25.01.2022 Another house gone...sending our thoughts to the family

25.01.2022 How will the new laws affect you? For dwellings being sold, leased or an existing lease renewed From 1 January 2017 Existing smoke alarms manufactured more than 10 years ago must be replaced with photoelectric smoke alarms which comply with Australian Standards (AS) 3786-2014. (Note: the date should be stamped on the back) ... Smoke alarms that do not operate when tested must be replaced immediately. Existing hardwired smoke alarms that need replacement, must be replaced with a hardwired photoelectric smoke alarm. It is also recommended that: o smoke alarms be either hardwired or o powered by a non-removable 10-year battery; and o ionisation smoke alarms be replaced with photoelectric type as soon as possible. For the best protection smoke alarms should be installed on each storey: o in every bedroom o in hallways which connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling o if there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey; and o if there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one smoke alarm should be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling. All smoke alarms should be interconnected. To get everyone out safely during a house fire, it is essential to also have a well-practised fire escape plan. Existing landlord’s and tenant’s obligations continue. Property sellers must continue to lodge a Form 24 stating the requirements of the legislation have been met. See New Smoke Alarm Legislation for more details. From 1 January 2022 All homes or units being sold or leased, or existing leases renewed, will require the installation of hardwired photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms. If a hardwired smoke alarm cannot be installed, non-removable 10-year battery smoke alarms can be installed in place. Smoke alarms in the dwelling must: o be photoelectric (AS3786-2014); and o not also contain an ionisation sensor; and o Be hardwired to the mains power supply with a backup power source (i.e. battery), although dwellings which were existing prior to 1 Jan 2017 can be hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery, or a combination of both. o be interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the dwelling so all activate together. The legislation requires smoke alarms must be installed in the following locations: o on each storey o in each bedroom o in hallways that connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling o if there is no hallway, between the bedroom and other parts of the storey; and o if there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling. If a smoke alarm which is hardwired to the domestic power supply needs replacement, it must be replaced with a hardwired photoelectric smoke alarm.

24.01.2022 When you sleep, your sense of smell also sleeps. If a fire starts, toxic fumes can overcome you. Photoelectric smoke alarms see smoke and will alert you early, so you can escape. With interconnected alarms, you will be alerted no matter where you are, or where the fire starts.... New legislation specifies the type, positioning, and interconnectedness of alarms, which are critical factors for an early warning and quick escape. As people become more familiar with the new smoke alarm legislation and what is required, QFES advises they should continue to maintain their current smoke alarms and also practice their fire escape plans. If you require any further information regarding the maintenance or installation of your smoke alarms please contact us.

17.01.2022 Tough New Smoke Alarm Laws in Queensland New laws mandating the installation of photoelectric smoke alarms in all Queensland homes will make households safer, the State Government says. Laws have been passed to make smoke alarms mandatory in all bedrooms as part of the Government's response to a coroner's report into Australia's worst house fire at Slacks Creek, south of Brisbane, in 2011.... Eleven people, including eight children, died when fire tore through the Logan property. The house was fitted with two smoke alarms but neither had worked for several years. Queensland smoke alarm law rollout: By January 1, 2017: All new dwellings or substantially renovated properties By January 2022: All dwellings sold or leased; all Government-owned housing By January 2027: All domestic dwellings Emergency Services Minister Bill Byrne said the legislation passed overnight also required the smoke alarms to be interconnected, and either hardwired or fitted with a 10-year battery to ensure they gave people the best chance of survival. Mr Byrne said says the laws would be phased in over 10 years. "On the 1st of January 2017, photoelectric alarms will be required to be installed in homes any time a smoke alarm is being replaced or a new one is being installed in any way," he said. "The evidence is overwhelming that interconnected smoke alarms and installing them in bedrooms greatly increases the chances of families escaping from fires unharmed. "The Palaszczuk Government will not sit back while more Queensland families are torn apart by house fires." The Opposition supported mandating the smoke alarms but raised concern that the time frame could put financial pressure on households.
