15.01.2022 Tip Tuesday... how can I support my child to feel more comfortable around transitions? Transitions can be difficult for a range of reasons including: anxiety about what is coming up next, what the expectations will be, not know what is happening later, what demands may be placed upon them and the list goes on. If this is something your child finds difficult, the following strategies may be helpful:... - Warnings about when a transition is coming (beyond telling them what time it will happen), e.g. 5 minutes to go, 2 minutes to go, 1 minute to go. - Count down with your child the last 10 seconds (with warning when this will be coming up rather than surprising them). - Let them know when they can engage with this activity again later, particularly if it is a favourite. - Make sure they know what is happening next. - At the start of an activity set the expectation for how long it will last and when it will finish, so they can anticipate when a transition is coming. 04.01.2022 Tip Tuesday... if your child is struggling with their pencil grip, a good place to start is to encourage the use of shorter and thicker writing implements such as a chunky 'golf' pencil or crayon. This makes the tool easier to hold and opens up the webspace between the finger and thumb, therefore relaxing the hand and reducing the need to constantly monitor their finger placement. Over time this becomes more of an automatic habit and is a very helpful strategy to improve their pencil grip so it can be more functional.

The good news is that the previous story time sessions are all available online with the State Library of Victoria, so you can have story time at the library, anytime! https://www.slv.vic.gov.au/stories/storytime
