check out the carousel for examples of questions you may get asked in a consult See more

20.01.2022 SMC FOR HER Often the information I’m giving a client is the first time they’ve heard it and it can be shocking and sometimes distressing It can cause some women to feel alone in their journey but the truth is so many women are going through very similar experiences... The issue is not many are talking about it!... So that’s where I came up with the idea to start a supportive community where women can help and support each other through pregnancy and postpartum. I have high hopes it’ll be a great way for women to connect and give and receive advice and support If you think this is a group you’d like be a part of, you’re more than welcome to join us xx https://www.facebook.com/groups/smcforher/?ref=share See more

19.01.2022 ONLINE CONSULTING AND PHYSIO? Typically people are used to seeing a physio in a clinic and there’s often some type of ‘hands on work’ done as part of the session. In the physio world ‘hands on’ treatment is slowly fading and self management strategies like exercise and education are becoming more preferred ... So while online consulting has some limitations, it is very achievable to assess patients well and provide effective treatment. I’m excited by this move to online consulting because it’s going to promote use of self management strategies for treatment. This means patients will: Feel empowered to take care of their injury/body/recovery Are not reliant on a physio to ‘fix’ them Learn about their body and how to manage their injury and recovery I think physiotherapy transitioning to online consulting seemed like a negative at first but could actually be an incredible push into promoting better and more effective treatments for patients. Let me know if you think the same, curious to hear your thoughts See more

18.01.2022 Scrolling through the many pics the talented Zoe had taken of me, I came across this (actual) candid photo... ...and it’s by far become my favourite! The photo was taken mid shoot when I was setting up for a shot, on the phone to a client and getting dressed in the street ... Among all the curated photos I post it’s a real example of my life as a business owner and the many things I have to juggle! My favourite part is how happy I look doing it. As crazy and stressful as owning a business is- I absolutely LOVE it See more

18.01.2022 Is Pilates good for the pelvic floor? The short answer... HELL YEAH! ... Most (if not all) Pilates exercises require you to activate your pelvic floor. If you’re not, then I hate to be the one to tell you but you’re likely not doing the exercise well! (So how do you know if you’re activating your pelvic floor? Check out an earlier post I did on this! ) When you start, work one on one with a Pilates instructor to make to make sure you’re doing the exercises well and activating your pelvic floor. So once you can activate your pelvic floor and your instructor is happy with your technique- you are on your way to a functional pelvic floor- That means every time you do Pilates, you’ll be working on your pelvic floor! Awesome, right?! See more

15.01.2022 So you’ve had your 6 week postnatal check up with your GP and you’ve got the all clear. That’s means you’re ready to go back to exercise, right? Well, not exactly! To be ready for exercise (particularly high impact) there are several factors that need to be considered and not all of these are checked by the GP.... What are these factors? Integrity of your connective tissue Pelvic floor strength/coordination Pelvic organ prolapse Functional testing of pelvic floor If you return before you’re ready, you could be at risk of causing a prolapse So if you’re keen to get back to netball or F45 after having a baby, make sure you have an internal examination first!

15.01.2022 Psst... wanna know a secret? Preventing and managing a prolapse can be done by following a treatment plan that includes: 1 PROLAPSE PRECAUTIONS - E.g:... - Avoiding high impact exercise - No straining/pushing at the toilet - Practicing ‘the knack’ - Managing your stool type 2 PELVIC FLOOR STRENGTHENING - Increase strength of your pelvic floor - Training it with pulses and holds - Learning to strengthen and relax the pelvic floor - Practicing coordination of the pelvic floor It’s the combination of these two treatments that will best manage and prevent a prolapse! Remember- this is a VERY broad summary with some specific treatment examples If you have a prolapse or want to learn more about how to prevent one, send me a message and I can help See more

11.01.2022 WHAT IS A DRAM?? If you’ve had a baby, then you’ve had one! DRAM is another term used for ab separation. It stands for Diastasis Rectus Abdominus muscle. It sounds a bit scary but in layman’s terms it quite literally just translates to separation of your six pack muscles! ... Sometimes women think having a DRAM is a possible side effect of pregnancy but they would be wrong! ALL women who carry to full term will have one So if you’ve had a baby check in with your women’s health physio to have your abs checked and start on an ab strengthening program if needed! See more

11.01.2022 Exercising while pregnant comes with some restrictions- so that’s where you may need to get creative Finding comfortable positions that also allow you to get a good workout can be tricky. I often find side lying or four point kneeling are the best positions! Try out this glute combo below (this would be a good workout whether you’re pregnant or not!)... 1 Clam - 4 x 8 2 Donkey Kick - 4 x 8 3 Fire Hydrant - 4 x 8 4 Donkey Kick Pulses - 4 x 8 Not sure what these weird exercise names mean? Check Instagram stories where I show a demo of them! **(Be mindful that these exercises may not be suitable for all pregnant women, particularly those with pubic or SIJ pain. So if you’re not sure, check with your doctor or physio first ) See more

02.01.2022 How To Check Your Ab Separation 1 Lay on your back with your knees up. 2 Place your fingers in the middle of your tummy just above the belly button. Have them lined up in the direction of your six pack muscles (trust me, they're there!), with your middle finger on the midline.... 3 Do a small crunch. With your fingers, feel the gap and measure it using the number of fingers that fill the gap horizontally. Take note of the depth too. And that's it! To watch a video on this, check an earlier post of mine titled 'How to Check Ab Separation' and I demonstrate how to do it. Still not sure? Book in with a physio to get assessed!
