25.01.2022 YFCC This year YFCC launched a new event to celebrate the contributions of young people in our North West communities. The Inspiring Youth Awards aims to highlight the positive, everyday actions that so many of our young people undertake, but often don’t get recognition for or even noticed. Seven Year 7 students from Smithton High were nominated for these awards and attended the awards function, along with family members, at the Burnie Arts and Culture Centre on Thursday, the... 8th of October. Nominations included: Toby (Great Mate Award) Toby was nominated because he is a student who regularly works well and gets along with his peers and tries to help in whatever capacity he can. He brings out the best in others both in, and outside, of the classroom. Toby was awarded the winner in this category! Shaelea (‘They Did What?’ Award) - Shaelea was nominated for her participation in the UN Voice Competition in which she was awarded first place in the State, in the Junior Division. Quiet Achiever Award: The following students were nominated for their excellent work ethic and for going over and beyond in their studies. These students were recognised for their ability to meet deadlines, work independently and seek out ways in which to extend their learning. They have shown tenacity and responsibility in their learning, despite the disruptions of this year. Nicholas Tarj Neveah Bridie Aaliyah Congratulations to all these students who have done our school and community proud! Des King Year 7 Teacher

20.01.2022 Lest We Forget Year 10 SEC Co-Presidents, Shay & Taya addressed the school today and were amazing. The closing paragraph from their speech is one we would like to share :... While we commemorate and acknowledge all of those who have served in times of war, we feel it is important to speak from the perspective of our younger generation about our yearning for peace and stability in our world. We have learnt that war creates disharmony and heartache and that often open dialogue and honesty between governments and world leaders has the potential to make many of these conflicts entirely preventable. In the day and age that we currently live in, with terrorism a constant threat and many conflicts escalating rapidly, we feel very strongly that we should focus more than ever on reflecting and remembering the human impact of war and that we should seek peace and cooperation between all nations wherever possible. To us, this is the true meaning of Remembrance Day. It is great to know that young people deeply care about our soldiers and peace within our world

Kim has been relieving in schools around Circular Head for the past 5 years and even though she will have big shoes to fill, she will be a great asset to our team.

03.01.2022 UNIFORM A reminder to all students and families that it’s school policy for all students to wear full uniform every day. Wearing school uniform is important because it:... Gives a sense of belonging Encourages students to take pride in their appearance Helps prepare students for the work force Is affordable Provides focus on learning instead of what everyone is wearing Enables equality by reducing opportunities for comparison School uniform is overseen by the School Association, which has representatives from the student body, parents, staff and community members. There is a range of choice within our uniform to cater for individual needs and tastes. Core teachers are happy to have conversations with parents/carers if there are questions or concerns. If for any reason a student is unable to wear uniform please send them to school with a note and explanation. Students who are out of uniform will be provided uniform to wear. If they choose not to do so they will be supervised by their core teacher in their classroom during breaks. If there are any difficulties getting uniform please feel free to contact the school so we can assist you.
