22.01.2022 It’s the first week of Advent! The word ‘Advent’ comes from the Latin word ‘Adventus’ which signifies a coming. Advent is a time for us to prepare to celebrate the historical coming of Christ, when the Word took flesh and was born. We also make a special effort to prepare ourselves for Christ’s coming in every moment of grace in our daily lives and His final coming at the end of time.... We recall John the Baptist calling us to prepare the way of the Lord by not only joyful expectation but also repentance and conversion. As in Lent, Advent is a good time for fasting, Confession and almsgiving. In this first week, set some goals for Advent! You may like to try some of these Advent Life Hacks: 1. Dedicate time to daily prayer and pick up some helpful Advent reading. 2. The Mass readings in Advent are carefully planned to prepare us. Find a good app that will give you the daily Mass readings and spend some time with them each day, or at least, each Sunday’s readings. 3. Set up an advent wreath in your home to symbolise the light of Christ. Spend some time praying about the areas of your life that Christ can bring light to. Gather with your family to light the candles for each week and read an Advent meditation. 4. Find a good Advent calendar with prayers and reflections for each day. 5. Tune into some Advent jams and hold off on the Christmas ones until the Christmas season (if you can help it!!) 6. Pray the Rosary and meditate on how Mary prepared for the birth of her son. 7. Give for the sake of giving. Donate presents to the Vinnies Christmas drive. The gift of your time may also be greatly appreciated by many. Do you have an elderly relative or friend who might need company or help getting ready for Christmas? Could your parents do with some extra help around the house? 8. Be conscious of the fact that consumerism during Advent can cultivate an attitude of greed. Work on an attitude of gratitude and generosity, appreciating all that God has given you and recognising your dependence on Him and others. Please share some of your own Advent tips in the comments!! Can you recommend a family tradition or a good book?

21.01.2022 Today some wonderful junior students met to start the day with breakfast and prayer We prayed the 3-2-1 Examen: 1. Turn to the Father and thank Him for at least 3 things from your day;... 2. Turn to the Son, and ask forgiveness for at least 2 failings; 3. Turn to the Spirit, and make 1 concrete, measurable resolution for the next day. Reflecting on our day to detect God’s presence and discern his direction for us is a great way to grow into the best version of ourselves. If we do this regularly, and ideally keep a journal, it makes things like spiritual direction and Confession so much easier, because we will already know where we’re struggling and where we’re thriving. 08.01.2022 Some of our Monicans, staff, alumni and youth from the Archdiocese of Melbourne attended six30 Holy Hour at St Patrick’s Cathedral today. It felt so wonderful to gather for an event that we may have taken for granted in a typical year. It was great to be together and with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament

04.01.2022 It’s been 1 year since the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Perth! Today we give thanks to God for this amazing pilgrimage experience. May we remember the lessons learned and inspiration gained, allowing them to continue to shape us evermore closely into the image and likeness of God. This year especially, we have had many opportunities to respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in ordinary and challenging times. As we recall the mountain top moment of ACYF, may we renew our commitment to draw near to our Lord and cooperate with God’s grace in our daily lives.

04.01.2022 Today is Shrove (Pancake) Tuesday! Shrove is the past tense of Shrive which means to hear confessions, assign penance and absolve sins. Historically, it has been a day where Confession is encouraged in preparation for the start of Lent, which is tomorrow! Over time, it also became a day where Catholics used up their eggs, sugar and dairy before the Lenten fast. Tag us in your pancake creation post or PM us a photo of the pancakes you have made today! #shrovetuesday #pancaketuesday #strive #shrovetide #lent #pancakes #confession
