24.01.2022 Meet Ellie our newest librarian! Originally from Perth, Ellie previously worked in the Allens law library and is currently in her first of Professional Writing and Editing at RMIT. She loves books, travelling and dogs. After going on holiday in Iceland, Ellie fell in love with Icelandic TV shows, movies and books. In her spare time, she writes historical fiction. Say hi to Ellie when you’re next in the Academic Centre!

Just a reminder that the Academic Centre will be staffed from 9:00am-5:00pm this week and returning to normal hours next week once tutorials start again. There are also a number of great fiction and nonfiction books on our new books display. Hand-picked by the team including me! A memoir in conversations, feminism and minority women, dystopian fiction, climate change, historical fiction, disaster fiction, David Bowie and many more!

20.01.2022 IT’S SWOTVAC!!! Studying isn’t painless but here’s a few ways to help make it easier! 1. Take a tea or coffee break in the student lounge and remember to clean up after yourself! 2. Grab some snakes and study lollies from the enquiries desk. The desk is open from 7pm-11pm from now until Monday 10th June 3. Please share spaces fairly by taking your things with you when you go no one ‘owns’ a chair, desk or floor... 4. Library spaces are for silent study. If you need to talk or make a phone call, please book a tutorial room, use the student lounge or go outside as conversations on Level 2 can be heard on Level 3 and 4. 5. To book a tutorial room during SWOTVAC and the exam period, use the sheets attached to the doors for a maximum of 4 hours/person or group per day. Remember, the Academic Centre is a shared space open to all St Mary’s and Newman students. The Colleges have a right to restrict overnight access if dishes in the kitchen are unwashed or there is food in the library spaces. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR EXAMS!!!

17.01.2022 2020 is looking to be a year of armchair travel, so settle back and browse through a selection of the best travel fiction and non-fiction resources the Academic Centre has on display. Dreaming of the Camino trail? Have a look at the Camino de Santiago display on level 2. Check out pictures of students completing their wonderful journey and choose which trail you would take. Did you know that 2021 is a very special year for the Camino? It is a Holy year of Ano Xacobeo- the Feast of St James the apostle. The Holy year is celebrated when the 25th of July falls on a Sunday- an occurrence that only happens 14 times a century!

What did people wear, their belief systems, how did they treat their various ailments? What were the common rituals surrounding life, marriage and death? The Manuscripts collection on level 3 has a fascinating and diverse assortment of resources on medieval art, life and religious practices.

11.01.2022 SwotVac is here! From Saturday 20 October to Sunday 28 October the Academic Centre Enquiries Desk will be open from 7pm-11pm. Tutorial rooms 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 may be booked during SwotVac and the exam period, for a maximum of 4 hours/person or group/day. Booking sheets will be attached to each of these doors. Just a few reminders 1. The Academic Centre is a shared space open to all students at St Mary’s and Newman.... 2. Library spaces are for silent study! If you need to talk to friends or make/take a phone call please book a tutorial room, use the student lounge or head outside. Conversations from Level 2 can easily be heard on Level’s 3 and 4. 3. Tea and coffee? Please use the student lounge. Please dispose of any snacks consumed in the student lounge and clean up after yourself. The Colleges have the right to restrict overnight access to the Centre for everyone if the kitchens get out of control with unwashed dishes and if food is found throughout the Centre. 4. No one ‘owns’ a chair, desk or a floor. Please take things with you when you go to ensure their security and to share spaces fairly. 5. Lollies are provided at the Enquiries Desk. 11.01.2022 The New Student Precinct Festival will he held on Wednesday 3 October at the UoM's Parkville campus. This free, all-day event will be centred around the themes of Arts and Culture, Design and Development, Sustainability and Indigenous Engagement and will feature bookable sessions and workshops for students, staff and alumni in the morning and afternoon, and an open lunchtime session in 1888 Gardens. The objective of the day is to showcase the Project's progress to date, introduce what's to come and provide further co-creation opportunities for students, staff and alumni to get involved in this exciting development.
