19.01.2022 This is a great reminder about where to place our time and energy. Remember, you are the boss of how you think, feel and act! You are in charge of the way that you react.

18.01.2022 Lets talk about the word autistic for a moment. This post is not intended to be combative. It is simply meant to share information I wish I had known a deca...de ago when starting my career as an educator. I was taught in college and teacher trainings to always use person-first language (kid with autism). This was considered a universal truth from non-autistic professionals. However, over the last five years, I have had conversations with hundreds of self-advocates and learned that this is not true. In fact, many self-advocates prefer identity first language (autistic kid). To be honest, I have avoided commenting on this topic for some time. I like the focus of SBSK to be on the individual being featured and not a debate about semantics. It seems now the topic is no longer one that can be ignored. Every time I publish a video that includes the word autistic in the caption or title, I am greeted by countless messages proclaiming this phrasing is wrong from non-autistic people. Last night I shared an interview of a kid who proudly described himself as autistic. As anticipated, I received many messages about how it was wrong to refer to him in this way. One person said the title of the video made them cringe. In the mentioned video, this child shared that he felt alone and different his whole life. After learning he was autistic, he began to better understand himself. His new identity as an autistic person helped to replace feelings of uncertainty and anxiety with pride and self-awareness. Instead of cringing at the word autistic, I ask that you examine why this word would elicit feelings of discomfort in you. With that said, I do have a process when deciding the captions and titles of SBSK videos. I understand our videos reach millions of people each day, so I take no decision lightly. First, I ask the featured person if they have a preference. Most people these days prefer identity first. Some though, person first. If a person has a preference, I use that. If a person does not have a preference, I use identity first language. Hundreds of my disabled and autistic friends have told me this is their preferred terminology and I honor their expertise. Personally, I see the word autistic as a way to communicate information that will allow me to better connect with a person. In fact, I often get excited when I hear this word and instinctively reply "Cool!" when someone shares they are autistic. Many of my favorite people in the world are autistic! To sum it up, there is no right or wrong when it comes to language. What we must be wary of is speaking over people who have the lived experience of being an autistic person. The redundancy of the messages correcting my use of language often has me feeling like a character in the movie Groundhogs Day. Semantics are constantly evolving. Many of the points I made in this post will probably be outdated in a few years. I will continue to work with each self-advocate I feature to ensure the use of their preferred terminology. I only ask that you do the same. Thank you. -Chris Image Description: Chris and Jon (his former autistic student and SBSK legend) as co-keynote speakers at the 2017 National Autism Conference.

The theme of our workshop relates to supporting our young people to learn about being a better boss of how they think, feel and act! The key focus was around discussing strategies for recognising and managing anxiety, stress and worry. We received such a warm welcome. Definitely worth the 2.5 hour round trip of country driving! Well done to everyone that managed to commit to attending on a school night . Thank you to the Principal, Emma Howell for hosting us and helping to make this happen for your community .

05.01.2022 Words matter. If youre experiencing a strong emotion, take a moment to consider what to call it. But dont stop there: once youve identified it, try to come ...up with two more words that describe how you are feeling. You might be surprised at the breadth of your emotionsor that youve unearthed a deeper emotion buried beneath the more obvious one.

04.01.2022 It is wonderful to have this service based in our region. Well done to Angela and Good Country Physiotherapy on contuining to help improve our community members' quality of life even during tough circumstances.

04.01.2022 We teach about this amazing nerve on a regular basis both in appointments with families or via our workshops and programs. The human body is incredible! Get onto it folks and learn how to activate your vagus nerve. The key is to double your exhale when doing calm breathing! For example, breathe in through your nose for 3 seconds and out through your mouth slowly for 6 seconds. Do this for 1-2 minutes. It can literally pull you out of reaction and sends a tranquiliser effect... through your nerves into all major organs. We will be teaching about this at our upcoming workshop in Mount Gambier (27/09).

04.01.2022 When our children are behaving in not-so-adorable ways, their behaviour might be messy and confusing and wildly maddening, but it will never be about a bad chil...d. It will be about a well-intended, good hearted child who is being driven by something we cant see - a need, feeling, thought, or other internal experience. This doesnt mean no boundaries. It means there are lessons for them to learn, and its okay if it takes time for them to learn them. These lessons will happen in a more enduring, meaningful way if there is safe space for them to be learned, gentle expectations that our children are capable of learning them, and the influence of a loving adult to guide the way. As the important big people in their lives, our challenge is to avoid taking their behaviour personally. This can be so hard - but its so important - but so hard! If we can do this, we can then approach them with curious eyes, an open mind, and an open heart. We can bring ourselves closer to them and that precious space beside them, inside their world. Then, we can learn what we need to learn, so they can too. We can widen the way to us, and expand our capacity to influence them towards choices that work better for them. This might take time, but we have plenty of it - years actually. There are no shortcuts and there is no hurry. And dont worry about what the rest of the world might be thinking when the bumps get bumpy - (which they often do, in public). You have been charged with the privileged role of building a small human into an adult, and you can take all the time you need. A young brain will respond to needs, thoughts and feelings in primitive, instinctive ways until it learns a new way. Our job as parents and the important adults in their lives isnt to make our children behave, but to give them the space, gentle expectations, patience, love and influence to guide them so that they can learn how to do this (behave) for themselves. They have the right to get it wrong as many times as it takes. They will need different things, at different times, in different ways - and there is no express lane. This is why it is a magnificent adventure for all of us.
