02.01.2022 This might be terrible timing for those feeling depressed at the state of the kleptocratic Australian political system but here is a new article that Ceridwen S...park, Jack Corbett and I wrote about women political leaders in the Pacific. It builds on the work we did in "Being the First" looking at President Hilda Heine, Deputy Prime Minister Fiame Mataafa and Dame Carol Kidu as examples of successful women politicians and then tries to think about how they converted their social and cultural capital into political capital. 50 free downloads are available here: https://www.tandfonline.com/epri/dBuvMwEcICix6Yswn6rQ/full There is plenty more to say on this topic and I dont claim to be an expert but I would like to acknowledge the very thoughtful critique of the ideas in this paper that Roshika Deo and Romitesh Kant gave when I presented it at The University of the South Pacific last year. I dont think weve responded adequately to their thinking, particularly around what this might mean for inter-generational representation. But I do hope we can keep that conversation going and move it in a constructive direction in our future work.

02.01.2022 From the 2019/20 financial year, people with a higher education debt will need to start paying back their loans when they earn a minimum annual salary of $44,99...9 much sooner than in previous years. This change to the Higher Education Support Act 2003 follows a trend that has seen the Government lower the minimum repayment threshold for two years and critics argue that changes would affect the lowest-paid graduates, who barely earn the minimum salary. Ange Snowden reports. See more
