06.01.2022 NEW TAX RATE ALERT: The ATO has now updated and released the updated individual tax rates as announced in the recent federal budget. As a payroll officer, what do you need to do?... In most cases, nothing. The cloud payroll software providers are updating their systems at the moment (Xero released their update today). If you manually make payment (or use an ABA file) simply use the new payment amount. If you have payroll amounts pre-set in your internet banking you will need to update this. Do I need to backpay staff? No, whilst the new tax rates are effective 1 July 2020 you do not backpay staff, instead, they will get a little extra back on their tax when they lodge their 2021 return. Are business owners out of pocket? No, this is simply a reduced tax withholding the gross payroll amount is unchanged. For employees, look-out for a little extra in your take-home pay in the coming weeks thank you to the Federal Government Tax Cuts, employers have until the 16th of November to implement the change.
