24.01.2022 Holiday time SMHT is closed this week for a break, returning next Tuesday the 14th of October. In the meantime, you can leave a voicemail on 0419 831 283, or email [email protected] and I will get back to you next week.

24.01.2022 Wrist & hand injuries: nothing beats a custom made splint when you’re sore and need support. This custom thermoplastic wrist splint immobilises the injured wrist, while the thumb and fingers don’t get stiff or irritated by pressure/rubbing from a pre-made brace that doesn’t fit perfectly. This tradesman had given up wearing his wrist brace because it hurt the thumb, but is now using his thumb and fingers normally while still protecting the wrist. Custom splints are just some... of the ways hand therapy provides expert care for injuries of the hand, wrist and arm in Jindabyne & Cooma. Enquiries via 0419 831 283 [email protected] www.smhandtherapy.com.au

13.01.2022 It’s been a hectic few days at the annual Australian Hand Therapy Association conference, this year in Brisbane. Over 400 occupational therapists and physios have gathered to learn from leaders in the field of upper limb therapy and surgery. There is something new and exciting to see every year. These custom leather splints for hard working hands offer durable, comfortable support, and these functional finger prostheses are getting great reviews for enabling grip after an amputation.

10.01.2022 Some light reading has arrived! The postman brought these 1,834 pages of hand & upper limb wisdom today and I couldn’t wait to unpack them. Learning never stops.

09.01.2022 Where there's snow, there's skier's thumb ... A common skiing injury, skier's thumb refers to an injury to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the thumb, either tearing the ligament or fracturing the bone it anchors to. Traditionally caused by falling while gripping the pole, it's also seen with other sports like rugby, basketball and mountain biking. Left untreated, it can take far longer to heal, and can lead to chronic pain, weakness and early arthritis. Thumb injurie...s are frustrating, because the thumb contributes around 40% of your hand's function. These pictures show the site of injury, and an example of a low-profile, custom made rigid splint, which protects this fractured thumb without a bulky cast/brace while he gets on with work. His ski gloves still fit over it and he's back on the snow! These splints take around 20 minutes to fabricate and can be remoulded several times as swelling goes down, to keep them fitting perfectly. 06.01.2022 The injuries off the snow are rolling in, and it was a delight to help a talented artist from WA get her snow holiday back on track after a fracture and dislocation. She was not going to let an injury ruin a great trip! It was an exciting day as Louise has been a fan of ’s artwork for some time. This is a custom made splint (also called an orthosis) protecting her fracture. A little teamwork with the Australian Hand Therapy Association’s members in Western Australia will ensure she gets the right rehab to get back to 100%. {Shared with consent}

06.01.2022 There’s nothing fun about wearing a cast for a broken wrist, but if you must, it should fit you perfectly These waterproof casts weigh next to nothing and you can get your sleeve over them easily. A good cast doesn’t rub, feel too tight or dig in painfully. Full movement of the fingers and thumb within the cast means you’ll get back to 100% in the quickest possible time. If you’re not comfortable in your cast, get in touch! [x-ray accessed at radiopaedia.org]

02.01.2022 9 a side footy, Oz Tag and touch footy are highlights of the warmer months. They can be hard on the body though! This custom wetsuit thumb brace was sewn for a painful thumb recovering from a dislocation. It is supportive but allows movement and fits just right because it was tailor made, on the spot.
