19.01.2022 Could now be the perfect time to purchase your first home? Premier Gladys Berejiklian recently announced that the NSW Government will temporarily wipe Stamp Duty costs on homes worth less than $800,000 with around 6000 Australians to benefit from the scheme. Previously the Stamp Duty benefits would affect those who purchased a home under $650,000 and for homes between $650,000 to $750,000 the stamp duty would be at a reduced rate.... With the new changes the concession sees that $650,000 limit has been increased to $800,000 and Stamp Duty for homes worth between $800,000 and $1 million will now be at a reduced rate. First-home buyers purchasing land will also be able to benefit from the scheme if the land is valued under $400,000, rather than a previous $350,000. For land worth $400,000 to $500,000 the Stamp Duty will be at a reduced rate. If you are buying your first home, now could be the perfect time! Soden Legal are here for all of your conveyancing needs! Phone us on 1300 155 005 today.

18.01.2022 We recently sat down with one of our lawyers Kateryna to talk about how she managed working and parenting from home. 1.How did Covid-19 impact your working arrangements? I have two young children, my eldest attends primary school and my youngest attends day-care. This meant that as soon as the restrictions about school-closures were put in place I had to make arrangements to work from home. I was lucky enough my workplace already had the technology in place to quickly transi...tion to work from home and my amazing bosses were extremely supportive of me (even if my daughter often crashed our morning online meetings!). 2. How did you manage working from home whilst parenting young children at home? Every parent knows that this has not been an easy task and definitely took some time getting used to. I believe that it was also a huge adjustment for both of my kids but after a few weeks we were able to get into our own routine as a family. There was no set hours of work for me, I worked early hours of the morning and also late hours at night on most days. I also tried to plan activities for my kids ahead of time to keep them both entertained and stimulated which allowed me some quiet time each day to get through my work. Having flexible work arrangements in place meant that I was able to also be there for my children during the day. 3. Has Covid-19 changed the way you work? Yes, COVID-19 has definitely changed the way I work. Being in these strange circumstances has made me realise how much we need to stay up to date with technology and how we should consider it to be a part of our everyday lives. Accepting change is difficult for everyone and with this new environment that was introduced I had to quickly adapt to all kinds of scenarios to ensure that I continue to provide best possible legal representation to my clients. 4. How did you keep yourself motivated during the initial lockdown period? Ive always liked the saying you have to crawl before you can walk, I used this saying to stay positive and motivated during lockdown. I planned each day from big to small tasks to even making a coffee. As I began doing the work I found that ticking off the tasks really helped me to stay on track. Whenever I felt that I was lacking motivation I would look at my completed tasks and realised how much work I had completed throughout the day. 5. What is one parenting tip you can offer other working parents who might find themselves in a similar situation at home? Have activities planned for your children, for example painting, puzzles, play-doh or other arts and crafts that your children enjoy. This tip comes with a disclaimer be prepared to clean up the mess once they are done.

14.01.2022 Court Orders and Travel Restrictions Many families that have Court Orders involving children have now been met with Government restrictions and quarantine requirements across State and Territory borders. Many families have been left with uncertainty about how to keep their children safe whilst still abiding with the Court Orders. Here at Soden Legal we have been approached by families who are concerned about their children travelling to and from other States and Territori...es as they are afraid for their childrens potential to be affected by COVID-19 itself, or they are simply worried about not being able to spend time with their children for extended periods of time due to the restrictions. The Courts strongly advise that families seek advice for travel between each State and Territory and how you could be personally affected. Some States and Territories will enable families to continue with their parenting arrangements as essential movement depending on the level of restrictions at one specific time. If this resonates with you and you have any concern about your shared parenting arrangements through this COVID-19 crisis, do not hesitate to contact our friendly team for advice specifically tailored to you on 1300 155 005. 13.01.2022 Animals are often used as an instrument of coercive control to torment domestic violence victims. We’ve heard of pets being injured, tortured and killed to ...keep victims in violent homes. This week I’ll introduce a bill in Parliament to boost apprehended domestic violence protections against animal abuse and make it clear that criminal intimidation includes threats against animals. Today I also launched the Pets and Animal Welfare Support (PAWS) Grants Program, to help refuges and crisis accommodation become pet-friendly and to help animal shelters enhance capacity to provide temporary foster care - to help domestic violence victims escape abuse without worrying their pet will be harmed.

11.01.2022 For many adults, separation and divorce is one of the most stressful life events you ever go through as you juggle parenting and financial issues, as well as your own emotional roller coaster. It is however completely possible to separate amicably in a way that encourages and maintains a positive relationship between you and your ex-partner. Here are 5 tips to help you keep things amicable: 1. Understand that marriage breakdown affects everyone- including your ex partner. Hav...e compassion and acknowledge these tough moments together. 2. Don’t speak badly in front of your children. It can be tempting to criticise your partner in front of your children to get your own back on them, or to vent your own anger or disappointment. But who is this really helping? It might make you feel better in the short term but it’s not in the best interests of your children to encourage them to think poorly of their Mum or Dad. 3. Don’t treat your partner with any less respect for them that you had at the beginning of the relationship. There was a reason that you two got together and whilst you’re sorting things out when it comes to care arrangements for the children and/or dividing your assets, you need to remain partnered and committed to working together to resolve issues. 4. Be prepared to compromise. Refusing to budge and wanting to win at all costs only causes more stress, higher legal costs and anger and resentment. 5. Work with a Collaborative Lawyer. Collaborative lawyers will work together to help parties reach an amicable settlement and avoid Court. When both parties are committed to working together this option will lead you to a positive future pathway much quicker than alternative options. Call us to for a confidential chat if this sounds like something you would like to consider.

07.01.2022 The new Notice of Risk form has now commenced operation and is required to be filed in any new parenting matter in the Family & Federal Circuit Courts. It is critically important that Courts are aware, at the earliest point, of facts and information about safety and issues of risk. The new form will assist in ensuring that families and their children receive appropriate and targeted intervention in the family law system. This is an exciting initiative and one that will ensu...re that Judges, Registrars and Family Consultants in both Courts have comprehensive information in relation to child abuse, family violence and other risks at an early stage in the proceedings, Chief Justice Alstergren said. The redesign of the Notice will also allow data to be captured from six key questions, to give the Courts a more concrete understanding of the risks present in parenting proceedings. This achievement is the culmination of many months of work by the Joint Rules Harmonisation Working Group and Joint Family Violence Committee, Judges, Registrars and staff of the Courts, in consultation with the profession and other stakeholders, the Chief Justice added. http://www.familycourt.gov.au//form-topics/Fam/notice-risk

04.01.2022 A pilot of the Lighthouse Project is being implemented at the Parramatta registry of the Family and Federal Circuit Courts of Australia. The aim of the project is to provide guidance and support to families experiencing or at risk of family violence and other risk issues such as mental health concerns, drugs or alcohol misuse. It involves three interconnected processes screening, triage and a specialist list known as the Evatt List to hear matters deemed to be high risk. This is an exceptional initiative that is much needed in light of the continuing serious domestic violence issues we face in Australia to better support vulnerable families and children involved in the family law system.
